UPDATE: Despite the press announcement calling it an "RPG", it is confirmed that MtG is going to be an MMO. Perfect World Entertainment and Cryptic Studios are going to twitterpate a lot of people today with their collective announcement that Magic: The Gathering MMO is indeed in development. The game is considered a "AAA MMO" being developed from the ground up for both PC and consoles.

Just FYI, we're seeking clarification, because while the PR says "RPG", Venture Beat is reporting it's an MMO. I hope so!

RPG with cards or without (I hope), that is the question.

Cool. But Cryptic? This means Free to Play with gambling boxes up the wazoo. Log into Star Trek Online for a glimpse. Such a shame...

Yes, and a MMO is likely since Cryptic is MMO focused but I wish someone else would develop it. Cryptic tend to rush their games so much that they loose a lot of the potential and PWE is one of those companies that put more effort into looks then gameplay. I rather had NC Soft or Square Enix making it (or Blizzard for that matter).

Still, a Magic MMO could be very fun. Played Magic on and off since 1994 myself. :) I hope they use Dominica or Kamigava for it and not one of the more doubtful worlds or Planechase. Magic have made a few too many worlds and some would be weird for a MMO.

Official website says it is an MMORPG.

"Cryptic Studios is developing a new free-to-play, action MMORPG based on Magic: The Gathering, the acclaimed strategic card game.

Experience stunning visuals and sound as we bring Magic to life in this next generation MMORPG. As a Planeswalker, you explore amazing worlds, combat powerful creatures, and meet the legendary beings that shape the fate of the multiverse."

If done well, I think MtG as MMO could be quite good. I figure it'll be something like Pokemon, where your character walks around with cards that can be used to summon mobs to support you, you can buff yourself and/or party and debuff your opponents. I'd be totally hyped for a game like this, sadly though Cryptic is developing it and PWI will be publishing, so goodbye nice dreams and RIP an other IP in MMO form :(

I can't afford "Free to Play" ;/ Is this going to be a card-style game? Or are we talking about a full-blown classic MMO with playable characters etc?

Neverwinter reskinned is all I am going to see. It'll probably be out by years end.

MtG, like Dungeons & Dragons, is an IP that I find criminally under-utilized in the PC gaming space so I am cautiously looking forward to it.

I am still waiting for D&D to make a top-notch virtual tabletop application. I think it would break the internet if done correctly.

A pack of cards: the original lockbox.

There's a reason why Cryptic Studios, Perfect World Entertainment, and Wizards of the Coast (video game-wise) never really took off.  Style over substance and whatever substance that exists is replaced with some form of gambling.

Playable characters, I'm pretty sure going by how WoTC announcement about their in-house game studio last January said this: "What would it be like to throw fireballs as a Planeswalker in an MMO?"

That also means there is a VR D&D game in the making somewhere...

I'd say it will be pretty underwhelming and more cash shop cancer where you buy that fireball as a microtransaction along with everything else.

    Oh boy.

This game already exists.  It's called Hex: Shards of Fate.

Tabletop simulator can actually be very well used as a virtual DnD tabletop simulator. Tabletop Simulator provides figures, dice and even a virtual tablet with a browser, so you can load you char sheet on it (Steam workshop support, so some might need to be downloaded). Maybe that DnD Beyond app might supplement this, making the experience completely virtual.

Just to make this ontopic ;)

I believe Tabletop simulator also has MTC decks. So you could play that as well.

Are you sure the game is not titled, "Wallet: The Reckoning"?

Lost me at f2p, guess I'm not their target demographic. Guess it could be worse, at least the word Trion doesn't show up anywhere.

Man, I'm so excited!!! MagicTG MMO! I can't wait so PWE and Cryptic will ruin it completely!
I'm both excited and terrified. xD

I mean... I enjoyed playing NWO, despite the cash shop being shoved in my face at every turn I took... so the base game likely won't be BAD... but yeah... the gambling boxes... the constant letting exploiters get away with their exploits... =/

I loved MtG and will give this a chance.

Wizards, please don't monitize this like Neverwinter! You need to find a better balance like GW2 to make money without scaring people off!!

Great, I get to see Cryptic ruin yet another IP. Obviously WotC did absolutely no research on who to hire for developing this game, because they could not have chosen a worse studio.

It will be just as good as STO and Neverwinter !

Just as good for PWE's revenue stream, I mean.

Can't fault PWE on this one, they certainly know how to buy the money-spinning IP's...
