On Style

ConsuetudoConsuetudo Member UncommonPosts: 191
I think I've finally discovered what it is for me: style. I think this factor is what makes most MMORPGs seem like utter trash to me. I was just researching Rift, Tera, Final Fantasy XIV, and Guild Wars 2, and I am repulsed by the style of them all. And I think this is why I quit these games. It doesn't feel awesome to me. If I reject the style, I just don't feel it. The way that the races look, the way the world looks, the way combat feels, the music playing, the way the cities look, the general game design. It's not really about mechanics for me or endgame (until I get there), for me I think those first impressions are the most important. I've tried so many MMOs but can barely get far in them at all due to my general repulsion at the fundamental style.

That's a starting point, but it's also important to figure out what style(s) you do like.
I want to help design and develop a PvE-focused, solo-friendly, sandpark MMO which combines crafting, monster hunting, and story.  So PM me if you are starting one.

Do any styles appeal to you?

I like the style of Warcraft, which is what keeps me coming back. I've also liked the styles of Age of Conan and also SWTOR, speaking from an art direction. Those games had sucky gameplay in the end though, and WoW is now stale.

What do you think of the style of Wildstar?  It has some elements in common with WoW, and some not.  Though Tera also has some elements in common with WoW and Wildstar, and you didn't like that one.

Age of Conan has some style elements in common with Vindictus and Elder Scrolls, IMO.

To each their own. I know a couple of people who are after with style either. I personally after with damage and power.

From what the OP has shared on likes and dislikes I'm going to recommend ESO.

I quit after 10 levels. It was one of the most boring experiences I've ever had tbh.

The main theme I'm detecting is you like western based MMOs and dislike asian MMOs. At least some of the games you listed as enjoying are cartoony, and some are not. And some of the games you listed as disliking are more realistic than cartoony, and some are not. But all the games you listed as disliking have slightly asian looking faces and skimpy stereotypical asian outfits for women, and none of the games you listed as liking do.

The good news is, most of the cooler games coming out over the next five years seem to be western. The bad news is that there are a few cool looking asian MMOs scattered in there too.

All of the games on my current watchlist are western and none of them have gameplay like WoW and SWTOR so I'll list them here:

Star Citizen, Crowfall, Chronicles of Elyria, and Life is Feudal.
