I lost £150 on the collectors edition, but have kept going back when a nice chunk of content awaited me and the game has been installed on my system ever since launch, after seeing these story's to day is what really broke it for me and I have just uninstalled it for good and cancelled my pre-order for mass effect, I'm done with bioware the developer I use to love.

You got that super sweet Darth Malgus statue though. Maybe in the year 2040 you'll be able to sell it on ebay for $150.

When a game has loot boxes/crates that give you random items, there is often a lot of people complaining about the RNG nature of it. They often say 'if only I could buy the items from the box directly, I would like to avoid RNG".
So when a game tries to do this, people (probably another segment than the one asking for it) also complain.

These random boxes/crates are there for a reason. They sell well and it's a good (and easy?) way to gain profit for the company.
I imagine, that to avoid the RNG nature of the boxes, it will have to be costly to offset the lost profit from box/crate sales.

The companies really can't win this one.

Personally I think it is an interesting experiment.

Mind Boggling Mentally Unstable Move made by BioWare a.k.a EaWare. Their Greedy & Often Half Blind Overlords known as EA - Electronic Arts already have Sacked most of Eaware's Swtor Ops a.k.a Raid Design Crew. Now they keep doing this Crap.. Say keep Doing cause of another one is coming later. If rumors r true it almost comes with New Game Price Tag like this Ugly LS does & it having one of Higest in game store item price doesn't make it most powerful weapon in the Galaxy. #SillyBoys #Bioware

After been around in #MMO Genre from 2004 i thought i've seen the highest lvl of Greed with in Game Store pricing, but #ElectronicArts never fails to Surprise & now Shot Pricing to new Heights. Done with setting one silly Design Lightsaber to cost more than 55 Dollars & propably not even Legacy bound, but need to get it for other chars 2 if want. #Greed #BlindGreed Swtor's Ops Design Crew maybe has 1-2x ppl now cause of making Mind Boggling Decision to release 1x Ops Boss per month or 2x Months. After True Mmo'ers at #Swtor waited new Ops for +1,5 years.. No other Mmo Developing Company ever released 1x Encounter per Month or 2x Months. #MindBoggled #Brainstorm #Silly #MmoRaid #Raiding

Left behind this currently at Half Mmo status in Dec 2016. Kept Sub non stop from Launch to that month so it lasted 4.9y & regret last 8x months of it. No progression via Proper Development path happened since spring -16 to end of year :/ Only was BioWare's Greedy Half Blind ways of Cashing in $ from Lost Sheepies. Done with offering Hk-47 Bonus Mission to be released at Autumn -16 & ppl who sub for all those months of waiting will got it.

It had pretty good story behind it, BUT it had Fem Droid with very Annoying Voice that was like Angst Teen trying to break Free. Dev who had the idea for that Voice need to take some #Medication or clear head via #Meditation. Also they cashed in with such stupid moves like giving #Hk55's Equipment in multiple sets for ppl who sub for that long period of time.. I also bought things from #Swtor's in Game Store known as Cartel Market & did it couple times. Until realised that it's a #Bad move as it just feeds the #ElectronicArts #Greed #Hunger & then Proper #Development takes longer.

Naturally Saddest thing in all that Hk items case is.. Many Lost Sheepies poured down the cash for cosmetic things.. Earning in modern day is easy when you have "good" Minds planning & have no backbone while executing the plan "EA - Electronic Arts". I also Endured Mom & Daughter Feud Storyline that came with Kotfe Expansion & continued with Kotet. Kotet also brought silly things like option to Redeem big baddy during Mom & Daughter Feud.

One thing Blizzard does well with their Old Warhorse Mmo called World of Warcraft: Their in Game Store is very small (about 10'ish mounts, pets each & a few cosmetic helms) and they are all direct purchase. When new items are added they often give 80-100% of the proceeds to #Charity for the first month or so as well :) Everything else can be earned in game at World of Warcraft. Hundreds of pets, mounts, toys & armor sets.

Think the money Blizz got from there has gone to Make-a-wish. Of the $10 spent, $5 went to charity & $5 went to Blizzard. Seemed fair enough :) Could you imagine if $1 of every Cartel Box in Star Wars: The Old Republic went to charity & $5 from bigger CM Sales. We'd be running out of places to Dig Wells on this beautiful The Planet Earth :) Also many 3rd World Countries / Poor Countries would get well built Houses & Irrigation areas. Naturally Super Greedy EA - Electronic Arts & their Lapdoggy crew Eaware & officially BioWare won't do it with Star Wars: The Old Republic :( Currently Half Mmo "Wasn't always" that uses Outdated & Glitchy Game-Engine known as #HeroEngine & Cartoonish Gfx comparable to Star Wars Rebels.

At the moment it's Half Mmo & that's run with Outdated & Glitchy Game-Engine still in 2017. Has some Eye Hurting Animations & occasional Combat & movement Glitches.. Here's Tweet made about the Sale:

They are not rare because of a limited amount , they are rare in game because there are not enough people dumb enough to waste 60$ on a lightsabre skin. EA definately doesn't want to keep them rare, they hope everyone and their aunt buys one.

