"It’s a crime that WildStar isn’t more popular".

Holy crap. Get over it already. It was annoying how much Bill hyped this, as soon as I tried this game, tried the so called 'Explorer' class, and soon realized it was like playing Super Mario Brothers, that is not exploring. ESO does much more justice to the world Exploring (if you don't use mods to show you where everything is). Now its dead, and you folks still won't let go. The game didn't do well because it just wasn't good to the majority of folks who played it. That doesn't make it a crime, it just is what it is and maybe you folks just hype bad games sometimes.
Holy macaroni Batman! Explorer is not even a class.

I bet a major reason Pantheon didn't beat out Ashes of Creation is because the genre is filled with gamers who weren't around for the old-school rules. If we had the same demographic and appreciation for difficulty in MMORPGs, the difference between Pantheon and Ashes would be like the difference between a AAA title and an indie title. Despite my opinion, though, I will be playing both, but I'm certainly going to get more out of Pantheon since I can appreciate it more.

    Best Hybrid MMO....uggh.

Destiny 2 is not a hybrid MMO. There is nothing MMO about it! A 16 player online shooter is nowhere close to being massively multiplayer. Whilst I agree there is crossover appeal with the MMORPG crowd and I'm happy for you to cover such games, please don't contribute to dissolving the genre and misunderstanding of the term. You are supposed to be an authority on the genre so you should be able to distinguish between the technology (MMO - number of people in the same virtual environment) from the features (RPG - progression, loot, classes, dungeons, raids etc).

As to the actual awards.....meh. Only three were about MMOs.

Most Anticipated - Ashes of Creation. I really don't know much about it. It seems pretty sub-standard to me, just another indie sandbox, it just happened to raise marginally more money on kickstarter than other kickstarter MMOs. What are you most excited about? Only unique thing seems to be the AI driven political changes and town growth. Whilst that sounds good, it also sounds wildly unachievable on their budget.

Most Underrated - Wildstar. Strongly disagree, as would the overwhelming majority of people who ever played it. Apart from housing, Wildstar seemed to fail at every single thing they attempted. Such a disjointed mess of a game.

Best MMO - FFXIV. There were basically only two contenders for this, FFXIV and ESO. Nothing new this year, so only relying on oldies, most of which aren't getting much love. I'm surprised Stormblood beat Morrowind, but I guess there isn't much in it so doesn't matter which way it goes.

Wow, we made it further than I thought before the 'Dis ain't no MMO' argument. Can we all agree that there no..NO..MMOs since the golden age of [insert you're favorite game].

The salt in this thread is delicious. Especially the 'my opinion is better then your opinion' salt, it really never gets old. Lets hope facts and opinions will still be hardly distinguishable in 2018 as well.

OT, awesome list, best list ever. Fact!

'This does not apply just to ED but SC or any other game. What they will get is Rebirth/X4, likely prettier but equally underwhelming and pointless.

"Wildstar, Wildstar, where do you roam?
Wildstar, Wildstar, so far from home."

100+ nerd awards for anyone who can name that TV show theme song.

Wildstar. I don't know whether I'm getting used to you or you are actually a better game than when you launched, or whether after 3 tries, I have a high enough level character (11) to begin to enjoy the game or what the deal is.

Whether after playing BDO, Shadow of Mordor, Path of Exile and Skyforge, I'm okay with your combat, whether every other game out there is boring me and I'm recycling through the fails on my external hard drive. Or maybe its just because it's Christmas and I'm feeling generous.

Downloaded the game for the 4th time and am giving it a fair shot at becoming interesting. It's a pretty steep mountain of dis to climb. Disinterest, disengagement, disappointment. Entering with no expectations whatsoever, I find the obnoxiously arch dialogue less so, the crazy colored terrain more forgiving, and the combat more fun and less frenetic than I remembered. Maybe I've been desensitized?

That it's an overwhelming pile of shouting competing activities is still true. That there is zero support for the game is also true. Wiki pages are mostly filled in with "this is a stub, log in to contribute" and no one does. If there's a community, it's gone underground.

Really, if you're looking for an old-style, do-it-yourself MMO, this is certainly it, because Google will not help you. You've got to figure it out for yourself. There are no help pages and the radar map is cluttered with unidentified icons that only experience will help you decipher. It's frustrating, sure. But as the old hard-asses like to say, it's a challenge and so satisfying when you finally figure out that T is an action word.

    Happy Holidays to all.

Definitely in the wasteland this year and you took grandma to the prom.

For what it's worth, I did sub FF14 for 6 months of 2017 but I'd put BDO higher on my personal list of 2017 MMO experiences. Even with the shitty RnG enchant system.

Just my opinions.....Wildstar is just a bad game. It is not a crime for people to not like bad games. It looks great, it looks fun, but it just.....isn't. The game lacks the most important element in a game...fun.

I'll never understand the FFXIV craze, but to each their own with that one. Wildstar on the other hand, its failure after the ultra-hype (I bought in too) speaks volumes about the game.

Would agree on the Final Fashion XIV comment. The graphics are above average and the fights are pretty okay if you don't break down the 3 overlapping mechanics that they use for most fights (4 if you count falling off/pushed off). Everything else is barebones though, even the fashion element. But as you said, it seems the current generation is into this kind of thing. I'll say that it has a lot of potential though.

