I don't think you get the point. Most people aren't leaving over the patch they are leaving because every time an update comes there is a substantial nerph that comes with it. People get tired of their characters abilities changing all the time on someone elses whim and having to try and rebalance their characters.
Originally posted by Somnulus I've never seen an MMORPG evolve backwards before; certainly they all take big hits when the developers start feeling the need to start tinkering with things better left alone, but I've never seen a game release nearly trouble free, with unique character creation, dynamic action, goal-oriented play, great graphics and a truly unique playstyle and start changing everything to INCREASE the amount of tedium during play.
Stop using the term Mass Exodus, its retarded and its unrealistic, so you don't like the game, big deal. Move on. Seriously. I hate Star Wars Galaxies, but I don't start stupid worthless meaningless pointless campaigns to try to over dramatize my own hatred for it. Nobodies listens, nothing substantial happens and the developers of game-in-question don't care and nothing changes. Find something else to focus your life on.
I honestly don't know if there will be a mass exodus of not. If the devs have done a good job we'll all try it, see that it's more fun, and keep playing. If they have nerfed the hell out of half the builds in the game for no good reason, we'll leave in droves. Time will tell.
I don't want to write this, and you don't want to read it. But now it's too late for both of us.

One of the reasons for these forums is to give one's ideas about a game for people to read who are thinking about buying a game. That means both sides have a right and obligation to present their opinion about the game. While you may disagrre with the term "mass exodus" there have been many long term players who have left the game and a reasonable chance that even more will when the update goes live. The updates are suppose to refreash the commuinity and while it does for some of the newer players it often scares older players away who are feed up with poorly done "balance" changes. Just because you don't like people posting negative aspects about the game give you no moral superiorty over people who do want to vent and warn others considerning purchasing the game.
While I disagree with the perceived "Mass Exodus" I do agree that a drastic change can make people feel unsettled. Myself and people in my SG have not expressed any concerns about theupdate and we will not be leaving. There are even some posts that indicate people in my SG welcome the challenge.
Forums are an interesting media. The loudest, dissatified voice gets a lot of attention, but only comprises of a small portion of the people who actually play the game. The CoH boards represent 5% of the gaming population. Most do not even go on the test server and only spout out what they perceive as a "destruction of their game". Those who do not post are usually satisfied or don't feel that the update will ruin their gaming experience. Those who are dissatisfied post often and thus it seems like that is all that's being discussed.
your arguement is so persuasive, so filled with knowledge and insight. You back up your argument very articulately, with suggestions of improvements and raising examples to glorify your position....oh wait, you didn't
Basically, the mass of people that do play the game do NOT go and post on the Forums. Only something like 5-10% post the forums. What you see there is people with a great desire to make their opinions heard mostly, I suspect, because they like the game so much. If that has changed, then viola'... you get blasts against it. I knock anyone for that, but for those reading these forums here just take into consideration what the poster is telling you. Are they mad because changes p.o.'d someone and they're mad? Well... that is not really a good justification to disuade someone from trying it.
CoH introduced something this last change, called Suppression. It makes you pause after you attack when once upon a time you would not. Movement was fluid. I wrote and complained for weeks about that but I also never threatened to leave. I was angry enough to, but when I considered that for some people the game was way to easy to reach top levels in minimum times based on what type of character was created, then I realized that changes should be made for a reason they give: BALANCE. And although, again, as I go to the test server there are changes that I do not agree with, but there are just as many people who do like the changes or at least don't mind any changes because the game is just fun. Really, with this game, I strongly suggest you just try it yourself before you choose NOT to ever play. I really think you would be missing out on something almost anyone can enjoy!
Bud I totally agree with you. In the solid year I have been playing CoH, there has not been one postive update. I have spent tons of time bringing heroes to LVL 50 to see them rot in my log screen. Now with issue 5 on its way, it seems that all the fun is gone. I presently have 2 accounts, and see them both being deleted. I compare the update to buying a new bike at Wally World. You go there one day, buy yourself a nice bike, and 3 months down the road some of Wally's employees come to your house and put square wheels on your bike. It's just not right! I will not continue to see my fun taken away from me when I am paying them to have fun.
My advise to anyone considering CoH is don't! You will waste countless hours on building something that the Developers will just destroy in a few months time. The only positive thing I have to say is that the community is one of the BEST I have seen anywhere. I have made 100's of new friends, and a few which became real life friends. City of Heroes is going down in flames and I will not be aboard to witness the fall.
I called it a mass exodus because that is precisely what I had been seeing pervious to my splitting. Literally the entirity of my sg is gone. And out of the 50 people on my global friends list 10 still played.
To put the record straight I actually did go back to the game for the sole purpose of raising the last main character I had to 50. That's done and now on top of not liking _any_ of the changes that are coming about in I5 I am bored with everything else in the game. None of the other archtypes interest me, the new powersets I dislike and a new zone? It would only be new for a day at the most after which I will have seen/done everything to do in that zone.
Now because I know someone is going to say this YES I HAVE COPIED ALL MY CHARACTERS TO THE TEST SERVER! I spent more hours than I care to admit to there and it simply proved to be the final nail in the coffin. To anyone out there considering the purchase of this game I strongly advise you not to bother. Sure the game may kill a couple months of your free time and the game does in fact have the best community of any game I have played ever, it's simply not worth the money.
That being said I will however state that it is the least rotten game out there IMO. It's just not enough for me to continue playing anymore.
I wish to God I didn't know now; the things I didn't know then.

