Re: These new rounds of game ads

So I am looking at this ad for "Dragon Awakening" and given the overly blatant World of Warcraft "Rip-Off" images. Does MMORPG.COM really recommend we click these links? I've never heard of this game. I don't recognize the URL that the ads link to. Are you really suggesting we go to these sites? Have these advertisers been vetted?

If you don't trust it don't click on it. No website is going to vet every ad, as most of them come from an ad company, and if they find out there is an issue usually most sites are extremely quick to respond. Right now I have ads for Neverwinter, Guild Wars 2, and Tera. I would vet those sites as they are definitely real.

I think it's more about them being "part of a service" where some company handles video game ads, they list mmorpg.com as one of the sites that their service "services" and then companies pay to have their ads displated.

I imagine mmorpg.com can also select certain criteria as well so that certain companies don't advertise. Such as "adult video games" or some such thing.

    that's my guess anyway.

Right now I have an AD for Star Stable...   It's not even properly cropped, so the bottom halve of Stable is missing.

Kind of wish I knew what I browsed to be a target, or if they're just targeting a very wide net.

I don't see what's so unusual about this site running ads for online games.  Sure, the game sites have a lot of broken English and it's games that start a new "server" every few days and constantly merge or shut down old ones, so it's not like they're games that you might actually want to play.  But still, if they're going to advertise such games, this site is a reasonable place to do it.

I do my best not to click on links posted by third-party sites. If I see something that interests me I look up the actual website of the company/business selling the product or service.

I realize these are online billboards and that we are talking about 3rd and even 4th party advertising on the site. But I was just curious about what this site's management though about allowing illegitimate ads vs. making their income.

I know there is a light bill. But at the same time, we are also the audience that ads are trying to reach.  I would think something of "Don't bite the hand that feeds you" might be a thought here.

If these links are illegitimate scams. And I don't think all of them are, but ones that use blatant ripoffs from other games, and I've never heard of them, My thought is beware.

You can say, mmorpg.com isn't responsible for what the ad service runs, but It's potentially still biting the hand that feeds.

Ah, I think I see what the problem is now.  I just saw an add for "Pokemon Mega", and it wasn't from Nintendo.  I didn't recognize the artwork for Dragon Awaken, but if it's stolen from WoW, then yeah, that's IP theft.  That would make it a lot like the League of Angels ads some years ago.

The cropping of border ads happens when you increase the size of the page using Ctrl +.  This isn't a poorly cropped ad.  It's a setting you've chosen to make.

Pardon my mostly clueless web page advertising basic question... does this site get any revenues from those that don't block the ads seeing the ads or is it just from clicks on the ads?

I ask this because there is only ever a very tiny minority of ads here that I would ever click on deliberately, although I have indeed clicked on some accidentally over the years.

I enjoy this site and the content here but I use ad blockers because the sheer number of garbage game adverts is just off putting.

I think they get some "shill" pennies just from us just seeing the ads. I am sure someone will object to that as it effects their impartiality or something.
