Middle Earth: Shadow of War is one of the most highly anticipated sequels of the year. And there’s a good reason why. The orignal mixed with the stealth action of the Assassin’s Creed series with the combat system of the Batman Arkham titles and slapped a healthy heap of Tolkien lore all over the thing. But now it has to live up to the expectations of its predecessor.

Personally, I found the predecessor quickly became a repetitive slog through a bland, boring world. Everything was brown and red and rather uninteresting, and the "difficulty" was essentially just cheese, with hordes of enemies overrunning you regardless of where you turned. I understand that the LOTR name draws in plenty of fans and money but thought they could have done much better than button-mashing and running away from 8 out of 10 fights.

    huh ...

While I think the world was a bit bland (it felt very constructed to support the jumping/climbing, whatever) it's that being surrounded by enemies that was the fun part.

Most of the time I wouldn't play the quests/missions and just find a fortress to harass. To me that was the meat of the game play.

I don't think that's "cheese" at all but rather a bit requiring you to be aware of what's around you all the time, realizing you needed to alter your position.

I'd go so far as to say we need more of this as the tiring part is going up against one opponent, one opponent, 3 opponents, two opponents. There is no excitement in that unless they are really tricked out such as a Dark Souls type boss.

Mostly I wander around in stealth killing orcs, bosses, and wreaking mayhem on them. I'll do quests or objectives that seem interesting as I wander through zones, or when I hit a wall where I need them to unlock skills. It can be as dangerous, or not, as I want it to be.

The world could be a lot more interesting though. Your summary is spot on.

sounds to me like you and I play it the same.

I"ll add that I try not to run away from fights like the OP suggests but stay and push myself. If I really become overrun I'll scamper up a wall and come down on the other side of the fight so I have a better vantage. That to me is the fun part and the challenge. How long can I keep the fight going as "non-stop" as possible.

Yeah attacking forts and getting a mob of orcs chasing you around it was fun and then got even more fun when the styalized badass orc came out with his entourage and theme music chant. I hope the theme chants for them continue in SoW.

I had a blast just sneaking around and causing shit. You could completed many objectives without combat as long as you were careful and patient.

I can't be excited for this game at full price, I might pick it up when it goes on sale but the presents of micro transactions in a singleplayer game turn me off completely.
