Is RV over hyped because of it given free & free is subscription??

Mikey0114Mikey0114 Member Posts: 310

I am not trying to be a troll...but someone I know that many people prefer free games to buying and paying a monthly fee for a good game, which has really dedicated developers. Anyway I am really interested in this game after following up, but I can't shake the feeling that it could be overhyped, and I so I really would appreciat ppl telling me why they like it and not because its totally free.

Please note - I already know about the donation system! I hope the devs make it fair for those ppl who only want a little extra ingame money not a massive amount!

I can't lie, no monthly fee is a definite plus, but that's not the reason I like this game so much.
Really, it's the groundbreaking concepts. The crafting is awesome, the fighting should be intuitive (for a change) and interactive. OMG there will be so much to do in this game!
I could go on for hours, but you caught me while I am tired ::::03:: Someone else will come in behind me.

Well roma victor is not completely free you still have to purchase a copy or a cd key. Now if they have all the features theyve told us about then I believe its underhyped check out the state of the world in Roma victor's general forums for a good look. Now they could be poorly implemented or not even in but because of the NDA no one can give an answer to your question yet.::::37::

oh yeah it definitely is.....way way overhyped

  • DemsonDemson Member Posts: 23

It's under-hyped. Most game developers are dedicated... To the quotems of their publishers. Here you have a team of fanatics focussing on quality entirely. That is what developers should focus on after all, not quotems.

Graphics? Did you look at the faces? The buildings? The clothing or armour? Or will a disabled ground texture throw you off? 'Cause that is what all negative remarks on Roma Victor come down to... 'Bad graphics'.

The reason i like this game so much is because of its truely unique combat style in an MMO (apart from WW2O an planetside but they are shooters not melee).

Also i like the fact that the developers are so devoted to the project and their community, i mean the head admin even dropped in on these forums, usually companies have a spokesperson who talks on the forums but never actually visits a forum that isnt on their main website. RBL however dont have anyone controlling them so that means that they can do what they want and they dont have to do it to make a maximum profit like the big companies.

Also the crafting system and the wide wide range of skills you can do, aswell as the time period it is set in because ive always had an interest in the romans strategy of war although im not really someone who knows much about history apart from what i learnt at school.

The fact that it has no subscription is of very little consideration to me because even if this game had a 15 pound subscription fee or 20 dollars or whatever the american translation is, id still play it. And i will be one of the people who pays some money into the system, mainly so i can get ingame currency but also because i think its unfair that the game is free to play and the admins deserve a lot of people buying sesterces even though some people are strongly against this, i think it will work.

And may i also refer to the post knightnife made earlier in this thread that its really really overhyped... why the hell are you in these forums seeing how all ive seen you do is talk bad about the game?? If you dont like it, go away and leave us to talk about a game we do like please.

    Horney!

Well I myself find the Graphics Satisfactory...In other words they wouldn't throw me off...knowing that this is a low budget game!

But in truth thats not what puts me off, what puts me off (this is a guess ok) is that they never mentioned how the combat system wont be affected by lag. I know that it depends on your own skill to survive in this game, but what if server lag or (even worse) you occur with lag only, and find urself dead in the next few seconds. I mean how can you be sure you have enough time to block and parry when you see the hit comming too late. This game has to ensure that the lag will be very little and I doubt 56k players (excluding the local ppl) will be able to play this at all.

Thats the only thing that bothers me!

Woohooo im so syked and wishing to god i wont lag, but techincally i shouldnt because i have 512 kb broadband and i live in england, just half the country north of where the server will be situated (at least i think the server will be where redbedlam is, at least i hope). So the only thing that should let me down is my crappy PC with a slow graphics card, crap memory, slow processor an whatever else PCs have that make games run slow.

Reasons I am looking forward to RV:

    Setting

    Combat system

    destruction/construction

    no uber crap

    crafting system

    First person view

    Owning an NPC army/giant battles

Could become the emporer of the game/own the entire world

I don't really care about the no subscriptions because I used to have 3 UO accounts that are now closed so even with a subscription I would be spending less than then.

Your mind is like a parachute, it's only useful when it's open.
Don't forget, you can use the block function on trolls.

Well lag is my only worry...if this game is as tough as it is...lag could screw up everything and I am worried about Lag cause it is my main problem even though I have a 1024kb dl / 256k up ADSL connection...the problem is where I live - Malta

The internet is unstable as hell here because of the Monopoly a powerful company has over the internet here and so it is as crappy as hell :(

Yup Mikey, that is the big 'what if' in my opinion.

I am in Australia, usually get very good pings with EQ2, WoW, all that sort of stuff, but am wondering just how much lag, if any, I'll get with RV. How will the servers compare to a big game's servers etc...

I have always played the medic kind of role in whatever game I've played, and intend on doing the same thing with RV. More a backup than a primary warrior type approach. So lag may not be as huge a problem. But if I wanted to be the warrior who took down the Emporer and all 1,281 of his guards, it definitely would be.

Again, time will tell. We'll have no idea until we can try it out.

But am very sorry to hear about your net problems man :( Damn big business shyte...

RV's servers are hosted by Jolt which has a very good connection to just about everywhere.  In fact, there are Australian beta testers as KFR has mentioned that were added just to see how their pings are...and I'm happy to say they're doing just fine.  :)

Ok I played on Jolt servers :)  .... Very very very good servers...even American's have great pings on those... Ok I will think positively about the lag cause Jolt servers were my favourite servers to use for the game BFV before BF2 came out anyway.

