It's a Polaris refresh.  Increase clock speeds a bit and increment the model number by 100.
  • RidelynnRidelynn Member EpicPosts: 7,383
Makes me wonder about Vega. I was expecting a 5x0 Polaris refresh, but I was expecting it would come with Vega SKUs in that lineup as well.

Damnit, and here i just bought a 480 for 150 bucks lol.

Wait nvm 6-8 fps is not worth 100 dollars more.

That's actually a solid card for the price.

    I thought a 480 at $200 was a good deal, $150 is phenomenal.

    Would a 580 be a decent gain over a gtx 970?

How much of an upgrade is the RX 570 over my GTX 970? Or the RX 580 since that one has 8GB

If you mean "I can pick either one for the same price", then yes, an RX 580 is better than a GTX 970.  If you mean "I already have a GTX 970 and am considering upgrading", then don't.  If you upgrade, you want to at least double the performance of your old card, and that puts you closer to GTX 1080 territory.

Is the Radeon RX 570 better than a GeForce GTX 970?  Probably, but not by much.  It's certainly not worth buying a new one to upgrade over the old card.  If you're looking to upgrade, wait until you see what Vega offers.

RX 580 would be maybe 20% upgrade. RX 570 you're lucky if it's 5% upgrade.

Both would be abysmal speed increases considering their price. If you already have a working GTX 970 you should upgrade at least to GTX 1070. Something like GTX 1080 at 500$ would be even better upgrade.

But GTX 970 is a good card. You should be able to do just fine with it for now, maybe wait for GeForce 2xxx and think about upgrade then.

According to Tom's Hardware (whatever you may think of this site, they do seem to do reasonable reviews), the 580 performs in the same tier as a 980 but is not quite up to the performance of a 1070.  It is faster than a 480 and much faster than a 1060 in DX12, and a little faster than a 1060 in DX11.  Is it a better card than a 970?  Yes.  Is it a WHOLE LOT better?  Not really.  It is about 1.5 steps up from a 970, and Tom's Hardware does not recommend upgrading unless the card you want is 3 steps better than what you have.

They are still working on their test of the 570, so there was no review of that.  They expect it to be a little faster than a 480, and run a lot cooler with multi-monitor setups.

Their bottom line was that if you have a 1060 or better, or a 480, or a 970 or 980, there isn't enough gain to be worth the $$$.  Now if you have an older card, like a Radeon 7770 or a GTX660, then it is a really worthwhile investment.

I agree with Quizzical, wait for the Vega GPUs.  Even if you prefer Nvidia, their prices will drop sharply on 1070s and 1080s once AMD puts up some high end competition.  Me?  I'm waiting for a Fury II.  That will probably be the first video card I spend more than $300 on since I dropped 4 bills on a GeForce 2 back in the 90s.

The Radeon RX 570 is not going to be faster than an RX 480 unless something in the latter is completely broken.  The RX 480 has more compute units active and at a higher clock speed.  Some models of the RX 480 also have higher clocked memory and/or more of it.

AMD has already announced that the top end Vega card will be the Radeon RX Vega.  Because now AMD wants to name their cards after objects that are known for running extremely hot, apparently.  I suppose that they haven't announced that there won't be a Fury II.

If 4-8 fps is worth the 250, the 570 wont be any better the 580 will be a tiny bit better. The 580 was getting like 4-8 fps more than a 480, and a 970 gets slightly better than a 480. I had a 970, and a 390, which a 390 is the same thing as a 480, in terms of fps, and the 970 was slightly better.

The 480/8GB does about as good as a 970 in the places where a 970 shines and a lot better where it struggles (memory, dx12). The 580 for $230 isn't bad in that respect. It's a good build option just not a great upgrade option from a 970.

Think its a worthless option, a 480 is 100 dollars cheaper, and maxes everything at 1080, so if your doing 4k or 1440, you would be 100 times better off with a 1070, or 1080ti. There is no point for the 580 I can think of. It literally is utterly useless. The 4-8 fps more it gets over a 480 is all but useless in everything, because usually its way over 50. The 580 is not strong enough for 1440, 4k, or vr, so its useless there. The 1070 is 100 more dollars, and gets over 2x the fps. So yeah a worthless garbage card, that does jack, like the 480 over the 390, and the 390 over the 290, they are literally all the same cards, minus they use less power, but the power is so minuscule its not even worth talking about, were talking like pennies.

The 1060 is the better card, and its cheaper. So yeah the 580 is a useless card and a waste of money. Any one buying cards, would be better off with a 1060 a 570 or a 480.

where can you get a 480 for a hundred cheaper than the 580?

All you have to do is to find an RX 580 that is stupidly overpriced.  For example, this RX 580:

    https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814125964

is $110 cheaper than this one:

    https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814126192

Of course, the former RX 580 is also cheaper than the cheapest RX 480 on New Egg, at least if you ignore rebates.

Right now, 480 is a better deal than a 580, mostly because retailers will be clearing inventory and making room for the 580s.

I do agree, a 480 that's a lot less than a 580 (more than $30 or so) is a better deal, as the improved clock speed on the 5x0 is nice, but it doesn't make that much of a difference performance levels; i.e. it won't let you suddenly go up to dramatically improved settings, you'll just get a few more FPS out of the settings that a 480 was otherwise already capable of running.

In a few weeks/months, I think prices on the 580 will come down to about where the 480 was hovering at long term, as the 4x0 series won't be produced any longer and the 5x0 series is a drop-in replacement.

And then when Vega hits, or nVidia bumps to the 11xx generation, we may see prices shift a bit more.

    the rx480/580 are amazing at 1440p for the price. I currently have an rx480 8gb with a 1440p 144hz monitor and i run everything on high/max 50fps+

useless? hell no, sure its not a 1070/1080 but its also way cheaper.

I will buy it only if its Nvidia.

The shader issues AMD cards have in some games is a serious issue.
  • CleffyCleffy Member RarePosts: 6,414
Most of the shader issues are caused by nVidia Gimpware. They pay companies to use closed source shaders they program. You can hardly blame AMD to have shader issues when the game company was bribed into giving AMD shader issues.

Not really.  They most go blow for blow, a couple the 970 wins by a few percent, a couple the 580 by 10 or 15%.  IMO it's not even remotely worth the upgrade.

Just wait for a price drop and buy 1070 or 1080 I think those even use less power than your 970.
