Lol, how the haters are crying, they though the Smed was dead Lmfao.
Not haters, just setting up bets how long it takes for the company to die and/or to fire John "NGE" Smedley.
Hey, again, Smed is merely the greatest scapegoat in history, so the "NGE" isn't really his scarlet letter to wear. Why? It's quite well documented by devs and other team members that this was NOT Smed's decision. Even Smed said, at the time, it was a "mutual" decision between SOE and LucasArts, but that's bullshit. He's just a really good scapegoat because years later, despite there being a fuck ton of information to the contrary, people still think he was responsible for that debacle, lol. That being said, it's probably the reason he got this job. He's a good corporate guy who is magnetic (for shitstorms) and he's weight that can be shed if things go sideways and Amazon will come out smelling like roses because they just "made the best decision ever by firing him.", effectively giving them a second life. Do you know how much a company would pay for a second life?
Seriously, though, use the Internets and read articles published at the time versus what's available now from guys like Raph Koster. It's very enlightening.
As I mentioned earlier, there's a very clear pattern of recent failures. H1Z1 pulled a bait and switch that showed no signs of letting up until Smed left and DBG decided they wanted to, I dunno, finish the survival game they took their initial round of funding for, then pretty much ignored in favor of Battle Royale mode because it offered a larger revenue stream at the time.
Then Hero's Song, despite the few here who enjoyed it, never took off. There seemed to be a huge disparity between the potential consumer base of that game and what Smed thought the potential playerbase was.
As I mentioned earlier, I have no personal angst against him. I won't be buying into anything he's involved on unless I see critical acclaim, however. Additionally, to act like there isn't any reasoning for negativity, that Smed never made bad decisions that we should hold him responsible for but was only a scapegoat, is just as erroneous as calling him objective evil.
Even if he received pressure from publishers, he consciously put himself in the spotlight with the playerbase. It was bound to garner him a reputation one way or another, and the sad truth is, specifically lately, Smed hasn't shown me anything positive enough to get excited for a project he's involved in.

Good answer. It's clear why you speak for the community.
I think that he is a known quantity has a resume and has a reputation in the field. I would say that anyone hiring him has done their research, knows what he's done, not done, etc.
Since I work with HR in a global company I can also tell you that it's not just an "HR Rep" doing the hiring. A person of this level doesn't just fill in an application like at Starbucks and hopes for an interview.
People in the business will actually be involved in the hiring.
So in essence, he's already been vetted.
All you are doing is adding another notch to the bedpost of "why gamerz aren't taken seriously and come across poorly to people outside the hobby".

He had hired Georgeson before. I'd hire anyone with that on their resume.

I agree, I may have reservations about his track record and ability to make a good game and run a successful company, but I think it's a step too far to call Amazon to try to get him fired. That's crossing the line.

The hardcore EQ franchise fans are going to skewer me for this, but I don't know why people like Georgeson so much. I suspect he was a major reason why EQN failed. Too many big ideas that weren't realistically possible to complete the game with - either period, or with the team and tech they had, we'll never know. Plus the game restarted something like 3 times during it's development. We know they began planning for this game by at least 2009 and in 2016 - 7 years later - they didn't even have a playable Alpha test. That's amazing failure. Big cool ideas are great in theory, but they're worthless if you can't make a game out of them. Successful game companies are the ones that can find a middle ground between dreams and reality.

Right.... The guy who drove SOE into a 60 million dollar write-off was actually a genius! Thank you so much for clearing that up for us.
"As for the economical side of things, the details of the sale are
undisclosed. One could speculate, that the reason Sony chose to go ahead
with the sale of SOE was due to poor performance; for instance,
Sony recorded a 60 million U.S. dollars write-off of certain SOE titles
last year. With the recent restructuring within Sony, perhaps this move
is not all that surprising after all."
The guy who then started his own company only to have it crash and burn in a bit over a year.
He is such a good scapegoat and really knows how to use all that experience to better the companies he is with. LOL
I also think it is odd that you say: "It's quite well documented by devs and other team members that this was NOT Smed's decision."
but then you say: "Even Smed said, at the time, it was a "mutual" decision between SOE and LucasArts"
If it was a mutual decision and Smed was the leader of one of the two groups making that decision then how in the name of chicken nuggets can you possible say it was NOT Smeds decision?
If Smed was worth anything, SOE would not have preformed poorly and been sold off. If Smed was worth anything, Daybreak would have kept him on If Smed was worth anything, Pixelmage would not have died in a bit over a year
Not a scapegoat, a history of poor performance.
"Sean (Murray) saying MP will be in the game is not remotely close to evidence that at the point of purchase people thought there was MP in the game." - SEANMCAD
This is his chance to prove he is not a one trick pony. Was it the magic of the people at SoE or was it something he did? Im calling it his last chance. If he fails here, no one will touch him again in a position of leadership.

people always need the antagonist. the witch they can burn.
you know, running a business is difficult. its not always a choice you can make but a must.
give it a chance. it doesnt have an mpact on your real life anyway, so calm down.
Not to mention Lucas Arts was the publisher, that's usually who decides when and how products are released. That's the thing about all of this Smed hoopla. There were a lot of players in these decisions, yet not a single other entity is blamed but Smed. Even with SOE's performance as a whole, people miss the big picture and focus in on Smed. Not considering Sony itself may have simply not given two shits about SOE and wanted to phase it out for years. Which would drastically effect their ability to deliver.
As you said though there's gotta be that conduit all can use as a lighting rod for their ire. In this case that's Smed.
Attempting to defend Smedley is just ludicrous. He ran SOE into the ground. His only success was EQ and when that faded there was nothing to rest his laurels on although EQ2 did have some brief success. It was not just SWG that he messed up and that was his call, not Lucas Arts, it was the entire line up.
He really needs to find another line of work, because he does not seem to be able to do anything innovative that people like.
Stating the reality of LA's relationship to SOE with SWG is not defending Smedly, nor the reality that no one here knows jack crap about what went down behind closed doors at SOE.

Sorry, I thought I explained that better. The Executive response to something you don't agree with is nearly always that this is something we "mutually" feel is best for the company. As a high ranking official, you don't go rogue and bite the hand that feeds you or you're effectively blacklisted and won't work again.
i don't know whether PI failed or if he folded to go to Amazon. For SOE, I think that was more a Sony problem. If you can't sell subs to 5 or 6 games for $15 a month, all-in, you've got more problems than one executive. DBG? No idea. Until they release something new I will hold my comment.

I, on the other hand, regard him as have been an utter disaster for EQ2 from implementing F2P, enhancing the cash shop. Destroying the fun in the Dirge class, introducing the Beastlord class with mechanics that run totally counter to all the other classes. Releasing a content free Xpac, introducing casino like rewards. Moving from a multi-stat system to a primary stat system. Deprecating skills, doing a half backed revision of old weapons and armor to suit the new stat system. Creation of 'the golden path' for levelling, turning zones on their head and giving them a random shake and many more things.
Then there is the EQ Not! debacle
I even found his choice of name 'smokejumper' deeply offensive.
Lol, how the haters are crying, they though the Smed was dead Lmfao.
In a sense, Smedley is like Jesus. When you thought he was dead because you crucified him, he ascended to a better place instead.
If you have better analogy, please share here. :awesome:
More like a New York cockroach.... those effin things can survive anything.
That Smed is still in the video game industry after all the lying and BS he has pulled, running SOE into the ground, being fired and having a subsequent crowdfunding attempt fail, is a parallel example.