I share this general opinion, although I think you are a little harsh toward Cryptic, this is something we share about the game (although our reasons may vary, me it is the Hamidon that I cant stand in ANY form, he need to die permanently with all the HOs...or move to another planet that dont affect Paragon City in any form, then I would not care on what happen on this planet since I will not consider it part of the game, and the rest of the game would be why I play or not).
Did you try Horizon? It is pretty much everything CoH is not, and it is incredibly hardcore...to hardcore for me with what is going on in my life ATM (younger or older I could have stick to Horizons and cheerish it)...but playing a dragon in a world that is so different...well, kinda cheap to try...and if you dont like it, you can always hate me for this reason!

Originally posted by perendengue well, I was shocked with the proposed changes for I5 as well, but oddly enough I hear mostly positive feedback about how it is making things more fun for tankers and controllers. They can just sit in one place and spam a button every little while, they need to be engaged.
Explain to me how it makes things fun for controllers. Our holds durations have been reduced AND the recycle has been increased and some can only have 1 set of pets out. How is that fun? Please... do tell, x2 damage on char? What a laugh. We're controllers not blasters. A base line fire controller goes from 6-12 pets out to 3, just 3! They have pathetic hit points, no defense and have crappy DPS... when you have 6-12 they have decent DPS and if you lose a few it's ok, you have more than 3.
A whole bunch of you guys got spoiled on your FotM's. So of course you're not going to recognize the differences between being super powered, and being Over Powered. In late game you're not fighting hellions anymore, you're fighting elite specialists and monstrosities that would take out whole Swat teams.
Stop talking about it and just leave already, you're not wanted. Now the casual gamers are required to get Hasten and other minmaxxing crap because you "Super" Heroes broke whatever challenge was left in mid and late game and the Devs had to rebalance the difficulty against YOUR overpowered builds.
But hey, some skilled players are still soloing AV's. If any of you don't feel like Super Heroes anymore, then maybe it's because you never actually learned to PLAY as one.

