What if you take the maker of EVE for space flight, space combat, and planets-traversal implementation, the makers of Saga of Ryzom for on-planet Ecosystem, mobs behavior, and weather/seasonal effects, the makers of WoW for implementing the quests system, the makers of GuildWars to create the PVP arena and battle ground, and the maker of UO for implementing roleplaying features?
They can make an awesome game!
I seen people jumping from one game to another, and after playing a while got bored with it and switch back, claming low contents and nothing to do etc.
I am only DREAMING here, but wouldn't it be awesome if they all come together and make different aspects of one game, THE MMORPG to END ALL MMORPGs, consisting of different gameplays depending on what you're in the mood for, but tied together in some way?
Man I am having a blast just dreamin about it.

Dream on, young dreamer! Dream on!
Such a game would be impossible to do right without encountering some major design hurdles, wich i dont think tecnology or programing skills are good enough to handle presently.
THe closest to the kind of game you speak of is SWG, it as space and ground features, but the integration of its various components is not as good as it could have been.
The main thing we have to keep in mind is that games these days cant spend yers apon years in development and hope to be competitive when they are launched, most of the times the company that is funding the dev team has very clear ideas when it wants the game to be launched, moat of the time that makes for releases where half of the promissed features are either not there or buggy as hell.
A game with the high quality and content you sugest would have a unusualy large development cycle and cost more money than investors are willing to put into a mmorpg.
All ur Mountain Dew is belong to me.
Something like this would never ever happen, lets start from the beginning why do these companies make MMORPG's in the first place? Well that ones easy, it's to make 'money' the people who are at the top dont give a damn if their making great games their just happy as long as their games are making money and beating the competition.
Now for all these different companies to band together and make an UBER game just wouldn;t happen because they'd gain nothing from it. Unfortunatly we live in a world controlled by ruthless 'business men'.....you gotta love it.
It could be possible but it would require that its the only mmo out there. But I think it would be kinda cool to have a uber all in one mmo that everyone plays and on one server cluster (not server 1 and pvp only server 2 and rp server 3 just one big ass group to hold everyone kinda like eve-online)
WARNING: My spelling is atrocious
Well companies are copying and borrowing ideas from each other all the time, but there are distinct groups of players that prefer different things. Hardcore gamers vs casual gamers, open no rules PvP vs honor code restricted PvP, group/raid oriented players vs solo oriented players, PvP vs PvE, etc.
It would really be difficult to satisfy all persons within one game model. The answer lies in developing a good solid game and then providing multiple servers with various rulesets.

Everybody would sueing each other.
Anyway, I'll buy a hat and eat it if this ever happens.
But, its good to dream
Erm..
Right now SWG is the closest to what you're looking for. Except we don't need battlegrounds. PVP can happen anywhere in the game. It has fantastic roleplaying opportunities, decent quests (which have gotten a lot better with the latest expansion), a robust player driven economy, Both combat and non-combat professions and spaceflight that, imo, is better than in EVE (I don't like point-n-click spaceflight).
Soon we'll even have capitol ships, which tells me they're planning to do more work on the space side of the house as well.
Currently Playing: Dungeons and Dragons Online.

Still in: A couple Betas
Didnt know they were planning capital ships for SWG, that would indeed be a great adition to the game, hope they do it and also add more content to the space game.
All ur Mountain Dew is belong to me.
pls lemme join ur dream
i think it's really nice idea (let's suppose i dun care how the companies will deal with this... it's their problem if they wanna 'make money' )
i can imagine it like there were some teleports in kinda basic world from which u can get to any thematic 'MMORPG' type
for example info tab next to the port sayin 'medieval knights action' so put on ur heavy plates and swords or silk robes with staffs and step in
u r bored of all that medieval athmosphere? NO PROBLEM get in port which says 'charge ur blasters and kill as many as u can' -PvP
or
info by the port: masterchief of the marogesian tribe (whatever) needs u to do spyin mission for him to help out his army, dun try to attack be as silent and unseen as u can (and the plot and quest gets harder and harder passin through it) - this would be for solo introverts...
and in that basic world u can have ur own house and stuff like *cough* sims *cough* (i dun like em but since this'd be a universal MMORPG it could be there)