Anyway I will see if I could get some ppl at my ISP to fix my ping...I got a lot of friends there so :P They will also hopefully get the internet gateway to prioritise some ports hopefully if I learn what the ports for Roma Victor.

Wooo! Thanks for that confirmation Kanoth :)

I didnt see anyone mention it... but RV is not going to be a free download... you will have to pay for the game either way- in the store, or purchasing a cd key.

Yeah sorry about that! ... Thing is many people address it as a free game and I understood that as its given away free (for download) and you don't have to pay to play - btw I intend on paying something each month as I have done for other MMORPGs - And yeah its for the ingame money too...I read about the crafting system - sounds expensive if you need to make something quick and sounds time consuming if I wanted to make something without spending a lot of money!

I prefer to go with the expensive way to craft :P

Paying monthly subs and for the game is hopefully a thing of the past, most games now only expect you to pay for one or the other. Guild Wars, City of Heroes, Lineage II etc...

It is under-hyped because if what they say is true it will be more like a role-playing game than anything that has gone before (ah a game without Elves thank ****).

They are not over hyping it and I am sure that once it is released it will do well on word of mouth.

Who cares about the graphics they are fine, I would take good gameplay over good graphics any day. Graphics are much, much easier to improve later.

Thank four asterisks? Um... I never knew that expression existed.

Anyway. Talking about the game really won't do anything other than make us realize how sad we are to be waiting for it. So, let's talk about something like... cheese. And how Kanoth would make a good lawyer. And how lawyer rhymes with Tom Sawyer. And how Tom Sawyer is a book written by Mark Twain. But that isn't Twain's real name. It has to do with oceans. Oceans are large. Large like giants. Giants were in the book BFG. BFG is the name of a gun in Doom. There is a Doom movie coming out. The movie has the Rock in it. The Rock is a wrestler, but now he's an actor. Actors are usually Democrats. Democrats are at war with the Republicans. Republicans are from outer space. Outerspace has black holes in it. "It" is a movie about a creepy clown. Clowns are scary. Scary like Scooby Doo. Scooby Doo had it's own movie. There are several movies on the internet. The internet contains MMORPG.com. On MMORPG.com, an account is called GeneralDoli. GeneralDoli said we should talk about something like cheese. And how Kanoth would make a good lawyer. And how lawyer rhymes with Tom Sawyer. Alright. Games don't get over hyped because they're free. Look at Runescape. Everyone LOATHES that game. Is it even -on- this webpage? No.

Worst game* Grammar and you 101

As for hype, the game's pvp looks promising, I could care less about graphics or price, if the game is good enough i'm more than willing to pay for it , as ive done for AC1 for the past 5 years, the question is wether or not this is going to take over as the main MMO of choice since I can play it and AC1 at the same time without the sub fee (which is nice but definately not a deciding factor).

The deciding factors to me will be:

    PvP: combat, balance
    Lag
Loot: good, generic or common boring "uber" items for each class

Looks good right now, I suppose the beta is really going to decide for me, one can only wait.

RV will require more than just the purchase of the game. It says right on the website that they expect MANY players to purchase in-game coin. The revenue system won't succeed unless this happens, and they say on their website that they will manipulate the ease at which one can earn in-game coin, based on the amount of coin that is purchased for real money.
Many of you will be paying more than a traditional $15 a month subscription rate fee.

I agree that there is a possibility that RB might end up screwing us by doing that. But then again, the US has a monkey with his finger on the nuke trigger, and nothing has happened so far.

I believe that RB means to use that as a means to counter inflation. You pay $10 a month, prices suddenly skyrocket ingame (think of gas prices lately), so RB counters it by giving you more Ses per $, thus granting you the same standard of living (yawn).

If you really despise the system, join the game and refuse to pay a single cent. It might be slightly (or very) difficult, but you'd be sticking it to the man (making an ass out of everyone that RB is indeed 'evil').

  • Mikey0114Mikey0114 Member Posts: 310

I don't know, doesn't sound like you included enough facts. RB made this new revenue system (VERM), to allow people to get their money's worth out of the game. Now I can see this revenue system only screwing the freeloaders!

My reason is that, Senators, Generals, Warloads or whatever, who ever is filled with political power, or military power, or trade power or even religious power, is definitley one of those people who donates. RB did also state in forums, that they intend to put a limit to how much we can earn of in-game money, so it doesn't become abused by the people who can afford to waste large amounts of money.

I predict that this system has a good chance of working, because anyone who wants to be a man with power in this game, and there will be!!....will need a lot of money, especially in the begining. The free loaders, will have an incredibly tough time trying to keep up with those earning in-game money by donating, who probably can afford to start their business or get good armour and do great deeds in the legions or whatever. Money is power in this game, but the in-game money that is rewarded for donating is not enough to give you power, but enough to aid you in getting that money which is equal to power.

I also predict that many people who are like myself, really into the setting during The Roman  Empire will be donators. And there are 100s of people like me in the forums, just for you to be aware.

I would gladly pay a subscription for this game,  based on what I've seen so far.
  • JorevJorev Member Posts: 1,500

A $15 a month subscription fee would be fair and the keep the playing field level, but Redbedlam's plan is to average more than that per player. Very few players will pay nothing per month, while most will pay at least $15 a month, but many will feel the need to pay much more.
