Here's more than my $0.02, answering a couple of the questions/points/issues brought up in this thread.

If anything can be believed ever, the game has been 100% funded from the start well over a year ago. It helps being a multimillionaire and making the game you want to make, beholden to no one. Given Blizzard killed Titan and Daybreak killed EveryQuest Next after years in development, nothing is believable 100% of the time in the gaming industry, regardless of the amount of money or size of your development team.

The total budget for Ashes is $30 million. That funded the game when the devs first began working on it. The budget is not $2.5 million or whatever the final stretch goal turns out to be for the campaign.

The Kickstarter was only provided because the community really wanted to help support the game and all KS goals and funding is for BONUS content/experience only available at launch. Also, the KS stretch goals are not expected to extend development timelines as they are more than tripling their entire staff counts and will add more staff as needed. They've also clearly stated that KS goals do not extend delivery date for the game.

Got to Kicktraq to see number of backers, average backing amounts, etc. It's not just one or two heavy hitters.

The game is well over 2 years out from launch and has been under development for over a year, which means 3.5+ years of development if the window doesn't slide. Current timeline is as follows:

Friends and family alpha: Q4 2017
    Kickstarter alpha: 2018
Game launch: "Prior to 2020", so possibly Q4 2019

There has been a lot of information provided about many of the game's mechanics (skills, PVP, classes, nodes, religion, housing, flying mounts, crafting, seasons, servers, etc.), especially for a game so early in development. Personally, I've been shocked at how much they've answered and how communicative they've been this early in the development cycle. Obviously many specifics aren't going to be provided as they're not even in alpha yet and - as you all know - once in alpha/closed betas, a lot of mechanics can change.

It's also a "thing" that communities are notorious for shredding devs who go back on promises, even if it was one line of an interview a year prior. So, I wouldn't blame them if they're hedging their bets a bit.

That said, there are Twitch livestreams every M/W/F at 3PM Pacific where they do Q&A sessions with different special guests each day. They also did a Q&A session "offline" with TheLazyPeon today that added several more details to a number of questions.

Everyone's entitled to their opinions. However, when folks just spout nonsense with completely uninformed viewpoints.... That's an entirely different thing. Hope this was informative.

Does anyone else think there should be a crowdfunding system that allows you to specify what systems you want to support instead of having them linked to monetary total targets? There are games I would have supported if the features I was interested in weren't so far up the stretch goal list. The companies would then get a very good idea of what people want exactly and if they decide not to move forward with a specific function it should be easy to get a refund if you wanted it.

I wish you had self-funded, built it and then launched :)

Speakin of which.   Would you be able to tell how much of the $30M proposed budget you have secured funding for? (in hand, not promised) and a rough estimate on percent completion of the game at this point?

It has to be %100, otherwise the stretch goals make no sense--kinda like buying a new stereo for a car you can't afford.

You shut your mouth! CU is a FUCKING GEM!!! Don't you DARE! say bad things about it! :pleased:

I don't pay very close attention to it, but has there been a beta yet? All I found was an article stating that it was delayed but it was "Certainly not 8 months. Right now, we are looking at weeks, in terms of the core ability code." That was in April of last year. I hadn't heard about the beta happening, but it obviously did because MJ wouldn't lie.

I was literally about to post this same thing, and if I recall they had a lot more funding privately.

According to the Massively site (Bree) that is not something that was confirmed.

IF the base product was 100% funded they would say so. They could still generate money (probably even easier as there would be more confidence) for extra features/customer buy in as they suggest, so there's no real reason not to.

My guess is they have potential funds if they cover/raise x amount (if they have any potential backers at all). Yet in order to raise funds, they need consumer confidence, hence the ambiguous nature of their budget rhetoric. Which seems to be KS 101's #1 lesson.

if they had 30mio funded why kickstart for peanuts and we all know mmorpg development takes at least 5 years anything less could be a disaster due qa and iron out game breaking bugs.

    my 2 cents

When base product is not funded, you are still getting funded for the base product. You can't get out of this by any explanations.

