Ever stopped playing a fun game?

ConstantineMerusConstantineMerus Member EpicPosts: 3,338

Another discussion made me wonder, have you guys ever stopped playing a game while it was very fun and you were enjoying it a lot and not due to lack of time?

I can think of few reasons on the top of my head, but I am looking for actual experiences, games and whys. To yours truly, that has never happened.

The only time I've stopped playing a game I really loved was because new games came out, or went on sale, that I really wanted to try.  If they were decent or good, I added them to the list of games I rotate through on a regular basis.

It's been happening to me almost with every RPG i play in the last few years. RPG (specially JRPG) is my favorite genre. I have enough time to play them, but they are so lengthy and i have so many games i need to finish that i've become extremely indecisive.

Also, I'm a two times cancer survivor, and the mentality of "i don't know how long i'll live" makes me really anxious so i tend to switch games even if i'm having a good time to try and cover many games. I then resume the previous game weeks later, sometimes months later.

I thought I had a lot of games with a little over 300 on Steam and more through other services.  Then I saw people on Steam who had well over a thousand.

Yeah over the last 3-4 months or so I've been working on a cartoon, so I'm constantly starting games and leaving them unfinished,  since I'm usually pressed for time to work on my project. I only play games when I need a change of pace from the work it takes to animate scenes. I guess you could say I use them to relax my mind. Problem is I usually forget what I was up to in the games, so I just start another instead.

Those games have been The Witcher 3, Mass Effect: Andromeda, Tyranny as well as a few others like Tyranny.

I juggle all the time, especially single player games. What I meant was to quit altogether, if I wasn't clear before! :)

Once I started an RPG, played it for about 10 mins. Didn't like it and so left it alone, for over a year.  I tried it again and was addicted to it until I finished it.

Never completely quit playing a game I loved unless the Devs made some major changes that killed the game for me.  It's never a sudden thing just little changes over time that I don't like but tolerate until all the fun feels like it been sucked out of the game.

Yes. Something more fun came out. So i guess it is a lack of time .. that i have better entertainment options.

The games I really liked that I stopped playing was pretty much due draining me out, this pretty much in MMO's.

Games that give you objects to do until the end of your life, and even if you do love the game it will eventually drain you and you'll look for something else.

When I was a kid I remember being quite put out when I started a game on my cousin's console and couldn't continue it after going home because I didn't own that console.  More recently I've had games where an update broke the game for my particular phone type so I couldn't keep playing.

I guess there have also been free trials that were sort of fun but not fun enough for me to buy the game and keep playing; not sure if that counts as "having fun".
I want to help design and develop a PvE-focused, solo-friendly, sandpark MMO which combines crafting, monster hunting, and story.  So PM me if you are starting one.

Oh that sounds like an awesome project. I was a fellow animator, but gave that up long ago when I realized I prefer to write and have more talented people animate it! :) Although main business has barred me to really pursue that dream, but recently I have put more time in it and I think I'd get somewhere with that soon. Anyways, goodluck, I'd love to see some stuff when you are ready to show! ;)

WP on beating that beast, twice! I wish you the best for not having to deal with it ever again. I understand what you mean. I once had a near-death experience, well sorta. My friend was driving 100mph and I he set me on fire, literally. Well I burned for a couple of minutes and for about 30 seconds or so I had completely given up and accepted that's how I was going to die. After surviving that, I sorta had the same feeling. I realized how easy it is to die, over nothing. So I kept hopping around, doing different stuff, never finishing anything. I started to write like 8 different novels and couldn't finish any of them, thinking I should do that other story first in case if I died. Even I changed my major a few times, my job a dozen.

I remained in that stage for like 10 years, until I realized I'd rather die whilst practicing patience and tranquility and give the things I enjoy in life my full focus instead of always worrying about what else might matters more.

Hope that ain't the case with ya! :)

Yes - all the games I've stopped playing were fun at first.

When I stopped however - I used up all the fun and it was time to move on to the next one.

I never stopped playing a game where I was still having fun.
Yep, I am exactly the same. Besides the actual fun factor, nothing else has ever ruined a game for me. Not the P2W cash-shop, or devs being rude, or whatever other reasons.

Warcraft 3 when it first came out.  I played it pretty much for a week non stop at release and was 90-0 on their ladder system.  After that first week I thought, what am I doing, I need to focus on work because I'll never make money playing video games...

I stopped playing EQ1 because by the time I logged in, found a group, traveled to where we were going, waited on the others to travel, put the group back together a few times when people dropped, etc., all my play time for the evening was gone. Loved the game itself though.

EQ1, EQ2, SWG, SWTOR, GW, GW2 CoH, CoV, FFXI, WoW, CO, War,TSW and a slew of free trials and beta tests

I have yes...and only because I wanted a break and another game grabbed my attention and before you know it a month has passed.
I would like to point out that this used to never happen in the past but in the past 3 years I basically can not keep up with the compelling game content I have been exposed to

Usually I become distracted by something else, and then I forget what I was doing in the game so I just stop playing.

Usually only if I have been burnt on a certain genre.  I did that with Endless Legends. I had just finished playing Age of Wonders 3 and Civ V so I was not really feeling the 4X genre at the time I went to play it. Even though I was having fun I wanted to focus on another genre for awhile and come back fresh to that type of game.
Once I came back to it I loved it and once again was having fun.
I was actively gaming with the first Age of...series came out and I did play them but I have to say, I always felt Empire Earth was better.

This is what happens to me constantly, What really sucks is when i leave a mmo i am having a great time in, for another new mmo or game release and then try to come back months or even years later. I always end up feeling either too lost or the magic is completely gone .

It seems "having so much fun all around" is the top reason for people stop playing a game. Where are all them doomsayers now?

I can think of few reasons on the top of my head, but I am looking for actual experiences, games and whys. To yours truly, that has never happened.
    Two main reasons:

    1) My mood has changed

This is the biggest reason for stopping playing games that are fun. My mood simply changes. For example, I recently got the urge to play racing games again. I started playing Grid Autosport - not the best racer, but one I spent a long time playing and enjoy. Put 3 hours into it one evening, went to bed. Next day.....urge to race had gone.

Same with most games. I get the urge to play something specific, I satisfy that urge and then move on. For this reason, I try to keep a fairly well balanced library of single player games so that I can hop regularly.

    2) Too much time has passed

Some games require you to invest a lot of time before the magic and fun comes out. The Deus Ex games are good examples - they're pretty boring to start with, but once you get stuck in the story and get to enjoy the upgrades, they become quite addictive.

However, circumstances (or mood changes..) will often mean I can go a week or two between game sessions - long enough to break the habit and forget key parts. It means that going back to these games will require a significant time investment before getting back to the fun. That often puts me off.

Games with lengthy strategies are prime suspects for this. A recent example of this for me is Cities: Skylines. Whenever I start a new map, I usually spend some time coming up with ideas for my general city layout. I will often restart 2 or 3 times in the first few hours as I update my plans, but eventually I'll come up with a long-term vision that will take me 20-30 hours to implement. If, during the construction of my city, I take a week or two off from the game, I will often forget my initial vision. This means coming back to the city, I don't feel connected to it any more, I can't remember my vision and thus lose motivation.

Most games I've played have been fun, primarily because I do a fair bit of research and comparison before spending money on something.

However, I quit games if I find the 'BS to Fun' factor is too high. So if I spend too much time doing things I don't like (such as wasting time or dealing with frustrating mechanics), I'll quit.

Unfortunately, not many video game have managed to keep my interest over the years. GW2 is a good example of a game I could have played for a long time, but the bugs, balance and class issues frustrated me to no end.
