This week's MMOFTW covers the five biggest stories in the MMO world for the week of January 20th. Devilian is sunsetting, Camelot Unchained has monies, WoW scales its levels, Bless commits to Steam Early Access soon, and Rift gets a subscription only server.

It was fun during Beta, but after launch the game tanked hard
Yeah... Devilian was a themepark MMORPG, unlike Diablo III which is an action game that can be played cooperatively. That it isn't a surprise is due to a prolonged lack of new story content in a genre that generally requires it reasonably often to maintain player interest.
The recent offering of MU Legend, which is more directly comparable to Devilian in terms of nature and scope, probably didn't do it any favours either.
Ok to be clear, there are a lot of issues I still have with the game.
CU's new cash influx should finally allow them to soon make some new promo videos I hope. Yeesh! That old crap has to go.

Camelot Unchained, well that is great news, people investing in indie MMOs is good sign.
Scaling in WoW is another solid MMO idea, introduced years ago to the MMO world, I am astonished it is not a MMO standard.
Subscription only servers are interesting, always good to try something new. There are issues of concern, but no loot boxes and a minimised cash shop can only be a great set up.
That AtlasReactor game survives because of a league, the Trove is lego blocks and AA and Rift i am not so sure are doing too good over here.
I figure they are making enough money but not enough to ever attempt another AAA game,so all i expect from Trion is maybe a mobile game or another AR.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.
P.S - a pack for one of the other games, hmm would have been ok but i play rift and defiance as well. didnt like archage (too much in the wallet with the must use cash shop and subscribe as well) 1 or the other but both is a no, no and no.
Altho i hope CU can pull it off , im skeptical on some of there promises ..ex 21 classes and 30 races , We have been down this road with MJ before . he failed
Scaling sucks in all games imo
Good news for Rift possibly , if launch right and Trion does not get greedy .. But yea , AA needs this treatment more so and would be a great move .. But would also prove there past approach to AA wrong as it would crush there current servers..
Bless had better deliver a game without the performance issues to STeam or it will be torn apart
mmorpg junkie since 1999
They also come in a trio of different, yet shared themed concepts shared across the 3 factions. Basically so instead of there being 3-4 classes per faction with 3 variations each in build (which is 9 or more variations total anyway) they are making more uniquely themed classes. Sort of the same but cosmetically more demanding perhaps. It also allows them to slap in classes quickly after release and we all know how long some games take to create new complex, tri build classes so CU will benefit more from a wider selection of lore heavy themed variety in classes in a game not restricted to a holy trinity format with risk of redundancy.
Class identity should be a big thing too like, "that's a Wow druid" but what kind of druid because it's a big difference between specs and more like, "that's a Dark Fool ... we know what it does, kill it because it's annoying" or something like that.
New classes in CU only have to fit a basic role within a much larger siege style combat system so balance isn't too important other than extreme cases.

Shame that Archeage is arguably the finest mmo ever made, mishandled by questionable monetization.
I am actually a little bit interested in the sub-only Rift server, as I kind of like Rift but don't especially like Trion's take on f2p. I hope it succeeds. I hope it succeeds well enough to create a subscription renaissance.
So... Bless is coming for real this time? Heh.
...
This is where I draw the line: __________________.
To be fair, a lot of the stuff from the whole AA debacle was XLGames, Trion didn't have much control over it. Then they saw it got them money and followed with all the Rift cashshop crap. If you look at all the games they actually made themselves, they're all still really good.
As for Bless, they honestly only have 1 more shot and I really do not know if they can do it or not. Competition is going to kick up this year with WoW taking a lot of the population due to their expansion towards the end of the year and FFXIV getting some spikes due to their FF character inspired raid bosses (Savage Kefka man....with an additional phase PLUS the final raid tier will probably be at the end of the year so it better be something from FF8). Lets not forget A:IR is still slated to release this year or at least go into beta which is pretty much similar to Bless and has no previous shut downs in their belt like Bless does.
"The PRIME server will progress at a faster pace than the original launch and will eventually come to an end in spectacular fashion."
Yep, don't think I'm going to touch this.
Anyhoo... not sure why someone who already has an account with their other games that got an account For Devilian shouldn't get those game packs like anyone else. For one, they're absolutely free to Trion; it's not like it would cost them anything to give them to everyone on the server(unless it's gonna be an xpac? I doubt it). And 2nd, they invested their time on the game they're closing like anyone else did.
