Well is there any reason he could not if he so wanted too.
Again ... do YOU personally, honestly think he WOULD do that ? Based on all you know about Chris Roberts ?
I am not asking for possible reasons. I am asking about your skill in appraising people. Is Chris Roberts in your opinion the kind of person that would take the money and run ?

I mean it's not like he has a clean record, he has a history of abandoning projects and companies especially when he got into film. Wouldn't be the first or last time. Trusting anyone in this day in age would just be silly.

Yes.
I would say because has no money to run with, he is spending it all on having grown the company to the large-scale it is today, 5 offices and +450 employees, that doesn't cost air, it costs the millions they crowdfund.
(in proper terms many calculations even using numbers under the industry standards show it actually costs more than what they currently crowdfund per year.)

We are speaking about criminal behaviour here. "Taking the money and run."
My question would be, How the hell does him running off with any of the money make sense. He is already wealthy from all of his previous games and movies, so why jeopardize his entire fortune. Why make a pittance, when a plethora is the goal.
Unless you grew up with a person it's hard to say what they would do when they suddenly find hundreds of millions in their bank accounts. In general you do your homework and just hope for the best. I've studied a lot of confidence schemes because they're all over the place, so many in fact that they make TV shows which highlight several an episode and still have enough examples to keep the series running for years.
Like the guy who settled in a small town with wife and talked most of the town into investing their life savings on an investment project that would make everyone wealthy. One day he borrowed a boat. Later they found the boat with no signs of what had happen to the guy and his accounts had been cleaned out. Not even his wife knew what happened to him who couldn't even collect on his insurance policy because he was only declared missing, and not dead.
So he's gone and so is their money, leaving behind his wife. Lots of stories like that. It's why the golden rule is never loan, donate, or invest more then you can afford to lose.

And there it is, what CR did when he found himself with millions from backers, was not run with the money, he re-invested it on the project and let his ambition grow as the funding also did. And I'd say that nobody can deny.
He is clearly passionate about what he is doing, what achieving and delivering the best he can do, that doesn't ensure success, in fact, it only increases the risks being undertaken, but that is also the point of why SC captivates as much support as it did and does.
Those people who go around implying criminal behavior and intent are silly.
Yeah, I think he'd rather be known as the head of an international game company then be on some beach where nobody knows who he is.
"We all do the best we can based on life experience, point of view, and our ability to believe in ourselves." - Naropa "We don't see things as they are, we see them as we are." SR Covey
So 200 million dollars to raise a company from scratch and develop an engine, R&D, assets, vehicles, avatars, flying, fps, procedural gen for 2 ambitious AAA games, one of them being a mmorpg (the most complex and costly genre to develop) is nothing compared with the profits it can rack up on sales in the long term.
Yeah that whole "run with the money for some island" is not only dumb
but show's complete ignorance about game development business.
Cash shop to take your money works with no issues. The game, seen some demos. Big list of incomplete promised features. Innovation......yup, its others fault that they cant get their so called innovations working.
When you brag you are making the best game ever and take in as much money as they say they have you better believe they are going to be under a microscope. Specially when they have a history for making promises and not delivering. Its funny you think its not normal to question this situation.
Also, the fans that constantly ignore facts and defend everything also has contributed to the current SC situation.
Do you actually believe what you wrote? Or are you just being obtuse? I'm not defending anything. If you actually took the time to read anything, you would have seen that I quite openly stated that the project has pretty much been horribly managed throughout.
Are you saying that the game is not innovative? Please! Enlighten me how the feature set that is being proposed is in every game out there already. Again, one of the biggest problems facing gaming today isn't technology it's fucking retards. Seriously! I get it, you don't like the game, the company, the staff, and the list goes on. However, if you're unable to remove your head from your ass to make an accurate assessment of the product as it is proposed then, please, do the world a favor and just don't say anything because you just sound stupid.
Thank you, though, for proving my point about how the community is a factor preventing innovation in the industry. Congrats!
I don’t consider it innovative if they can’t get it working in the actual game. Anyone can come up with ideas that will innovate any industry but that doesn’t mean they are possible. My 4 year old would like people to have super powers, that’s innovating people but doesn’t mean my son is an innovator because he can’t pull that off
Agreed! However, even those who have played the alpha and are vocal opponents of the project have said it's one of the most beautiful games ever made. That alone is innovation. As for the rest of the features go, who fucking knows. High-concept, poor execution. I don't think that all innovations will be in the game, but I believe that there will be innovations that they introduce into the final product (if not already in there). They might not be great, they might not be efficient, but there will likely be something(s).
Beautiful doesn’t mean innovative unfortunately because anyone can make a beautiful game depending on the audience they are talking to. Okami might be thought of as beautiful by some but bleh by others.
It comes down to the features itself not the graphics. Look at games likes System Shock, Shenmue or Ico. The graphics in those games would most likely be considered sub par by many now a days but they helped shape the industry in one way or another. I doubt people will look back in 20 years and think about SC as something that really changed the industry unless it was to highlight the mismanagement of the game and what not to do.