First off, the "you're not wanted"... Nice of you to speak for everyone there, however I believe there are alot that have different opinions than your professional official opinion.
What I will say is this. I belong to multiple SG's totalling over 400 people in strength. One of those was the largest and (yes, arguably) best known SG on the Victory server. Out of the 75 PLAYERS (not characters... only one character per player in the main SG) that used to be online constantly only 10 are currently on and some of those plan on leaving as well. This is the reason that most (yes most, not all) have/will be leaving.
COH started out as a PVE game and Statesman said that "PVP will never affect PVE play". Lets check here. HO's were decreased becasue "in the arena, those that chose not to participate in the Hamidon Raids had no chance against those players that did (go on Hamidon Raids)" There is one, how about the travel powers? Super speed, fly and superjump are deactivated once you cue an attack or take damage. Why? Because in the arena some travel powers caused the game to go on tilt. These must be isolated cases.... Regeneration Scrappers? Unkillable in some situations in the arena... Nerf. Need more? Go onto the Dev lists on the oficial forum and take a look at all the lists of each and every class that is getting the "fat cut away" and see how it is being liked.
Another comment by a dev that no longer works there and the post seemed to disapear for some reason (after over 200 different posts were made). COV characters were not able to interact with the COH characters because COH characters were too powerful, so changes had to be made. IE COH characters had to be decreased in power so they could balance out.
"PVP will never affect PVE play". Really?
That is why some are leaving. Mass exodis? Maybe not, but when you promise one thing then come back later and go completely against your word. That makes people very upset.

I don't see the recent changes are a direct result due to the introduction of PvP. I see PvP as the catalyst that brought to light these changes that needed to be done. It would have happened without PvP later.
Course this is all speculation. and it's hard to prove a negative. (We don't have weapons of mass destruction=we did not change PvE because of PvP)
The other thing to consider. Can one promise to never change something in an MMO? All MMO have updates, changes to powers, tweeks to villians and player's characters. I actually thought it was very telling of Statesman's inexperience with MMORPGs. I think he's learning though. I believe they are taking the right approach of building from the ground up.
Go back to the OLD interviews regarding CoH. Are those promises broken? Yep...because during development, plans change. They promised the ability to choose any power combo sets without arch-types. They had to go back on that promise. They promised that a zone can physically change when one faction starts to take over. That's broken due to technology constraints (I just hope future implementations of this get worked in) There's a whole slew of things from old interviews that never made it past alpha and early beta testing. Every MMO goes through those changes. Nothing is static.
Go forth, play, have fun. If something is no longer fun from actual experience ( and I5 is still in testing so that is only testing experience) then move on.
Sure, you may not like the game, but many others still do (myself and many of my online friends)..many learn, adopt new stratagies, and continue to have fun.
your arguement is so persuasive, so filled with knowledge and insight. You back up your argument very articulately, with suggestions of improvements and raising examples to glorify your position....oh wait, you didn't
Yup, cancelled my account. The in-game changes didnt bother me, it's all the bugs they introduced into the game.
A sound looping crash, which I crashed out every mission, unable to log in, getting stuck on the update screen. Busted UI options, increased lag in cities and missions. These problems did not appear AT ALL until the recent update.
If they had released a stable Issue 5 patch, sure, I'd still be on. But this is a load of garbage. I would recommend everyone to not buy/play City of Heroes until they fix all the crashes/lag/graphic problems. I'd also recommend everyone to cancel the account until they fix everything.
This tells me they rushed they patch to make business deadlines to make more money. And they dont deserve my money for all the problems they make to the game.
For those who complain about leaving and such, just go already, you'll not be missed. It's just one or two less that I hear bitching about "nerfing" and such and have to /ignore. My scrapper can solo groups of five who are three to four levels higher than me. Controllers aren't supposed to solo, they're for group support. They added x2 for you morons who complain about not being able to solo, so they took your ability to have tons of pets, thas called "balance". Those who complain about stability really need to understand that if they're still playing WoW, they have no reason to complain about a little lag with CoH. CoH has never in the history i've played have significant downtimes, extreme crashes, extremely bad lag, or anything else that you all seem to think are going to cause a "mass exodus" the only thing that's going to thin out the population is the CoV Beta and when CoV comes out.
if you're going to go, go and get it over with, you come back then shame on you.
Of the seven COH players on my msn list no more than 2 are still playing. 3 have left unhappy with the latest patch. 1 has stayed on and is enjoying it. 2 haven't been playing since 2 weeks before the update but had tried it on the test servers, and a final one I suspect is still happily playing.
including myself thats 6/8 (or more) of the COH players I am in regular contact with have left in the past month and a half.
For me Coh has been of high standard and an overidingly fun experience.
The gameworld and content is unfortunately a little too finite. Within a very few hundred hours there is nothing new to do, only new people to meet or the reassuringly same people to recreate the same tried and tested scenes with.
Like with chess, I don't feel that rules of the game need to be changed to keep it fresh. I feel the opposite, permanency is a sign of success.
I5 like I4 reduced the power of my character, (only to an unignorable degree). Like many of the above posters I no longer look forward to playing it. To my mind RPG games involve character development. My character has been unable to develop since Janaury 2005. Since that date, regardless of further thousands of hours play, he has gradually become less powerful over time with each consequetive update. To the point now, where he is in a state I consider to be unplayable.
With the new patch I went from having almost every badge to being told (in error) that I had not completed every task force. Those task forces each took over 10 hours of solid play for 8 people and I had done 5 of them. Now I have not. Technical support said that they were fully capable of awarding me the badges to correct this new error, but they were not going to do so. Instead of wasting their time, (asking for the help I thought I was paying for), I should redo the same 5 task forces again at over 10 hours each with a minimum of 8 other players for each. I don't suppose my time is particularly valuable to them. Likewise it seems, my custom. I have taken particular pleasure in recovering all of my subscription fee's through Visa. While I feel that the general quality of the game has been very high, I paid for 24/7 technical support and they are contractually bound to provide it to me, which they refused.
This isn't worth my time. There are so many other games I have yet to play.

