Good to see they are doing well enough that they can afford both a blur trailer and a TV spot on the Superbowl. Not really surprising though considering how successful the game has been.
Nevermind ESO. Guess you missed the "World Of Tanks" and "Royal Envoy" (mobile game) ones? I was actually asking myself how can these games afford Super Bowl time???
I think the other one was for Evony. But yeah, I was surprised to see those games running Super Bowl commercials.
Also Mobile Strike. I don't think people understand how much money companies such as BigFishGames, Wargaming, and Machine Zone are pulling in on a monthly basis. Its double digit millions. Even with all their new monetization strategies I doubt Zenimax is making anywhere near that much. So since a 30 second ad is estimated to cost 5 to 5.5 million I'm not sure that was money well spent for Zenimax.
Zenimax owns multiple studios; Bethesda, Arkane, Tango gameworks, Machine games, ID, as well as ZOS. I don't think they're hurting for any cash. They also just won a huge lawsuit that essentially makes that ad's cost look like pocket change.
I would think buying the spot cost them the $
Sure, I don't think it's breaking their bank though. I also don't think throwing that out there in front of a superbowl audience is a waste, at least to them, otherwise why would they do it?
Under some misguided idea that a 30 second "teaser trailer" with no actual product information was going to somehow gain them more customers? Even knowing what the new expansion entails and how long before its released I had to watch the video twice before I could understand that they were showing off the new Warden class. How is that going to look to people with no clue about the game or even players who aren't currently keeping up with the game? How hard would it have been to add a couple of sentences such as "This summer Elder Scrolls Online will return you to Morrowind. Do battle with the dark forces of Molog Bal as the newest hero class The Warden!"? This isn't some simple little mobile game viewers could dick about with on their phones and tablets while sitting in front of the television.
people never buy games because of a promo cgi trailer....
I think people who see that ad will think that is how ESO plays and they will be excited to find out what this game is about. It is to spark interest it does not need to informative, accurate or even representative of actual gameplay it is merely to make people curious and I think it succeeds.

Also keep in mind I'm criticizing the advertisement not the game. I like ESO except for the damned RNG crates.
All ads are really for is awareness, i think in that sense, it's done it's job. It's not like the World Of Tanks ad was any more informative. Most game ads are not, many of them are rather nonsensical (thinking of playstation ads here)... Hell most commercials in general are nonsensical in this day and age.
The point for an ad is to get the name of your product out to as many people as possible. A superbowl crowd is prime ground for that.
I'm not sure what that last bit was about, I wouldn't care if you were talking about the game, I like you enough to let that slide :P..

I think this trailer was pretty damn decent. Not sure I'd choose it for an MMORPG game, it seemed more like a MOBA trailer, however it was still an exceptional trailer.
And people commenting on that Blizzard has better CGI, they used to. Legion's trailer was shit.
Also it's nice to see the haters come out of their holes, just because they are jealous of ESO's success. Keep hating, you won't change the fact that millions think that ESO is a great MMO and ES game.
Don't worry about hiring quality developers that can address the layered cake that is ESO's code post-launch and actually take the game somewhere. As long as there's a pretty CGI trailer that has nothing to do with the game there's no worries!

Hey that's only 300,000 ESO+ months

What is said is that the trailer ws quite uninspired and boring to the most part...
Yeah, the trailer is pretty lacking I think as well.
It's a freaking trailer people...
But for how much money it must have cost to create and air it at that time, I don't think it was done very well. I thought it was cheezy. They should have spent some more money on someone to actually write an interesting narrative.
all my friends and I thought it was good... we were playing the, 'if you see an ESO commercial you've got to drink, drinking game'... and we all got drunk
Marketing 101. You're not selling the steak, you're selling the sizzle. Look at SC, players are posting it's the best game ever and it's still in buggy alpha.

Everyone should be alerted of the bad quality, when most money goes to marketing.
Not necessarily. They are two separate departments after all with separate budgets.
Not to mention two departments that usually don't get along.

Worked a charm for Overwatch.