The hate you have for FF is unreal

You see this as "unreal hate"? rofl. You FFXIV fans are so sensitive.

Im neither sensitive nor a ffxiv fan but i have noticed that in every thread that ff is being mentioned he is there bashing it for whatever reason. He must have some deep grudge for it.

You don't have to defend FFXIV from them, they don't HAVE to like it, just play what you enjoy.
    Fellow FFXIV player here.

Seeing Destiny 2 in that list was a real WTF moment, the only thing Destiny 2 does is highlight just how dirty a developer Bungie is, it would not be at all surprising if gamers boycotted Bungie for their shenanigans if not outright greed and their total disregard for the players, so glad i dodged the bullet on that one, but classing Bungie as one of the dirtiest developers out there today is not unjustified, they solidly earned it.

Wish I would have stuck with FF14. Was there for the first 2-3 months after relaunch, loving it. But none of my friends wanted to play it and I kind of wandered away. Good to see it doing good though!

I could never really get into ESO, I played it for a fair bit of time but it just felt really empty and like something was missing the whole time to me.

FFXIV is a great game, if not very generic. Having put many hours into the game I would say it is worth a run through for the story (if you are into that) but other than that it pretty much becomes a slower version of a WoW style game imo.

I feel BDO should have at the very least been given an honorable mention just due to the fact that it has so many things that you can do in the game, and is very different from any other MMO currently out once you sink your teeth into it. Yes the business practices are sometimes a little naff, and at its core it is a grind game, but in both aspects its defiantly not the worst, and really lets face it most games have a 'grind' usually dressed up by raids or quests anyway, but at least BDO tries to give people some options outside of the norm. Whatever flaws the game may have (and it does have a number) it is definitely worth trying and giving some time over these other clone type games.

Black Desert is the true mmo of 2017.

The game expanded to like 10 more countries.

Revenue of 1st half of 2017 was more than the whole 2016

Pearl Abyss listed on stock exchange because of Black Desert's success

Console version announced and playable at E3

Black Desert gave so much FREE content updates from new classes, pvp server, and areas like Kamasilvia.

No monthly sub fee and no charge for content updates.

All for just the box price of $9.99 or $5.00 if you catch it on sale.

I laughed at the part about ESO streak.

Black Desert launched in March 2016 so you telling me an older game like Elder Scrolls that did not even come out in 2016 got game of the year over Black Desert that launched in 2016? :/

As mentioned, kinda sad that there isn't really a Best NEW MMO 2017, but I'd say the list is rather spot-on, aside from Destiny 2 and Wildstar. While there aren't many "hybrid MMOs" to choose from, even The Division would've been a better pick, IMO. As far as Wildstar ... It isn't under rated by any means; its just not well liked. TONS of people played it; very few people stuck around, though.

Yeah, Stormblood is a great expac, but the game has quickly fallen into the WoW gear grind treadmill and became old hat quickly thereafter to me. ESO's One Tamriel/Morrowind was much, much better IMO.

Destiny 2 is NOT a hybrid mmo, neither a quasi mmo, nor an mmofps or any other made-up terms its fans try to staple onto it. Even if the list... errr and in here I'd :+1:  @Scot too, a "list" of 5, on 3 pages?  so even if the list is "General awards", and you really want to put it on there somewhere, then say the best pew pew (there were betters imo), or the best console port (no console ports are good), or anything you want, just not this hybrid mmo bullpoo. Thx.

Agree 100%. There's nothing MMO about Destiny beyond dropping you into the FPS tunnel with other players by default. I didn't feel like I'm my own character any more than I would playing as Master Chief. It's a co-op fps, and there's nothing wrong with that.

I'm not normally picky about labeling genres; I'm usually on the other side of discussions like this. And I'm not complaining that MMORPG.com covers this kind of game, as it is potentially a game that MMO players could be interested in. But it doesn't have anything that other FPS's haven't had in the past, it just plugs you into multiplayer automatically.

On FF14, it's not my thing, either. But to each their own, and I'm glad it was able to turn the mess around and give the folks that love that kind of game what they want. Hopefully the same will happen in these up and coming indie releases.

What other multiplayer shooters do what Destiny does? The Division, Defiance, and PS2 kind of not really.
Helldivers.  Top-down isometric multiplayer co-op shooter.

    Borderlands series

Two off the top of my head, neither ever being called an MMO.  The most significant difference between them and Destiny is they don't have virtual lobbies.  They're traditional style lobbies.  Hardly a feature worth altering a friggin' genre label.

Neither of those are close to having the same sort of game world as the above. Destiny and the Division have persistent shared zones. Does the top down shooter have that feature?

The claim is, “But it doesn't have anything that other FPS's haven't had in the past...”. That’s not really true. These games are different in significant ways.
Really?  Destiny's shared zones are persistent?  The exist if no players are loaded into the zone?  The mobs and such?

My understanding was they're shared, but that doesn't mean persistent.  They're spawned as needed and shared, despawning if all players exit the instance.  The zones are populated on the fly and maintained only while players actively engaged them.
