But if you play like Sovrath (and I) play, just do whatever and play the game on your own terms (like he said)...the game is actually pretty fun.
And I think that's the thing, for those who "hate/dislike" the game because of the gameplay, they buy into the idea that "you have to do it this way".
Now granted, the way I play requires a bit more patience but most of my gear is Tet and I enchanted none of it.
The highest I enchanted a piece of gear was Tri and I decided after that I was out. The game is unplayable for me if I have to do that. So I sell everything, save my money and buy it off the market.
The slow acquisition of power, for this game, is fine for me.
This is how I play too. Enchanting gear is a pain in the ass and I for one am looking forward to the enchanting re-work. This game is a love/hate relationship for me. I love the gameplay and the world, and the freedom to do what I want when I want, but the RNG makes it painful sometimes. Instead of treating this game like a job, I just enjoy my time with it and put it down and play something else, or real life commitments.
Enjoy the game for what it is and you will go far in the game. I personally can't play games like WoW or EQ anymore. People think the grind in BDO is bad, who remembers hell levels in EQ?
I was into Asheron's Call at the time, not EQ. But wow was leveling in AC slow! especially once you got higher into the level cap (level cap was super high in AC)...to get a high level in AC took me over 3 years of playing rofl. But it could have been since I was younger and it was my first MMO so I didn't play it "optimally", but it still took way longer to level (at least when I played) than modern MMOs take.
Ugh I really miss AC1. I too played that and I forgot just how long it could take if you didn't have the proper buffs/gear.

yeah. And the GM events were amazing. The Bael'zharon event is still by far the most memorable event I've been a part of, probably tied there with the WOTLK pre-release event. And always loved Olthoi as far as alien/fantasy species go.
Really looking forward to the coming BDO update though. I know a lot of people want a new class, but I'm personally happy with the Dark Knight myself. Plus in BDO (like most MMOs) its better to NOT play a new class cause its always OP, overplayed and gets nerfed a lot.
I know a lot of people want the Mystic though, and I'll probably play one when that is out...months after its out :P If I do make one, it only be for all the freebies they are likely to have with it like they did the Dark Knight lol...at least assuming they do the same and give gifts to new Mystics (or whatever the new class ends up being)

I've really been enjoying my Striker. Mystic seems more utility rather than damage.
So... I have been playing this game for a while and I don't really know how to feel about it. At first it was amazing, a great experience. I never felt tied to one place, I could go pretty much wherever I wanted and still could progress my character, even if not optimally.
Fishing is nice, building your empire with workers/node mini-game is something that I enjoy. Graphics are beautiful, character creation is great (gender lock aside), environment design could be better, lore seems pretty good, main story is garbo.
I'm used to very grindy, korean games. I have played Ragnarok Online for years, but the grind in BDO is weird, it never ever ends. On one hand it is good, you always have something to do, on the other hand you feel you are falling behind if you stop grinding and I was not even planning to be 1%, just wanted full TRI and maybe a TET or two pieces of gear. it's so grindy that it made me miss weekly lockouts from some themepark MMOs. Some BDO mechanics are designed to mimic mobile games, the energy points and some lifeskills for example, designed to make you addicted. One of the worst parts of BDO is how it encourages you to keep your PC and BDO active literally 24/7 for fishing/other activities and dare I say, very suspicious that my CPU usage is very high regardless of context. High in max settings, high in lowest settings looking at the floor.
Combat is amazing, but ultimately pointless for me, didn't enjoy the PvP (lots of desync issues, etc...) and everyone already know about BDO's PvE... so I was grinding to get better at grinding, nothing else.
I don't regret playing it, but I'm slowly quitting. I would recommend everyone to try it until softcap (or close to it) at least once, since BDO's mechanics/systems are kind of unique compared to most popular MMOs.
I'm one of those people who updates the game still, gets on, see what's up then logs off. The fact that I have to pay to repair my items the best way than just doing the traditional repair turned me off. Got all my stuff to TET but sometimes, I feel ambitious and would want to try for PEN but right before I feel like doing some PEN attempts, i'm already logged off. So yeah..
I keep seeing videos of this game and reminisce about the stellar graphics and fluid action combat...so i update the game. And then after a few hours getting my bearings in the game again. The shiny finish starts to fade away as the grind rears its ugly head.
Perhaps the fact none of my small group of gaming friends plays has a hand in my inability to play this. But the cash-shop gouging on a b2p title and other issues also were the main reason i turned away from this title. If someone that plays this consistently could waylay or confirm anything about the state of the game compared to release. I'd appreciate it.
The game is jam-packed... not sure why the cash shop is a put-off if you're not buying anything from it?
The world is gorgeous and there's literally too much to do.
The problem with most players is they're trying to play it like every other MMO - that's wrong so don't.

"Cash shop gouging" would imply that the game's a pain in the butt somewhere without using the cash shop.
In BDO's case, one particularly infamous example I keep hearing is playing the game without pets.
So "not buying anything from it" but how much a pain it is to play without pets would probably be quite "off-putting" I imagine, for example.

That is a point of contention. But when I last actually played. World Bosses would one-shot even the sturdy classes. And it was a DPS race to place high enough to qualify for drops. So you were pigeon-holed into stacking Elion's Tears from cash shop to instant res and continue the fight. Over...and over...and over. I found myself having blown through $10 in Elion's Tears for a single world boss and didn't get anything. That was the last straw that broke the camels back.
The other issue I had was that with the grind and RNG factors with acquiring gear and enchanting. Those that blow the $70+ on cash shop vanities that increase your chances with RNG become a necessity for progression (unless you're a masochist).

I play since day one and I don't see myself stopping anytime soon. The game has been continuously improved over the last year and a half, but what I think you have a problem with is structuring your gameplay by yourself. You need to take into account that this game aims to allow for a Second Life-ish-role-playing-world, while being a management sim, on top of being an MMO, and on top of that being a fully-fledged action game...
The amount of mechanics implemented in BDO borders on a total clusterfuck, but if you just explore at your own pace and actually pay attention to how the whole thing comes together it will at a certain point make perfect sense. The grind is purely optional and you only need to do it if you want to compete at the highest levels of guild PvP, or stick strictly to the PvP server.
Sure - it's always better to play with friends, but at this point there are so many players that I'm certain you'll find a like-minded guild in no time
The best way I can describe my play style is "hardcore casual."
I put in a lot of time (especially being unemployed atm) but I don't strive for the upper echelons of players in a game. I keep a foot in the pool (casual play) and a foot in the hot tub (hardcore). Thus, I often find myself bored with not raiding or PvPing. But frustrated, annoyed, and sometimes pissed if I spend too much time doing so. That's part of why I've had issues beyond those I've mentioned (cash shop and friends). As you pointed out. The game allows for both and rewards people based on their play style. But for people like myself it seemed like there was no incentive. I play too much to appreciate the minor daily rewards. And I don't play hardcore enough to justify the cash shop spending and hours spent grinding.