I'm not saying they should have it in cash. They can have a plan for it. But as long as they refund all the pledges if that plan didn't work out.

In all fairness, let's say they do have a 30m budget or means to secure it and after 2 years they would be able to secure 3m more from crowdfunding--which I believe,  they will do a lot more. That's 10% budget increase without losing any shares.

That ain't no peanuts. That's excellent business even without considering the rest of the benefits.

Im a little bit skeptical myself tbh, but back in the days when NcSoft announced GW2 i was also thinking "Well the game looks nice, but the concept ... mehh i dont think its that good"; well i played that game for 4 years...

I backed the game for a few bucks, ill back more if we get to see more information about the combat/crafting/dungeons ect.

Im laying my hopes into your hands Steven, dont disappoint us :)

The good thing with AoC is that they are building it on UE4... it would have been a task an order of magnitude harder, had they tried to develop their own inhouse engine. UE is proof that, at least on a technical level, this thing will work.
  • WizardryWizardry Member LegendaryPosts: 19,332
The ONLY good thing about licensing costs coming way down is ONLY the engine, the rest should be hand developed.
The more tools available it sure seems like LESS innovation,it is just encouraging real small devs trying to pretend to be game developers when they are NOT.
I have been around a very long time and have been interested in gaming engines and how they work for a very long time so for me it is real easy to instantly spot PROFESSIONAL work from some wannabe Indie developer. No marketplace or game engine is going to make a crappy studio look like a professional studio.

Most of these games look like bare bones games and yet sadly most people cannot see it.

I scoff at mmorpg for hyping up and building up these games that have VERY little to show or prove to us,they are acting on BLIND faith and WHY?Well obviously these games are not nearly as good as they pretend to be but use money to get others to endorse their products.

It is VERY simple, especially in this day n age,if your product is any good you would show case live video action, people would be testing it,we would see all the important selling points of a game but guess what we see,VERY little.
So until games like Crowfall and Ashes and COE actually have something to show me,they are nothing more than crappy Indie games trying to prove their worth with nothing but vague statements and promises and sellout website promoting their nothingness.

Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.

I agree that development phase is rather like loving someone from afar and when reality kicks-in, it can go downhill from there. But that doesn't mean every marriage should fail.

I don't agree with "will probably never be" part. The type of MMOs I like aren't being made anymore. First, one should be made and launched, then we can judge if nothing satisfies us anymore. How come I am satisfied with my singleplayer gaming more than ever? For instance, if The Repopulation had a $500m budget and launched, I'd be having no fucking complaints.

I don't think you'd get that answer. I don't think YOU think you'd get that answer. If you did I think that might cement Ashes as the most open development project ever, wouldn't you agree? I'd love to know too, but wouldn't expect @Ashes_Steven to respond to it, either. Especially since it does nothing except put a target on the project for negativity.

Not really, Star Citizen proudly proclaims their revenue progression, including monthly updates. (of course not nearly the same openness on spending)

Mark Jacobs confirmed (on these forums I think) of having $10M in available funding.

So some devs have been a bit more open about their finances, and even here he provided a reasonable budget to make his game and he has access to funding to cover this. (without actually providing details on who from or how)

He hasn't totally confirmed what is in the core build which makes KSing for additional features a bit awkward since you dont know what the baseline actually provides.

But with every stretch goal you know what isn't provided in the core delivery.

But like is always said, a good magician never reveals how he performs his tricks.

Actually he has discussed this in the last couple of streams as well, but don't let that stop you or anyone here who likes to play imaginary scenario stop with invented reality. This is why our national narrative is so screwed up. You don't have the time or inclination to find out what is really going on so you sort of make up the pieces as you go. Fortunately for you there are others here willing to make up "alt-facts" to feed your skeptic hobby.
Well since it has been made all so clear to you from watching the streams feel free to compile them into single, concise summary.

Now let's not be lazy here, you are the promoter, not me.

I'd do it myself, but heading out to do some cycling. ;)
