Loved the larger group sizes in DAoC and wish other games had kept them.   LOOOOONG way to go with this game, but good choice on the group size.   There are already enough small group/solo "MMORPGs" out there.

One thing I never understood about why many mmorpgs never did (except FFXI later on sorta) is why not have open world content and instanced content need each other. For example, FFXI had the seal system, where you'd get seals of varying types which gave you access to instanced battles pretty much which in turn gave something exclusive to that particular instanced battle. There was also a chance that certain instanced battles could give you an item to do another instanced battle which required more people (i.e. cloud evoker to do ouryu). Later on, they made it so you could do certain instanced battles to get an item and pop one of the more rare elites (trying to use words some people might understand who've never played FFXI, but HNMs in this case) so you could counter the whole waiting around for hours until stuff popped system. The thing that I like about systems like these is allows groups to organize things in advance and give more control to the player about what they want to do. So people can collect pops in advance and just spam until they run out or whatever. The collection aspect becomes important because it makes other aspects of the game important. I personally dont count WoW's mythic+ system as something similar since you're ultimately doing the same thing just scaled up each time and never really expanding into needing more people for bigger tougher fights.

I play solo 99% of the time. Forced grouping forces me not to buy this game

Ok so go play single players games stop trying to get single player mmorpg's, i'll never understand people like, "i hate being on the road but i wanna drive a car", "I only play solo but i insist on playing online games who are designed to be played in groups!"

GO PLAY SOLO GAMES AND HAVE FUN.

Forced grouping combat is one of the worst ways to have social gameplay. Most people like to enjoy combat and not have to wait on others or be forced to deal with assholes or being unwanted classes. UO/SWG were probably the most social games because thr interdepency was based on community not combat.

But there are ALREADY hundreds of games (literally) that allow you to go solo your MMORPG or small group it.   Heck,  most around here know that I am not a fan of this developer, but creating a game that allows real grouping FOR THOSE THAT WANT IT..... is a damn good thing.

Not every game needs to be for every player.  Thats the trap so many games have fallen into.  You want to play an MMORPG where you can solo the content... go enjoy one of those games.

DAoC was my favorite game... and those guys that I grouped with back on Palomides are the same guys I play with today.  DAoC had a similar group system.

let's admit it; combat will make or break any MMO (or any game with combat, for that matter). Combat and animations. If these are good, people are willing to put up with naive or simplistic game design for much longer...

Funny thing about DAOC, while I did level a few characters via grouping,  I also learned which classes could not only solo to 50, but could also be used to powerlevel others in a multibox configuration.

Over the many years I mostly soloed on almost every character up to level 40 when the leveling curve really started to kick in and grouping became more attractive, but it was never mandatory.

Only game I  played back in the day with truly forced grouping was DDO when it first launched, and I quickly quit playing as I wasn't interested.

I still support games where grouping is the more optimal path and is rewarded accordingly, but I also look for some soloing activities for when I just feel like playing alone.

Each time I read these sort of speeches, I always feel like it's devs saying exactly what people want to hear. Either way, it sounds cool.

Most MMORPG have no interdependency in any way outside of end game.  You can have solo combat but have places that require groups.  SWTOR did this to a very small degree.

I would love to see a open world have multiple paths of challenge for a vertical progression game.  Solo you get worst loot to small group 4 man to 8 man getting the best loot.  It's a lot of content to make though unless you just instances of the same content just harder.

I just think you have a better community when combat, combat support, and crafting are interdependent than forced combat grouping.  There is a lot less pressure and competition.  You can also still have elite areas that require groups as mentioned before but it would be for those into it.

Best community I ever played with was DAOC which had 8 man groups.
