It's got a crap name and a stupid setting. Spaceships flying around with hundreds of heroes with superpowers aboard it. .. jeez.
I feel the same way (thought I wouldn't have phrased it a little more delicately) Companies being able to make an MMORPG isn't the problem, there are new MMORPGs coming out every month, but making just a decent one seems to be where the problem comes in. I don't feel these guys have done enough research or have the range or expertise required to make an interesting and fun MMORPG. And I loved CoH.
I am also running a Kickstarter and GoFundMe campaign for my new game. It is already well under-developed and we have so many free Unreal Assets we cant even squeeze them all into our IMMENSE OPEN WORLD SANDBOX NON-LINEAR QUEST BASED CRAFTING MMORPG WITH ACTION COMBAT, MEANINGFUL PROGRESSION, FULLY VOICED, PLAYER RUN ECONOMY , MOUNT TAMING, WINGS/FLYING, VEHICLE COMBAT IN SPACE, ON HORSE WITH LASER LANCES AND AK-47S.
I only need $399,000 to get this thing into early access on steam where it is GUARANTEED TO BE AN INSTANT CLASSIC.
The game will be buy to play forever with a subscription model for success that gives you access to a microtransaction market that will not be p2w because the market will be available to anyone who can pay the money needed to get their end game raid boss mounts/gear!!!
Below are the 3 current pledge packages that are offered. Supplies are as limited as our Unreal Assets, so please hurry! We also plan to have stretch goals that will allow us to add tons of new content to the game like a mail system, an inventory hotkey, combat dmg text and colors!!!!!
Silver Package $39.99

In Game Item: Flask of Snakeoil

This game has been under development for a bit under a year. I think it is pretty impressive how far they have gotten. All of the developers are CoH nerds, and want to make a game as close as possible to the original without getting sued by NCsoft. Don't expect a carbon copy, as I am sure NCsoft is ready, willing and able to defend their IP. And up to now it has been financed out of their own pockets.
The character generator is something they are working hard to make the best in the business. They are well aware that the CoH fanbase wants a really good one with a lot of variables.
The sci-fi ship setting allows them ultimate freedom for expansion, as well as a huge variety of bad guys. Some people rag on the name of their first enemy group, the Nagdelian race. But this is actually a word puzzle showing the devs humor.
NAGD ELIAN rearrange the letters and you get;
DANG ALIEN
Here is the latest video they have made showing their progress. They still have a ways to go, of course. The game is still pre-alpha. The animation for the cape in the video needs work, and they know that. This video shows a signature character from creation in the character generator, through a flight around the city and finishes in battle side by side with other signature heroes fighting an alien mech. And yes, they plan on having extensive and highly customizable body types available, with many varieties of costume pieces including Anime types. They also plan to allow people to customize their powers extensively, from color all the way to animation.
@nanfoodle Ship of Heroes has been transparent about their dev timline, which they have followed since the launch of the site Nov 2016. They are launching KS with the base level, Character Creator, Powers/Combat Demo, UI, Signature NPCs, and today flight and team combat demo on the KS page... they will begin Alpha testing in 2017 and Beta in 2018, with a game launch in 2019. Leadership and management of the project is strong and so far they have done what they said they would every step of the way.
And yet they dont say a word what this 400k is for.

But reading their page, it seems they have invested their own money to get the game to Alpha and the 400k is to finish it.
Would get more pledges IMO if they said this was the funds to finish the game. I guess for now your guess is the best we have
I don't really feel it's a guess. From their page:
People say that MMOs can't succeed on Kickstarter these days, because
everyone has been burned by scams. But we've invested our own savings
to build a playable alpha with team combat first, so you don't have to
take our word for it. You can see for yourself how the game will look.
We've also proven that we can actually build a game on time. We've
posted a rapid development schedule on our website. We've hit every
milestone, and will continue to do so.
Of course, an alpha is not a finished game. There's much more we want
to add: new enemy factions, missions, giant raids, planets... the list
goes on. Every dollar you donate will bring us closer to launching.
If you read the FAQ on the KS page it outlines what they plan to spend the money on.
The leader into this story above appears to incorrectly state its to bring it to a playable alpha state, when they are claiming to already have reached that milestone at present.
Amateurs, forget the KS, dont these guys know "early access" is the way to go these days, especially when leveraging an iconic IP. (even if only indirectly)

The premise alone still keeps me from even considering this game as an option to fund or take seriously. I more than most play these types of superhero MMOs, but I can't get behind this one.

Hmm and your signature says 'Loan me a dragon I wanna see space'

Correct! It was a quote from a "music video" on youtube. It's ridiculous.
That being said, I've played just about every super hero MMO there is... heck I even have artwork in CO, as they had that emblem contest while it was still in beta and I was one of the winners.
Those "credentials" make the game look even more suspicious.
I personally don't consider "passionate lifelong gamer" to be good credentials or how the dev team page looks like a bunch of pictures taken from a social media site and posted up with all very similar bios and zero information about prior employment. There isn't a single gaming company named(or any company) as prior employment by any of those people which is usually what devs usually throw around if they were actually employed by one.
400K for what... to make a tech demo? I think its time for KSers to be honest. What is your plans for this 400k? Also cant wait to see if all the CoH fans back this. See if they miss their game as much as they say they do.
I loved CoX, but that doesn't mean I'm going to throw money at any ole group of folks promising to revive it in spirit.
Not sure why that would disqualify me from missing CoX. They're asking for a large sum of money to bring the game to a playable alpha with a team of folks who don't have a whole helluva lot of experience to help legitimize the project timeline of feature list. Sorry, but that's just a bad investment, and that's a decision made with one's head, not one's heart (so truly, no offense to anyone on the Ship of Heroes team).
With the Unity Asset Store and Unreal Engine's marketplace, it's really difficult to distinguish how far these devs really are into their projects.
Easy to make what one would believe to be a AAA in the making.
I will say that this particular project does look legit, but has a long way to go.
That's why I generally assume, no matter what the videos show when a developer is using these, that thay're approximately as far as all the premade assets on the engine's marketplace will allow, and no further.

Before you slam this project, take a look at the dev team's credentials.
