Pantheon: Rise of the Fallen News - Visionary Realms has hit a huge milestone today when the doors to Patheon: Rise of the Fallen swing open for pre-alpha testers. The forums I can understand. They are looking for patrons for that service. Now, if they did the same once the game got into beta or launched that would be a different story. I could see them only allowing people who bought the game to post on forums. That would make sense.

$1000? Nope, not for me. I will be pledging for beta though as I'm ok with supporting the game. I'm not ok with giving $1000 for alpha.

Wow, this game is quickly losing my interest. The PATHETIC tiers of launches (money grabs). Way to COMPLETELY burn-off any excitement that I had for this game. Please people DONT FEED THIS MONSTER ANY MORE!!! Make them come with a FINISHED product, or NO MONEY!!!!

For those unable to understand the 1k pre-alpha price tag, Pantheon is looking for tester, the "pre-alpha" is a testing phase like all the other phases in Pantheon, not an early access phase, they need players willing to test the game, find the bugs, give good useful input, and above all players that are ok with and unfinished product and wanna help build/improve it.

Besides, when the game first launched the kickstarter the pre-alpha access price was around 100-200€ if I'm not mistaken

$150 AA alpha had people all in a tizzy a couple of years ago. How times are changing

But in reality they aren't the same thing. Oh sure, marketing wise they are.

But Archeage was pretty much a done deal. Pantheon is still trying to get funds for development. Heck, they list that one can actually become an investor. That's not really what archeage was looking for.

This is not to say that one should give 1k to the company. But one should give 1k to the company not for alpha access but to be a financial supporter (if one really wanted to do that).

Quite frankly, unless one is prepared to become an investor I don't think that's really worth it unless one has money to burn.

You know at one time people used to GET paid to do this work, not pay to test. This is a disturbing thing to me as it means companies get to monetize their testers... and no one sees anything wrong with this?

What I see that's wrong is people don't know what this is.

If you put it in the correct light, whether you agree with it or not, the company is soliciting funds for the development of their game.

For those people who have given a significant amount of funds, the company is inviting them to try the game, give feedback, help test, be a part of the process.

And why wouldn't they? Someone gives your company a bit of money to support your development they need to give something back.

VR didn't randomly choose from thier fans who would pay 1k+ to be part of the pre-alpha. These were willing individuals who knew exactly what they were paying for and why. I'm personally glad they paid it because I don't have to and I can enjoy the game when it gets to beta (when I'll probably buy in). It's not just to play early, it's to be part of the development of a title you're excited about.

They need to release a Benchmark app (like FFXIV) so that some of us can see if the game is even worth waiting for. If it runs badly at decent settings on my machine, then perhaps just going to something like FFXIV and ignoring Pantheon isn't that bad of an idea :-P

I'll probably do that anyways, since I'm in MMORPG purgatory ATM and can't really be bothered to "wait" for a game. By the time it comes out, I will refuse to leave the game I'm already playing, if I've found a guild and in-game friends to do things with... And there's also the WoW expansion coming, with the massive stat squish and PvP focus, which should be very fun!

Long ago and far away when a new MMORPG was releasing I would routinely upgrade my rig or replace it outright.

Gamers have grown soft expecting new game titles to run well on PCs with less power than their cell phones.

After the success of WOW combined with Vanguard"s failure to judge the technology level of the market PC gaming has been hobbled by the continual catering of designs to inferior hardware.

I'd love to see a new MMORPG come out that I knew I was going to have to upgrade for.

As it stands now my 3.5 year old Sager laptop plays current MMORPGs far too well, which is a mixed blessing of course.

As much as I like and will play Pantheon, I don't like the way things are going as a genre. Pay to test has been around for a while now but the tag to join has gotten steeper and steeper. I remember signing up for a chance to be apart of the beta after it was OUT of alpha. Now you get to pay to play early but no one knows what testing is and that's including the developers lol.

Here's hoping Pantheon gets the testing phases right.

The earliest access is hell expensive, but yeah if they make it too cheap too many people get in just to whine about it day and night like they haven't bought the game accesss at its most unfinished state,

What I was told about the pre-alpha thing was that they didn't need any more testers, but thought why not leave it available at a high price for those really interested (and have the means) to test it out.

Honestly THERE IS NO REAL ADVANTAGE to spending the money unless you want to really be involved and test the game. It's for those that want to throw money at Brad to help him make his game and he's letting you be there while they make it now.

For most this is not a good deal, not at all. You're donating money to the project and if you don't want to do that, you shouldn't spend the money. For those that can spend the money and want to see it made, I wish them the best of luck. I hope the community is so rabid and single focused on helping the dev team make a phenomenal game. We need a solid 2017 MMO that harkens back to the old PVE MMOs of yesteryear.
