MMORPGs where you can dual-client / multibox?

texhnolyzetexhnolyze Member UncommonPosts: 58
Hello folks,

First thing first, I have ASTER installed which allows me to setup my PC to output to 2 different users at once.

Basically something like this:

Over the past few months, me and my wife have been looking for MMORPG that we can play together. But so far we've only found very few of them. The main problem is MMORPGs that have another client on top of the game's launcher, like Steam, Glyph, etc. In those cases, multiboxing is not possible. It seems that NCSoft games are easier for multiboxing because they don't have their own client on top of their games' launcher.

So far, these are the games that we've played together via multiboxing:

- Aion
- WildStar
- Guild Wars 2
- WoW private servers
- Revelation Online (it sucks)

If possible, I don't want to resort to virtual machine programs like sandboxie or isboxer. I played the games listed above without the help of virtual machines. I do use a 3rd party program to multibox in GW2, but that's not exactly virtual machine, I think. Another problem is XIGN code protection like the one that's used in Black Desert. Multiboxing is not possible due tot hat.

So, can you please recommend me some multiboxing friendly MMORPGs?

I've multiboxed on Wizard 101, Pirate 101 and Dofus. It's been some time, but unless something has changed those were very friendly and allowed me to run multiple clients without any tricks.

EvE Online allows you to run multiple accounts from a single launcher.

I was going to suggest EVE but then he mentioned his wife.

I remember boxing when lotro went f2p. That was a few years ago now so clueless if they still allow it.

Well yeah, regular themepark mmorpgs would be preferable for us.

LOTRO sounds like a good fit, I'll try it later, thanks.

LotRO is definitely working, but it's somewhat a grey area. The tech has nothing against it, and for your goals there won't be any issues from the dev side either. Boxing is "fine" when you play together shared (nice tool btw.) or when someone tries out a new song and needs an extra instrument to test the harmonies, or for a coordinated photoshoot with alts, etc.

However, their fingers become pretty twitchy when it used for "gaining", especially in the Moors (pvp) either as a free kill target, or a spy (listening the other side's conversations). But they don't like it in PvE either, when used for deed advancing for example.

Anyways, for your aim, two persons playing on the same gear at the same time, I'm sure it's fine. Even when grouped, and clearing dungeons together.

    Everquest 2 definitely supports that.

I'm not sure how multi-boxing differs from running multiple instances of the game client on the same computer, and this from the same IP, each logged in on a different account?

If they are the same thing, then a private server version of Jade Dynasty will work fine.  xTreme JD and Monkey Dynasty are two that will work.

I've been told that Guild Wars 1 will do this but I only have one account so I cannot verify, personally.
This forum is broken. It is time to move to proboards, because they're broken.

Yes, that's basically what I meant. MMORPGs which you can run multiple instances easily. I think it's essentially the same as multiboxing.

I tried multi-boxing before, but I didn't find it enjoyable.  I'm guessing a really big monitor and having the windows setup right next to each other would help, but multitasking usually gives me a headache.  Focusing on one thing at a time is better for me.  I'd rather try to write a script or program to automate the other characters, but I don't think it's worth it.

Glyph allows you to multi-client and trion supports it (for AA at least). All you do is boot the game up then log out the launcher, log in to the different account and boot it up again. Works fine for Rift and AA. It'll just bring up a prompt usually if you're sure you want to load the game again. Only thing to my knowledge they dont allow is you logging into your NA and EU 'sides' at the same time (like boot the game up on the NA servers, switch the region, and do it again on the same account). Lol I think I even read a dev post a while back that multi-boxing was encouraged in AA.

Some games on steam are easier to bypass as well like Neverwinter since steam usually takes you to their individual launcher and you can just log in and out of multiple accounts via that.

A Tale In The Desert is basically intended to be multi-boxed, though it's a very old sandbox game so probably not what you are looking for.
I want to help design and develop a PvE-focused, solo-friendly, sandpark MMO which combines crafting, monster hunting, and story.  So PM me if you are starting one.

So it's possible in ArcheAge? I'd love to play that game again. I tried Rift before but it didn't work so I thought it'll be the same for AA as well. Thanks, I'll try it.

Edit: Just tried it with Rift, and it's complicated. Your method works if I run 2 clients on the same Windows user (mine). The problem is, each user has its own tasks and processes. So if I open Glyph on my account, it won't be possible to open it on my wife side. Because there's this one process called 'GlyphCrashHandler64' which will close the game if it's terminated. As long as the process is alive on one account, the other account won't be able to open Glyph.

Eq2, lotro, WOW and you don't need any third party programs, just play in Windows mode.
