Does she own the movie lisence as well? If not, the game could be based on the movies just like all the rest of EA's games considering the website says EA will be developing it. Also, who is POGO, it says they are working on it as well...
This could be fun. Im not a Harry Potter fan as such athlough I did enjoy the books. Yet Im curious to how this could work. We all know that EA arnt excatly the best in the business for making 'good' games. Yet maybe they could redeem themselfs with this MMO. I know youll have a lot of kids wanting to play it so the game would have to be very very user friendly. As for the PvP side I would expect something similar to the Dueling Club from the books. The Spells and 'leveling' system would be intresting to see. As would how they would use the prefects, quidditch, and the classes (as in lessons). Those enviroment screenshots do look nice espically the inner room with the book piles. But will it all be static? or will we see the same style deployed here as in the films with teh staircases, candles and books floating around and various others objects and animations. Also what about the hosues? That could be intresting too? Who wants Hufflepuff? Or even ravenclaw? After all we know who the best houses for kdis to goto are...
Anyway I hope to read and see more about this. It seems like a intresting take on a slowly dying out style. After all we've seen thsi style of game before from big licenses... ToonTown Online for one.

PS. Pogo is the online game system that EA uses. http://www.pogo.com So this adds more credit towards the existance of the game.
they are developing for EA for the upcoming "Hogwarts Online".
That right there tells me it will be utter crap. EA can't do MMO's. Look what happened to UO, EnB, and MCO...not to mention the MMO's that never came to be *cough* UO2 *cough*. EA does one thing good, and that is make sport games.
I'm a fan of the Potter books, and if an MMO were to come out in that universe it could be entertaining...but not with EA having anything to do with it. It'd be an EQ/AC/Diablo 2 clone or something.
And yes, if you haven't noticed I don't like EA...
I fought the whole Harry Potter craze for years, stubbornly insisting that they were kids books and could never hold a candle to 'real' fantasy. However, I caved in just a couple of months ago, and ended up reading all five books in about a week and a half (needless to say, I liked them quite a bit).
If this info is real, I'll most likely give it a shot. However, I remain cautious. There are many things they could do wrong in converting the setting to an MMO.
You know what? I think I'd play it if it actually showed up.
There's one simple reason, immersion. If they stick closely to the book they it should have a seemless feel to it, and that's a mmorpg I'd love to play.
I just found one thing...if you look under the other sections of the portfolio, you can see art work still for EnB. While this may be just for "look what we can do," it also does kind of suggest that the site may be outdated.

Just a thought.
They have work from the Sims 2 on there... that was recent
Well, could be good, might not. If they make it, id likely try it on a beta of free trial, but knowing EA they will probably screw it up so they get as much money as quickly as possible.
I think it's the objective of your past self to make you cringe.
I would DEFINATELY play it. I don't care if it seems like it will be for kids. I loveed the harry potter movies and i would love to play hogwarts online.
I too would like to see this. However, I'll remain skeptical until the day I actually set foot in the game, because...
1) It's supposedly being developed by EA... self-explanatory and touched on by previous posters. Not gonna work and already says a lot about the people in charge of this project for letting a company of such poor notoriety take charge.
2) It would NEVER attain the necessary 'immersion' level - you might be one of the lucky ones that disagrees after trying the actual game, but there will ALWAYS be that nasty crowd of 13/40 year old Potter fan boys that complain about continuity. Everyone's an expert. But even that said, I have my doubts that such an immersive, well-polished book would ever translate well into the shallow world of today's MMO market - not unless it was done, perhaps, by Blizzard (who, game mechanics aside, would probably be the only ones in my opinion that could honestly pull off the game artistically and give it that 'feel').
After reading a book, you have a solid picture in your mind of what things are supposed to be like - and it's a very rare event that movies, games, etc. are able to emulate that same feeling and not piss you off in the process.
3) It's extremely experimental. I doubt EA can pull it off. I can think of plenty of Harry Potter 'elements' and MMORPG 'elements' that would never mesh. How would you level, and what would you level in? Hack 'n slash / magical combat against the rat infestation in the Hogwarts dungeon? The Potter franchise isn't violent enough to pit you against 'real' people NPC's regularly, and it wouldn't even be fun because it'd just be a copy of every other MMO on the market within a limited scope. Suppose they do come up with viable mechanics where this is concerned, EA doesn't have the capacity - as proven in the past - to 'lead the way' so to speak with such experimental elements. And while someone on this thread may come up with a perfectly reasonable suggestion for this department, there are many more elements besides that... that just wouldn't translate properly into an MMO platform without looking cheap and 'cut and paste' from previous MMO's.
Most of my skepticism just stems from the fact that the MMO market is bloated with games like this and EA is a failure as a development company. I would love to see a Potter MMO pulled off right, but the franchise is just too mainstream and the 'powers that be' wouldn't risk themselves on a lesser-mainstream company that would be able to do it right - EA has the trademark name in the gaming world in and out of the MMO/RPG market, they're popular for a reason, so who of the Potter crew would think otherwise?
I have looked all over the internet and can't find a single thing on a Hogwarts Online, so I did the obvious and looked under the contact list for the new pencil site and sent one of the guys an e-mail asking him if it was stilla reality. The graphics look pretty nice, but EA didn't say anything at E3. I know they planned an MMO a long time ago based on Harry Potter but reading up on it, it looks like it got scrapped. I guess we shall see.
I agree with the previous poster in many ways. A Harry Potter based game done right would be awesome, but EA scares me with any game, I don't even like madden lol. If they made Hogwarts Online it would have to be a skill based game where you improved your skills by using them and practicing....ie....classes. The game would start off with you getting your acceptance letter to Hogwarts and go from there. The problem is there is a limited world, but the environment and lore from the books is there and if done right could be very good and one of the ROLEPLAYING MMOs out there. Just my 2 copper pieces.
I think there would be PvP now with the new book out. Im not going to give anything anyway but there was some fighting and deaths IN hogwarts. I could definently see that they implement death eaters as a way to play the game. hidden within hogwarts or not.

Dead Scot,
First and foremost I would like to say that the New Pencil site is very well polished and impressive to look at. I was wondering if I could ask you a question regarding some of the images that were posted. In the environments section there were some thumbnails of environments that were from Hogwarts Online, does this mean that there is an MMORPG in development based on the world that J.K. Rowling created. I know you are very busy, but I had to ask as it is impossible to find any information on the subject. Thank you very much for your time.
You can choose whether to believe me or not, but I e-mailed him yesterday because I was interested. It sucks...but the fact that he said it was a cool idea maybe will bring about some sort of HP MMORPG in the future.
Dear santa .. ive been a good (its up to me how i define good) boy all year and i only have one wish for christmas.. please make it so Stupid game ideas never see daylight and..oh please kill Harry pothead before its too late...
Harry Potter, like Pokemon, or Star Wars screams MMORPG potential. All I would love to see is a magic system where magic is launched by saying the words yourself (Mic?) or at least typing them. And/or by waiving the wand in a certain pattern. Like if you hold down the left mouse button and move the wand around the screen it leaves a light trail that you have to draw in a certain pattern to do certain spells. I think another game had this but I never played it.
