A Month Before E3 and What Do We Have? - Garrett Fuller at MMORPG.com

Over the years we at MMORPG have attended countless game shows. Every one of them is unique and has surprises that we try our hardest to share with fans. This year however, on the heels of a very strong PAX East we are entering the E3 territory and many of the big game reveals do not seem like they are on the horizon. How will E3 play out in a few months is anyone’s guess, but here are a few theories for you to consider.

E3 over the past several years has declined to nearly being irrelevant but to be fair the ocean I swim in might really be a lake up look like an ocean to me.

People expect too much from E3.  It's gotten to the point, that it's like the 2nd coming.... everyone hoping that this is the one that will save everything MMO.  The genre doesn't need saving IMO.  I just look forward to seeing some teasers to help keep the next year interesting.

I think that Devs being able to do everything and reach more people via streams and video is just making these sort of conferences irrelevant. But they're still fun to track as a gamer.

I am not sure about that actually. I say that because most of the other gaming conventions are larger in size which on its face suggests people are more interested in those. Then again, that result just could be because the public is not welcome to E3 (I think they changed that this year to be open to public?). One thing is for sure E3 is more about gaming media acting as is if everyone is on the edge of their seats wanting information but are people really I dont know, I suspect they are though, I am coming to the acceptance that yes...most people want mindless shotters

Xbox Scorpio will probably be revealed.  And hoping to see Destiny 2 gameplay.  E3 is more for single player games than mmos.

yeah and their console version suck balz I might add. The 7DTD for PC is light years more in content and playablity then the console version.

anyway...fair enough on what you said I just wanted to be clear for anyone who might read it as 'PCs are mostly focused on MMOs' which I know you didnt mean but I was wanting to set the record.

I tried consoles once, didnt like it. I always keep my eye out on that side of the industry a little bit but I have to be frank and I mean this in all seriousness. In the 37 years I have been gaming even when I was far younger then I am now I did not see much of anything in the console space that was remotely interesting to me.

E3 is about building marketing and trending topics for people who care about it. They show a CG trailer and people jump on their delusional faith they call hype - - while in PAX there are countless demos and hands-on tech to experience.

No doubts in why many companies are making their own press conf and skipping E3 stage altogether: The time of big gigs like Oscar and E3 are in the past... But some people refuse to move on.

I do not are if you take me seriously or not.

as for your impression of E3 its based on how it used to be 15 years ago, now its just a marketing loudmouth that I think most gamers ignore but I could be wrong on that second part

except all the games you say you play on PC are on console.  Generally less buggy and quite often with better player and critic reviews.  


I've noticed several times that the console ports tend to be more streamlined and much less buggy.  PC games may get a lot of content first, but they have many more issues, simply because by the time the patch rolls out to consoles, they've already been handled.

Everyone whines about how PC is better in this way or that, but console players don't care.  There are very very few games currently out that PC only players get that console players don't and many more console games out that PC players will never get that are worth playing.

above is an example of not having an understanding of PC first titles vs Console first titles 

and last time I checked Wurm Unlimited is not on console

and for the record at least for 7 days to die is CONSIDERABLY more buggy on console. The console version of 7DTD compared to the PC verison is very literally likely the worst multi-plat release that did consoles badly in the history of gaming

Last console I had was Xbox 360. I have no care for consoles. I will keep my eye on that side of the industry like the person above me said as well, but I can't full time game on a controller and much more prefer mouse and keyboard gaming.

I actually own 4 PS4 controllers because N64, SNES, and Dreamcast emulators are amazing on my computer and I can have all the benefits of a console with the added functionality of a PC.

I'm hoping that with the move of more recent consoles to the x86 architecture it will move developers to just release a game on all consoles and PCs because of a "why not"/"might as well" mentality.

I'd also like us all to play together on the same servers that way we don't have the issue of games shutting down because only 10,000 are playing on pc when there are another 20,000 playing on console. Instead be happy with 30,000 all playing together.

Thats just my take on it all.

oh and P.S. - I figured there was a ton of trolling happening when seeing the words, "real gamers" and "feel sorry for you" pc gamers.

You don't need to feel sorry for me because I'm not interested in consoles in the slightest.

my concern with what is called 'experience parity' which is the objective of making all games on PC/Console basically at the same time and work the same is that now one device has to succumb to the limitations of the other device.

To use an extreeme (not based in reality) example just to illustrate my concern its a bit like saying we want your AAA game experience to be the same on a cell phone. 
Well I think everyone knows that this is not a simple snap in place statement. There is a lot of depends on this.

When I was playing Darkfall I had about 100 spells/skills that I could get to in a micro-second with one figure because how the keyboad works, I dont want innovation of game play to be slowed down because a console controller is limited in such an example.

So I am not a fan of 'experience Parity' anymore than a person with a $10,000 stereo would be to be told his music will sound like an iPod

...7DTD isn't a good game, and has scored poorly across the board, not just on consoles.  Who cares about Wurm Online?  Very few.  They'd probably be smart to port to console if they expect to stick around. It's been out for a couple years now and it's struggling. 

Most new and upcoming games look to move to consoles... Even games like Divinity: Original Sin ended up on consoles, and no doubt the sequel will too.

Wurm would not work well as a console game, well for that matter either would 7 days to die.

those games that you are so excited about like Divinity Original Sin is a fucking PC game long before they even gave consoles a thought.
