Something to play casually?

Hi I used to play mmorpgs pretty much only for pvp  and I've always been a bit of a "rush to endgame to be competitive" kind of player. I've played UO a lot and afterwards jumped through different things like DAOC, L2, I tried ESO (didn't like it) and played GW2 vanilla for a long time(WvW only).

Now I don't have much time to play anymore and I don't care too much about being at the top of things. I mean, I'd like to but I can't see any games out there that let you be competitive in pvp without spending a lot of time reaching for gear/levels/whatevs.
All I want is pretty much throw some fireballs and play with people, even PvE/dungeons are fine.

So what I'm looking for is just a half decent mmorpg to put some time in. Possibly fantasy setting, not too much grinding with battlegrounds/decent pvp a big plus. Character customization is also appreciated.

By now i'm downloading the FFXIV client (I tried it time ago and liked it despite it's very different from what i'm used to) but I'm not seeing myself paying for a sub and I wouldn't mind something else. I do like the dungeons/party gameplay though.

I also keep seeing ads on steam about TERA and WILDSTAR which make me curious. A friend of mine is playing BDO which is affordable but it looks like something I'd solo grind to be able to pvp and I'm not sure I'm committed enough.

Even eastern MMORPGs are welcome as long as they're decent, I'd like something were I can either get into pvp soon enough or something that lets me group up with other people easily without guilds and all that.

Any advice?

(Crowfall looks like something I'd try when it comes out)

Can't think of too many MMORPGs where you aren't required to "pay your dues" in time and these days in cash in some cases in order to be competitive in PVP.

Strangely enough EVE is one in which you can, but most don't see it that way.

FFXIV is a good PVE choice since you've discounted two of the other big players, ESO and GW2.

Not interested in MOBAs or MinMOs like Destiny 2? They get you into PVP right away.

Play Overwatch. It's not an mmorpg, but it sure scratched my limited time mmorpg itch.

I'm playing gigantic atm and I've played some battlerite. I don't mind MOBAs but now i'd like something with a bit of progression.
I don't mind if it's something that takes long to get to endgame if the journey is fun I'm probably going to drop it in a few months or so

What's up with wildstar and tera? aion? Is any of those worth a try?
