The issue with this MMO as with others, more PLAYERS need to be involved in development. While a lot of developers are MMO players, they, for all their good intentions, miss the forest because of the trees.
If SWTOR gets shut down that will be the end of a story driven SW MMO. The cost of making a voice acted story driven MMO is too high for the return about all we would see would be more Battlefronts and that's it. The only thing that would save the big budget MMO's is players being willing to pay for their game i.e. B2P with a sub with out that we will see the death of the big budget MMO's,,,, And don't say " well what about SC it's big budget!!!" 1st it's not launched yet, 2nd for them to continue the game when it is launched they will have to have a huge cash flow,,,,, so I would not be surprised if they go with a sub!!
So all you cheep skates,,,, if you want too play you have to pay!!!
if it wasn't for how horribly they handle PvP i'd probably never quit the game.. as it is now i mostly play it for the stories which are great.. far greater than anything disney's come up with so far anyways.
I hope they do shut it down. It's the first step towards a new Star Wars MMO.
A new Star Wars MMO by published by EA? Good luck buddy. Hell, a new tripple A MMO at all releasing from a Western dev is pretty unlikely at this point.

While voice acting is some what expensive to the point where more developers are enlisting more over seas actors and actresses for voice over work really only proves that not every conversation in a game needs interactive voice over with a cgi scene. SWTOR really only proved that story and personal player quests are really only needed to move the players journey forward. And those pesky fetch type quests or non story type quests can be accomplished without them.
As far as SWTOR was concerned James Ohlen has been stated that more money went into development game engine along with other aspects of the game than went into voice acting.
""[Voice acting] was a known entity, and cost was quite low in comparison to the cost of the rest of the project." In other words, BioWare had been there and done that with voice acting already in its other games and budgeted accordingly. However, BioWare did not have a tested platform to build an MMO. Much of the cost was funneled toward creating an engine that supported a team of over 300 people working on it at the same time and adding choice and consequence to the MMO story. "Don't be scared about adding voice over and cool cinematic content," he advised his audience, "but do be careful about adding lots of choice with consequence because that adds to QA cost and development cost and makes it hard to design everything."
EA's business model going forward is to make money off of the initial sale and every time the consumer logs into the game for the life of the game. And this is the only reason that the claim that linear single player games are not as popular as the used to be. They only want to phase them out because it's much cheaper to create a game that only uses multiplayer mapping without the need for any involved story campaign. And it's easier for them to incorporate MTX type live services to those games.
"Star Wars: The Old Republic was a massive MMORPG launch back in 2011. The game is often called one of the last great MMOs to come out of that era."
Lol. SWTOR was a failure from launch. The players hated it, the wider community hated it. It was heading for a financial failure 3 months after launch. The only people who enjoyed it are those who enjoyed the solo story. If you go back and read the EA investor documents from that time, EA even said the game tanked.
Hence the F2P switch and the aggressive monetisation. That was the only way to save the game. It's why every single addition to the game has been a pile of shit - they can't afford to release decent stuff! When you can complete an entire expansion in 6 hours of regular gameplay, you know the game isn't doing well.
I don't begrudge the people who continued to enjoy the game, I'm glad there is something out there for you. But SW:TOR isn't really an MMO, it was certainly never great. Rather than being the last of the great's, I would say it instead signalled the downfall of the genre, the slide into mediocrity.
Do I want to see it shut down?
Whats the point? With EA retaining control of the license there is no point shutting down SW:TOR. EA aren't capable of releasing decent games so there is no chance of us seeing a decent Star Wars RPG of any variety for another 5 years, let alone a new, decent MMORPG. So, may as well leave it running, let the small amount of players who still enjoy it have some more fun.
Currently Playing: WAR RoR - Spitt rr7X Black Orc | Scrotling rr6X Squig Herder | Scabrous rr4X Shaman
They may put the game on an indefinite content hiatus. But so long as people are playing and paying subs/unlocks. They'll keep the game going. Even if it incurs a loss of profits. Because as it stands. EA owns the only license for Star Wars that is free from the cannon setting/story. When Disney purchased Star Wars they added an addendum to EA's license that permits them to continue the Old Republic. So long as they don't tie anything directly to the current cannon. No other studio has or will be given such freedom from a creative perspective with Star Wars. And that's only because EA proved to Disney that they were successful and profitable when making Star Wars games with SWTOR and Battlefront. As long as Disney doesn't pull their license. EA will keep SWTOR running or re-master/launch it within another product like Final Fantasy XIV did with ARR.
I hope they do shut it down. That way, we can have another attempt at a fresh Star Wars MMO.
I don't think they would.
I don't see any western company making a high budget mmorpg for a very long time. Why would they? The chance of them making something that people will like (and I'm not talking about early star wars galaxies peeps) is just as iffy as any mmorpg.
People keep saying they wont make another Star Wars MMO..... That would actually be a terrible Business Decision by EA... they have thee MOST POPULAR IP in the world. they would have to be idiots not to make a better OPEN WORLD STAR WARS MMO that actually is good and i believe they can do it. Also I highly doubt anyone else can out bid EA for Disney's Star Wars gaming license.
Yeah but they can be making more money for less effort making other Star Wars games.
So why would they make an OPEN WORLD STAR WARS MMO because hardly any company is investing in large mmo's and just because they make an mmo doesn't mean "it will be good".
Remember, the people who made Star Wars the Old Republic thought they were making a good game. They thought they were doing a good job.
How much would an OPEN WORLD STAR WARS MMO actually cost to make? Millions upon millions with no guarantee that a fickle player base (let alone a fickle and demanding Star Wars fan base) would even like it.
heck, I saw the latest Star Wars movie and I really enjoyed it. It was fun. Yet there are so many people burnign forums because it wasn't the star wars movie they wanted or thought they deserved.
A new Star wars mmo isn't going to fare much better.