He is going all in.
They seriously need 450 employees to make a MMO? Thats where your money is being wasted right there......If they ever hope to be profitable that will have t obe cut wayyyy down.
When you think about it, it's incredible all the things that have to come together just right to make an incredible game. I agree that having a lot of studios in different time zones would probably make it even harder. Each dev, each team have their own style and way of working, to hand that off to the next team to work on is bound to create some problems. Even with communications, you have questions but the studio that can answer them is asleep in that time zone.

As big a detractor as I am about Roberts, he's not going to take the money and run. Again, SC is too tied up in his highly inflated ego. Crash and burn is possible. Release of a greatly diminished game is probable. Selling out to someone else (if he sees a Crash and Burn coming), providing a convenient scapegoat, is possible. A slush fund with millions in it (just for contingencies, ya know) is possible.
But he enjoys all the pomp and circumstance, and the adulation of the 'little people' far too much to jump off the ride.....
If you are holding out for the perfect game, the only game you play will be the waiting one.
Here's how a list of the progress of SC promised stretch goals is kept within one objective and unbiased matter, the delivery of each stretch goal is a matter of fact, not opinions.
And guess what, maintained by the fans of SC. You talk that a list created by the fans would be "equality if not more biased", yet there it is, quite simple, X feature, if it is released it is, if it is not it's not.
While this list, even manipulates things that are released as undelivered, barely adds the delivered feature-set of past updates to the list and faults at the very core by listing items that are not confirmed features just because they were mentioned (over what @gervaise1 also brought up multiple lists of the same feature).
The great thing about this list is that it shows all these complex and complicated systems that CR and crew had NO Conception of how they'd implement. They were just trying to come up with stretch goals, as the money river was a'rollin'. Some things were easy adds, another small ship, a personal roomba butler, etc. No issue. But some were going to require really difficult feats to pull off. They had no clue how they were going to do it, but hey, all that money!
They're sure not going to release with a hundred systems. I may be in a retirement home before they actually get a hundred systems. They oversold. Because it's in their nature. Just like underdelivering.....

So much this. I rag on CR all the time and this game but he won’t cut and run. CR will stick around for as long as possible so that he can soak up all this attention before he either releases a broken mess or he pins the failure of the project on either Crytek, Derek Smart or his favourite that the technology just wasn’t there to achieve what we wanted
Got to love the haters hate-boner for Chris Roberts, a developer who's moto as been pushing tech and bringing highly ambitious and immersive games.
It's almost like they don't even play games anymore and just turned to e-hate hobbies to cope with some irl frustration.
For them no other developer or game changed it's scope, got delayed or had trouble achieving it's objectives... Its all rainbows & unicorns inthe rest of the game development business.. .
This alternate reality where Chris Roberts and CIG are the evil incarnated is sad and pathetic but somehow makes sense for some minds.
I wonder if that's the strange effects of following the development of something you hate for so long and so closely...
Maybe that's why companies usually only announce their games when their years into development already...

Or sells it to EA and stay on as creative director for awhile.

The list will never be completed because Chris has a money tree here, just keep adding new ideas and make even the smallest ideas sound incredibly challenging and will take a team of 200 many months to fulfill. What better business to own than have a bunch of dumb gamer's pay your wages and fill your bank account/s and there is no pressure and nobody to answer to,simply amazing,we all wish we could live in that Fantasy world.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.

You know this is a VERY real possibility,in fact i bet Chris has been hoping for a buyer since day 1,simply pitch a product, get interest ,show the ability to make a lot of money, yep i bet some investors have been asking. However there is obviously too much EASY money to be made here,so i am sure Chris is trying to sell while maintaining some sort of high end royalties, which then makes it a very tough sell.

I think that you underestimate CR's desire for control. See, this is the thing about ego-maniacs, they truly do want to deliver their vision because they desire that confirmation of their own greatness. It's one of the reasons that DS is so anti-SC, because SC basically tramples his own attempt to make something similar and stroke his own ego.