People I've grouped with still having fun, our tank can still tanks; Controller still controls, our regen scrapper was still taking out lts and bosses and my blaster was doing damage.
Now, I will not say "everyone" is happy with the recent change. With any change comes either acceptance, adaptation or moving on. Don't like it, can't adapt, then move on.
Before I5, it was easy, even with the difficulty set to "invicible".

Ditto. If there's an exodus that happened, I haven't seen it yet.
Well in baff's defense (since he did defend me, which i am thankful for )
The servers have a high peak and a low peak when players are on. Freedom, Infinity, Virtue have a lot of players on them. I'd say they are the most busiest servers.
Essentially, the load meter when you log on is displayed. Each server has three dots. 1 dot means light server lord, 2 dots (yellow) means medium server load, and 3 dots (heavy) server load.
Liberty server when peaked around 8PM PST had a player base between 1000 - 1200 people. But after 11 PM, lately, the population runs around 300 people (give or take) When I logged around the morning around 7 am sometimes through 2 pm, population was about 400-ish.
Freedom which I consider the highest population server peaked around 1800 people when i logged on there. Freedom was 2 dots at the time. But the low point was around 400 people during not busy times.
Its a matter of perspective really. If you want to play when theres a lot of people, you gotta log in during those peak times. I consider about 5 - 6 hrs of the day peak times. The rest of the times, the servers are green. That leaves what, 18 hrs the server is on a low load?
Could I be making up these numbers, sure. But I do believe in them.
Now, some will argue, the servers have been upgraded, etc. Which makes a valid point. Since more upgrades = less server loads, hence less load.
But this is a huge difference from Issue 5 then it was lets say Issue 2. Back then, all the servers were yellow, all the time. You could log in like 3 am, and all the servers would still be yellow.
But decide on your own. You make the decisions and judgement calls.
Personally I wouldn't compare now with Issue 2...Issue 2 was during mostly just summer...After issue 2, ppl go back to school, (There was WOW), (Launch of European COH) and maybe some others...The Launch of Euro COH may have pulled off some ppl who plays at weird times, and going back to school would cause that too...
another reason now is low, is also COV beta test...COH will remain somewhat low until probably couple months after COV launches...I5 really did not affect amount of players all that much as far as I saw on guardian..

You will not be missed either.
COH servers don't lag because they are empty.
Please, with the drama and hyperbole. I was on last night from 6pm to 9 pm pacific. Checking the "search" all, there are were a total of 1.2k - 1.7k non-hidden players between those hours on the infinity server. Empty=0

But after 11 PM, lately, the population runs around 300 people (give or take)
When I logged around the morning around 7 am sometimes through 2 pm, population was about 400-ish.