Even if they shut down SWTOR it is not like they are going to make another Star Wars MMORPG. It will be some MOBA or may be a battle arena or something or card game or an FPS.
WTF?!? WHY did the author even WRITE such a TRASH "article" in the first place, PUSHING all of this FUD all over us ("Fear, Uncertainty, Doubt")... if he was just going to end up with the "conclusion" that NO THE GAME IS NOT ENDING ANYTIME SOON! WHY even keep bringing this SAME DEAD HORSE UP, and then continuing to BEAT IT OVER AND OVER (the stupid persistent question that the game is "going to die") if you are going to reach the SAME CONCLUSION that EVERYONE ELSE ALREADY KNOWS???? NO IT IS NOT GOING TO DIE.... omg !!! I am SO SICK of hearing this!!!
I personally dont think that they shutdown the game. Perhaps they try to sell the game to an second hand publisher for a good price (like Nexon has doing that with Atlantica online to Valofe Company).

Beating the SwTor dead horse drum is a thing here. Its up there with every new mmorpg is going to be the wow killer.
I chalk it up to click bait to generate revenue. I will happily oblige and do my part.
My money is if that time comes it may end up at Perfect World Entertainment.
SWTOR is probably the best story based MMO out there, though honestly i don't think it would make much difference whether the game was an MMO or single player, its likely the last good RPG that Bioware was involved in making before they became all sjw and were sent into a death spiral.
I saw the post on FB from mmorpg.com - I thought SWTOR was shutting down but it's an analysis. I didn't catch that at first in the title. I can understand how people that still play SWTOR might get a little irritated by the title/post. Have there been other analysis articles in the past?
Original release was incredible adventure, enjoyed so much as very few other games, for some time was even best of all times for me for enjoyment factor .... now is just shadow, they have ruined best parts. Every single expansion was worse then previous, more movie than gameplay.
I am enjoying & love TOR but after one year lost interesting,I am back few times but not keep playing for long time, just was somehow bored Seems every mmo's slowly die but WoW continue to living
Enjoyed the various class stories/quests at launch. The FTP model leaves a lot to be desired and I moved on. I agree with some; it would be nice to see a new Star Wars MMO but I won't hold my breath.
Oh and I agree EA destroyed Bioware. They should consider a new tagline, "Destroyer of Studios."
EA took a hit regarding the lootbox fiasco...but they still planning on adding them to Anthem....talk about flogging a dead horse
Not much of a hit. Their stock has rebounded, it's higher than it was a year ago.
If it still hadn't recovered, it would be akin to a disaster.
If they receive the same kind of hit after Anthem releases for the same reason, I highly doubt stockholders or EA itself can attempt to ignore the pattern.

Yeah but it more than recovered.
You are correct, if the same thing happens that could be troubling. At the moment they are set to exceed expectations in 2018. So we'll see.

I disagree with Frenchie that it would have been a disaster. Look at their stock curve. It was too steep. This corrected the slope to where it was before last fall which was still rather decent. They have a long term strategy that investors apparently like. People like their games. Until that changes and they take huge revenue hits across franchises or some other large scale event happens it won't affect their stock price.
Well, it was pretty low so yeah, if it hadn't recovered that would have been an issue.
But it did and pretty quickly. If the same thing happens again, the players complain and it bounced back up that will pretty much mean that their complaints are tempests in tea pots.
If it happens again and it doesn't bounce back that mean they are going to have to rethink how they do things.
Personally I think they are tempests in tea pots.

Or he is thinking "Just five more minutes of this crap until Disney pays me $4,000,000,000.00 for Lucasfilms..."
And yes, that is 4 billion, with a b.
