How crucial are the current MMOs in development for the future of MMORPGs?

How important is the success and probably financial success are the MMORPGs that are currently in development for the longevity and future on the genre?  We have seen a big dropoff on AAA MMOs being developed and now mainly kickstarters.  If these do not turn out to be a success then do you think most developers move on from the genre?  Or if a couple become huge successes then do you think it will bring back more AAA developments in the future?  What is your thoughts?

Based off the MMO's of the past few years it's hard to say if the genre even has a future....

It's do or die. If these indie projects show market viability it will encourage new development. Otherwise it's Eastern ports for the foreseeable future.

I think the game development culture in different parts of the world is disconnected enough that even if we were to see no more AA+ American-made MMOs, we will continue to see new ones from Asia and possibly Europe and South America.
I want to help design and develop a PvE-focused, solo-friendly, sandpark MMO which combines crafting, monster hunting, and story.  So PM me if you are starting one.

Many this is my concern and why i made this topic.  One of these games need to be hit.  I had a daughter 2.5 years ago and moved away from PC gaming to consoles due to not having time for MMOs.  But thinking of coming back cause no other games no matter how awesome they are designed does it for me like a MMO.  It humbled me and made me realize how incredible this genre is and everything doesnt have to be perfect for me to love the game.  I rooting for all these new games being developed to be hits cause its best for the future of the genre.

Unless one of them at least get on the top 5 list of western games I think we will get a real drought on the western market. If that happens we either have to hope that an eastern game goes really great here or that Blizzard runs out of good ideas and make Wow 2 (they do love sequels after all, and Wow 2 would earn a lot of cash but games like Hearthstone and Overwatch are way cheaper to make and earns more money for each dollar invested in them).

Or maybe we see FPS games actually start getting massive for real, a battlefield MMOFPS would be a MMO even if it wouldn't be a MMORPG and it certainly would rake in loads of cash.

But it would be great if one of the cowdfunding or indiegames became a success.
