I feel the same. I have been playing MMO's since 1999 and been finding myself going back to older ones like LOTRO, DAoC etc. instead of the new stuff of today. None of the MMO's today have the same excitement I enjoyed like the older MMO's. Still hoping for an SWG 2, but know that will never happen :(

Been playing MMOs since late 90s and still I'm playing.
Not as hardcore as before but more casual, I rotate between games depend on what mood I am.
When I get my Star Wars urge I play TOR, when I get my Star Trek urge I play STO, when I want to just play a classic themepark I play ESO, and when I want to grind craft and explore I play BDO and when I just want to play PVP in a MMO I fire up GW2.

So I don't really stick with just one MMO.
I'd say your playing style is normal for many players these days.

When all games are equally average, it makes sense to average your playing time among them equally.
Yep just an regular average Joe, and it's healthy too :)

I actually brushed EQ aside,it simply was not good enough for me.I stuck to playing Unreal and Quake a lot at the time.
I finally found FFXI by accident,a friend who was a big FF fan told me i might like it based on the ideals i mentioned to him.He said it was not out yet but coming so i watched some promos and was hooked.Once in i was even more impressed, the game was hard, started me in a city which makes sense and ZERO hand holding,no markers,no arrows,no sparklies, yep i was happy.

Soon their employees started to move on and SE changed a lot.So i took note of two new upcoming games ,Wow and EQ2.I started EQ2 and liked it.A week later i tried Wow and did not like it,it looked like the same thing as eq2 but cheaper and worse. So i spent most my time playing EQ2 while still playing FFXI.

Tired of EQ2's design and soon FFXI pissed me off with a change in direction. So here i am ,a fanbois of nothing,i simply wait for something good and creative to come along.Instead all i see is a plethora of crappy cheap arpg's,mobas, half assed tcg's, and mobile games, all which i wouldn't give any a rating better than 3/10.
So not only am i not seeing quality game design,i am being force fed utter crap and marketing/advertising is making it far worse yet because they are shoving it in my face and trying to tell me the crap tastes good.

I'm nearly 20 years older than I was in 1999.
    Wow, me too!! lol

Yea, I've been deep in the rut before. Just keep trying games until you get a spark. I got it again with BDO, then with Legion....which was a surprise. Don't try to force it or you will just get depressed lol.

What is the point to play the same game over and over again? There is nothing new in the MMORPGs since WoW and L2. These two completely opposite games drew the circle, and all later MMORPGs are placed in that circle. If you played both - WoW and L2, you played literally every MMORPG. There are some technical innovations, better graphics, better physics of movement, but still there is no MMORPG with true action combat like FPS or M&B. Anyway the rest of the gameplay stays the same.
    Can i have your internet?

I'm not really a veteran, per se, at MMOs. The only one I really ever liked was 2008-2011 Runescape, and I played it religiously. It took time to level up, gear was a big deal to get, and each quest clear and level up felt like a real accomplishment. I recently came back to Runescape, and it's not at all like what it was. Ever since, I've been chasing "my first high" by trying newer games, trying to recapture that feeling of adventure, accomplishment, and community. Sadly, MMOs nowadays are moneygrabs and/or themeparks with quick leveling and endless dungeon running, with little communication with other players.

Here's hoping Camelot Unchained will break the streak of themepark drivel and grant me what I've been looking for: An MMO to call home.

I have to say I'm on the same boat as you. Maybe they're right about how over time our preferences change. It's still hard to get over the fact there isn't exactly anything to really put yourself into when you've played something like this before. Maybe I shouldn't compare, but I just want to find a virtual reality I can feel at home with for a couple of years... Instead of a month. While I watch the forums, waiting for some thing interesting to come up, I've been playing PS1 and SNES titles.

How about filling the void with something you like?  :)

Can't agree, EVE is markedly different from those two, as are some others who mostly predate 2004.

OK, fair point. There are many unique things in EvE. In general it is close to the circle, but outside. Maybe there are other games too, as I do not know every MMORPG released, and specially these in Asia. But even if we take EvE as exclusion, it is a pretty old game, so it does not change the main point - nothing really new on the market.
Is OK, wasn't successful enough to really spawn many imitators, even CCP stepped away when they closed down their vampire franchise and sold off the remains.

Nope because I stopped comparing everything to games I use to play.
    Exactly.

MMO "vets" sound like a bunch of old people sitting around pining for the old days when they didn't have to use a walker to get around.

What makes it worse is that I'm likely older than most of them.

Part of growing up is letting go of the past.

Not if you find the present to be a lot less interesting by comparison.  Some people will say that it's exciting now with all the technological advancements.  To an extent that is true, but a lot of imagination has been lost in the information age.  People are all logical thinking now.  They question everything that is presented to them.  That takes away from the enjoyment of gaming.  People are also always on a schedule now.  They don't just relax and have some fun.  It's always go go go.  I might fit in some gaming here and I'll watch a show there.  I think most of us have moved on, but we feel more comfortable in that time period.  I feel a lot healthier now and more knowledgeable now, but I had a lot more fun then.  I would go back to that saying of ignorance is bliss.

i feel the exact same way as you...i totally agree,, its painful,, i LOVE mmos and have been playing since 2000 with everquest,, then DAoC too.. i cant fully feel the spark any more,,i will on a rare occasion find a game that i last a month or two in and be excited that something stuck, but it falls off fast, its not like the old days when id be stuck for years and having the time of my life..... right now i have all my hopes put into Pantheon and/or Camelot Unchained... i think finally the mmo industry is realizing that the oldschool feel in mmos is what the real MMORPGers want and need.. for like 10 years every game was a wow clone, and still many are being built that way. I believe times are changing finally and things will get better for us oldschool crowd.... its nice to hear im not alone and that there is a crowd of us wanting the same thing... all us old school mmogers should stick together and meet up in games since we all feel the same way.

if anyone wants a gamer friend to check out or try dif games with, add me on steam.. i am constantly in the search for a mmo that will keep my attention and i am open to trying anything.

The reality is that the gaming culture isn't going to revert back. Those days are gone. The market isn't there, no matter how much the old school devotees want it to be.

The youth today were spoon-fed on instant gratification with a side plate of special snowflakes. They are mostly incapable of patience and certainly don't know how to handle disappointment and failure.

An old school MMO would kick their asses hard and send them catapulting toward the moon faster than you can say "entitlement".

Our choices are stop playing games or reluctantly welcome our new gaming overlords.

Take my advice: Find a freeshard.

Don't sit alone with the Pain.   Load up a freeshard of your favorite mmo and find a guild to roll with.
It is the only way us addicts can survive.

Use that to get you through until a new game comes out - Patheon or whatever you are looking forward to.

    EQ progression servers.

DAoC - Uthgard 2.0   (This is what I am playing and it is a fking BLAST.  I'ts only a couple months old, lots of people lvling).

    Kronos for Vanilla WoW.

The way mmo's were: Community, Exploration, Character Development, Conquest.

The way mmo's are now : Cut-Scenes,Cut-Scenes, solo Questing, Cut-Scenes...

Have to agree, playing a freeshard and realized, yes you can go home again.

One problem "some" old people have is not recognizing what they've lost, so acceptance of the now comes easily and without a fight. ;)

Me, I'll go down swinging with my (mostly) futile acts of defiance. ;)