You do realise that when you are walking around with one, many players think you are a sad person for buying one, right?
Why would people think you are sad person if you bought it off the GTN with in game currency?  I think you missed the part that you don't have to spend $ to buy one.  Don't get me wrong.  $60 for this lightsaber is ridiculous.  But getting one isn't exclusive to buying it with real life money.
Well you cant buy it without somebody spending real money. The fact that said person can post auction of it doesnt change the fact that it is ONLY obtainable with real money before it is even in game. So, every single one in game was payed with real money.
This lightsaber was available during the DvL event and out of cartel packs (which also cost money).  It's not like they are only available always for $60.  It is a week long sale and while I would personally never pay that much for a cosmetic.  A lot of sub players (myself included) have a ton of cartel coins(cash shop currency) from our subs that have accumulated.  As someone else has said earlier.  But I admit I can understand why some people are upset by this.

That will be a ridiculous amount of credits, which makes it just a little less sad for a tiny shiny hilt.
Still, someone else seeing you with it (if they even notice it lol), could still wonder if you were someone actually buying it from the store :p

Now let's wait for the people actually defending this kind of cash shop shit, by saying that they support the game by doing this. (not realising that the only thing they are telling EA, is that they like to buy ridiculously overpriced bling from the shop).
I've accumulated enough credits in game to buy almost a dozen of these at 100 million credits each.  Once you buy up all the gear sets (cosmetic) you like off the GTN.  You end up having a lot of credits.  I know how to play the GTN really well and have made a killing without ever spending one $ in the cartel shop.  I think the only people who will think like yourself are those that don't actually play this mmo.

And how is this different from literally all the other cartel shop items on sale on the GTN?  Are you only complaining about it now because of this limited time price?  The game has to make $ to stay alive.  The Cartel Market has not one item that is P2W or helps you in game to have an advantage (unless you count XP boosters as P2W lol).  I'm really failing to understand what your point is.  Do you maybe just have an axe to grind with SWTOR?

Very well might be true. But I also think the idea behind this wasn't so insidious as some have put it. That lightsaber is probably the rarest and most expensive item on the GTN. Some people have spent hundreds of dollars trying to get it out of rng boxes. For those people, this is a good deal. I personally don't want to see this happening. But, it's a cosmetic item only and really isn't that big of a deal to me.

To any idiot or superfan who buys this, you're what's wrong with gaming. You let them know there's a market out there for this type of shit and they love it. Christ, just go buy another game for 60 dollars. Get some enjoyment out of it.

So what's the difference between this and telling a sports car enthusiast that buying a Porsche is ruining the automobile industry? You think companies like EA don't understand their markets? Such an ignorant statement prefaced with your typical insult "idiot" go figure. Individuals are allowed to judge what they do with their money, even in gaming.

It's like people hating on games that offer the ownership of a virtual town for a few thousand bucks, the gaming industry is a new industry, it's gaining recognition as a business and professionalizing a lot. In the future as the industry grows you will see more and more varied types or tiers for purchasing virtual goods in these services.

It's like going to a concert, you have different prices for the different seat sections. And likewise examples can be found in every other entertainment business form. Pretty much. It's your typical case of an older generation telling the newer generation "You're doing it wrong.", "This isn't how it's meant to be.". Businesses evolve and changes and progression are inevitable if they want to survive. Adapt or cease to exist.
It is not that simple. You see, buying items from a item shop give devs reason to put time and resources into item shops. If nobody would buy them, they would cease to exist. Everybody is complaining about item shops, especially in b2p and p2p games but yet, those seems to be profitable exactly because people use them.
Look this way - every single cosmetic could as well be put into core game as a drop, reward from boss/achivement/etc instead it is used as real money purchase.
People complain about overpriced items, about BDO costumes (which btw is victim of that trend - people buy any overpriced shit so why bother into puting any costumes into core game?), etc.
In general, anybody who buys anything from item shop work against his own interest as a gamer. Same as pre ordering or using early acces/kickstarter. It is not good for the industry and for the gamers. But devs would do that which give them money - if they would get rewarded for making good games, they would try really hard to make good game. Instead they are rewarded for making item shops.

To clarify - i dont have any problem with item shops as long as they are not p2w in any way, shape or form. I dont use them and never will use them UNLESS i can do that without spending any money.

Sadly, people do not understand the issue. It people didn't spend money on X, it is true that X would cease to exist.... but so would the games that they support. The issue is not that developers sell stuff (however way you do not like) or sell items (that you do not like being sold). The issue is that the developers are making a product (thing that they sell) to meet the market (and not vice versa).  They see where the money is being spent, and try to get a share of the revenue.

If people stop spending on methods they don't like, it does fix the problem... by killing the games. The only real way to fix the issue (and keep the games they like) is to spend MORE money on the methods that they do like, and then developers will change the games to try to get a piece of THAT pie.

