I can't seem to get my 480 to do 4k 60hz. Lines flash through, Ive tried 4 different cables, it is a cyber power pc, I took it back once and it still does it. So it must be amd fault.  What seems to work for a bit, is if i switch from 1080p back to 2160p, but it still gets the flashes. I reformated installed fresh windows 10, and amd drivers. Tried messing with voltage, stock, lower, higher, and nothing works.  Lol great i updated my asus bios and now i get whole screen flashes.

Correct me if i am wrong but isnt that card way under-powered to be trying to run 4k games?

edit:  After reading up some more it appears i was correct. This card isnt designed for 4k gaming, or even 1440p gaming at high fps.

I run at 4320x2560 and 144 Hz on an AMD card, so the problem isn't what AMD can do.  Of course, I'm using a Fury X, which is a much more powerful card than an RX 480.

Some games don't handle high resolutions well.  For example, high resolutions in Trove make most in-game text vanish.  If it's fine on the desktop but problems only show up in particular games, it's likely a problem with the game.

What monitor do you have, anyway?  And what type of cable are you using to connect the video card to the monitor?

And what power supply do you have? If the above comment proves fine, but personally I think your flogging the bejesus out the 480 and was wondering what PSU you had.

Try opening your monitor's own settings menu, there should be a button on monitor to open it. Does it have same problem with the flashes?

hdmi 1.4 can only do 4k at 30hz, not 60hz, so you need a dataport cable, technically you can get 4k 60hz down a hdmi 2.0 cable, but it has to be supported by the gpu and by the monitor.

Its not a game, it just does it in windows. Its not a montior its a tv, and i had a 1060 and never had that problem. I tried 4 different hdmi cables, and none of them have this problem on my ps4 4k, or the 1060, it has to be AMD, it had the same problem with both computers. kruler said:

I believe it is a 700 watt thermatake, according to the cyber power people. Why am i flogging the bejesus out of a 480. My cheap dell venue 11 could run 4k movies, Ulitma online, and 4k resolution with no problems. Not to mention the ps4 does 4k 60 hz on ESO, Skyrim, and Smite with 0 problems, so I dont get why you guys think you need a 1080 gtx for 4k games. Maybe if your trying to run a newer game, with 16xaa. But games have nothing to do with this problem any ways, it does it in windows. If i switch resolutions it fixes it for awhile. Vrika said:

4k gaming is top of the line.  You can't just take a midrange gpu and expect good results.

I woulda suggested getting another RX-480 and running crossfire, which I will be doing when I do my next mobo/ CPU/ memory upgrade.

Also, just out of curiosity, if you were running a GTX1060, why did you switch to a RX-480?  Their performance is nearly identical.

Also, I would never trust a PC from Cyber Power, not after what they did to my friend's PC a few years ago.  It may very well be the way the PC is setup.

Carefully take out the screws from your card and remove it from your computer.   Take a nice photo of it and then carefully wrap it, put in a small box.  Then get on ebay and post it for sale.  Then get an Nvidia and put it into old computer. ;)

If the only thing you changed was the video card.  Then naturally its either the driver or the card.  There is nothing else that would cause this particular problem.

No i didnt change anything, I bought a cyber power pc from best buy. I took the computer back cause of the lines at 4k, and the new one did it. mgilbrtsn said:

What does 4k gaming have to do with lines through the screen at 4k 60hz? I got the results i wanted, minus the lines through the screen, and the random flashes. I only play Ryzom, Uo, and stellaris and they get over 60 fps at 4k.

Well since it runs at 60 hz, and I can tell the difference between when its set at 30fps and 60fps, amd has 2.0 hdmi. As for the tv, there are no 4k tvs i know of that are not 60hz, or 4k monitors. Amd must have 2.0 hdmi, because the playstation 4 pro runs at 60 fps at 4k on some games.

The 1060 wasent my card, I borrowed it to see, if it would stop the problem. I dont see how crossfire, will help, since one card has flashes no matter if I am in windows or games. I dont see what cyberpower has to do with it, they didnt do anything I see. They have it all set up fine. I wouldnt bust on cyberpower 2 much, there was no way to buy a computer they were selling for that cheap, even if you built it your self. It was 649, even if you used a hacked windows the pieces are over 649

is the tv you're using as a monitor actually a 4k tv?

Yep its actually a 4k tv. It works with my direct tv 4k, ps4 pro 4k, and the 1060 at 4k. It also worked on my dell venue 11 at 4k, but the laptop was only able to do 30 hz.

It's funny, my friend has always used Nvidia and he always talked crap about my old AMD card which i never had driver issues with. Now i just laugh when his Nvidia drivers crash every day trying to play modern games. I'm currently using a 970 and it's ok, but i should have waited for something better with real 4gb, not this 3.5gb scam. I don't know if i trust Nvidia after the 970 debacle. I'll probably sell it to my friend next time i travel to my country and visit him.

As for the OP topic, If i remember correctly Doom was tested running two 480s in crossfire mode in 4k at 60fps. I doubt a single 480 is enough.

My mobo supports crossfire but not sli so if i sell my 970 im surely getting two 480s.

People always say just go Crossfire or SLI

Crossfire and SLI will only work for a game if the game has support for Crossfire and SLI. There also needs to be Crossfire/SLI *driver* support for said game.

Don't go Crossfire/SLI blindly thinking it will solve all your issues or work with every game.

A Radeon RX 480 supports HDMI 2.0b, so it should theoretically have enough bandwidth.  You mention a PlayStation 4, but that's an older and lower end AMD GPU than the RX 480.

Cyber Power PC says that they don't sell a 700 W Thermaltake power supply.  It's possible that they used to but don't anymore, but it's not on their list today.  If you don't know what you have, then open up the case and read the label.  The brand name and wattage aren't enough, especially for a brand like Thermaltake that sells both pretty good power supplies and complete garbage.

It's possible that the video card is simply defective and replacing it by a different, non-defective RX 480 would fix the problem.  It's a recent enough card that it should still be under warranty.

So its either the system or the GPU.  Just return it and get something else.

Is anything in your rig overclocked?  If so, try undoing the overclock.

Red lines sounds like it could be a GPU failing.
  • IselinIselin Member LegendaryPosts: 18,719
Is it possible you have a 4096 (4K) vs. 3840 (UHD) mismatch between your desktop resolution and the TV?

Your driver will support 4096 or "true 4K" but most 4K TVs and monitors are actually UHD 3840. The PS4's max resolution is, I believe, also 3840.

Easy enough to check and make sure your driver is set to 3840.

This is his second computer system that does the same thing.

I suspect the problem is PEBKAC.  Also, Best Buy and Cyber Power PC - the best of both worlds right there. This whole thread sounds like trollbait, starting with the title and continuing on.

In the event that hatefulpeace is not really a troll and doesn't understand that people stab each other over this stuff  - good luck with your computer, just go buy that 1060 and game happy with it.

What do you mean the settings menu? No the tv doesnt have flashes though the menu. It is only when it runs at 4k 60 hz.

In case of a TV, I meant take the remote control and use it to open some of the TV's own menu so that it fills part of the screen while you're at 4K 60 Hz and seeing if
      a) The whole screen flashes, or
      b) Only the part of picture that comes from the GPU flashes while the TV's own menu works okay.

With TV it might be a bit more complicated than with a monitor. Monitors usually have settings menu that fills only a corner of the screen, whereas with TV you might end up with full-screen menus.

But if you've tested it with Geforce 1060 using 2010p at 60Hz and it's worked fine like that, then maybe the test I suggested is not that important.

Does RX 480 have same problems when you're running at 1080p? Or do the problems only affect 4K resolution?