...and that is how it always has been and how it is with games - developers follow the money and that is why there are F2P and cash shops, people clearly prefer those.

And it is all fine, people like and do spend money on their hobbies/entertainment. Nothing wrong with that, pretending that games should be somewhat different in that regard is just silly.

That complementary award is going to put to good use by most. I think cosmetics are fine if people want to spend real money on them or the rewards for subbing no issue there for me at all. Let the game make money off people who do buy these vanity items. Good method to make money since it is not P2W.

We had WoW clones for decades because developers saw the money being spent on WoW, and wanted a piece of the pie. We saw games add cash shops because developers saw people spending money there. We saw games convert to F2P because developers saw people choosing them. Game developers chases player/customer actions. Anyone choosing NOT to play or NOT to spend money is just allowing someone else to decide for them.

This is why the answer is not if you do not like it, don't buy it. The answer is if you do not like it, spend 10x as much money on something else... and all the game developers will change to try to get your money.

I never understood the people that bought these kind of things. Its not about the money either, I could shell out 60 bucks it wont kill me but I personally play mmo's for that sense of accomplishment.  To me walking around with that shiny lightsaber you bought is the equivalent  to a big game hunter with a trophy room full of animal heads someone else shot.

Now with all the said im not opposed in the least to cash shops or overpriced items, If it works for you and makes you happy more power to you, But for me, i just dont get it.

This is a lockbox item that for a limited time can be directly purchased. I've seen a lot of people on this forum post that if items are in lockboxes they should be available for direct purchase even for more money. So here EA is doing what the gaming forum community asked for. Seems like they're listening to their customers.
To top it off It was players selling stuff to each other for ridiculous amounts back in the day, long before cash shops were a thing,  that showed devs many would simply prefer to buy their virtual items/advancement rather than grind for them/it.

Those old sites were highly active for years, from characters to light sabers, and everything in between, people paid high dollar for these things. Far more than they are now.

This is a test to see exactly how far we can push things in the MMO age of shameless, money-grubbing greed.
As if people weren't paying far more for things back before devs started selling it. Players started this trend themselves...

As someone who has never bought gold or characters or accounts for any MMO I've ever played, my perspective on this is very different from those who have and do.

In those old days you're talking about, those very few people who bought things in the underground markets bought things like leveled-up characters and items that gave them power for playing the game or just gold to buy those things themselves in the game - 100% P2W stuff, not fluffy shit but at least their focus was still on playing the game.

And most of the legit players who did not buy anything from those sources thought of those who did as pathetic losers. And they were encouraged to look at them that way by the companies that were 100% against such practices.

The change came about when the companies decided to sell those things themselves. Once they started promoting it those same pathetic losers became their preferred customers overnight and since most developers wanted to avoid the P2W label, they started developing to cater to those who care more about possessing cosmetic virtual goods than playing a good game. And that shit obviously sells well to the new customers who are there for a very different reason than those who still just want to play a good game.

There is nothing that explains the difference between the old and the new MMO communities more than that one change: there are still those of us who are there to play games just because they have enjoyable mechanics, good character development, interesting stories, etc., but now we play side by side with the many who are there mostly just to dress up and show off their rare and expensive possessions in crowded hubs.

Now instead of being encouraged to think of them as pathetic pseudo-gamers, we're supposed to think of them as great customers who help keep the game doors open through their considerate support for the company... yeah, we did this to ourselves... not.

I've never really cared about those people then or now TBH, certainly not enough to label them as anything like pathetic losers. That seems a bit harsh.

It seems to me there has always simply been a contingent of gamers who prefer "looking cool" and showing off flash, rather than caring about playing and excelling at gameplay. It's not like it truly effected PVP or other areas of the game from my perspective, as most of those types weren't good enough due to not actually learning to play to do much harm. A good example are those who purchased their alpha class Jedi in pre-cu SWG.

"Players" was obviously used to say players in general there, not you or anyone else who didn't partake in those practices. I personally always felt it defeated the purpose of playing an MMORPG at all. Just as buying cosmetics does now, or using console cheats in TES games to get all your gear, quest progression, levels, skills, etc....

Yet if that's what people want to do, that's what they want to do. Considering in most cases that stuff can be purchased in game through everyday means of following the game rules, those who prefer "earning" their stuff are still served with the challenge of obtaining it with in-game gold at least.

It is not really so much about looking cool either, there were always players who liked to flash hard to get cool gear even in the early MMOs. The message was more "I could get this rare and cool gear".

Now the message is more "I spent 60 bucks on my weapon", that isn't a statement I want to make personally but I guess some people want to make it.

I don't think this really is what the majority of players want, just enough to make it worthwhile for EA and then some. There is almost zero work to make a platinum lightsaber so there is a huge payback even if just a few thousand players buy them.

That is certainly true, although I'd point out we were talking about those who bought their stuff off the black market sites back then, which I think was still somewhat of similar motivation, it was as much I had $1000 to buy my jedi as it is having $60 for my mount now. It's just vanity at work IMO..

I can't help it but that seems like win-win scenario....
