If you have been asleep this past year, like me, then you are starting to understand the true power that is Player Unknown Battlegrounds. If you have been awake, and playing the game or any one of its friendly neighbors out there, then you understand this trend in gaming which has swept over pretty much all game styles in the last few months. Here are some thoughts as to why it is so popular.

“PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds leads the pack quickly followed by H1Z1 and Fortnite,...”

It’s not hard to lead the pack with a bar that low. H1Z1? Fort nite? lol

I'll pass. I don't give two craps about battle royale games. There's no story, no permanency. Just a bunch of a-holes running around trying to kill each other. Have fun.

This trend is not anymore powerful than all past trends. Mmorpgs, mmoARPG, Mobas, Hero shooters, online CCGs. They all became a trend and only a couple always stay afloat.

Battle Royale is the new trend and now everyone is hopping on that bandwagon until they start failing en masse and someone starts the new post-battleground trend.

The way to assess this trend is to think about how this will fit into other types of games and gaming. It can only be a PvP mode, it has no compatibility outside of that. A welcome addition to the stable, but this horse is not going to start a new stable on its own.

Not fun at all to me.
I only bought into H1Z1 thinking there was going to be some zombie action and lots of crafting building. All it became was the same as FortNite and PubG,a boring simple minded one trick pony.

    Tactics?VERY little
    Choice..VERY little
    Fun?I fail to see why

My take on why these are popular,>>>EASY,all the weaker pvp type players feel at ease knowing they can likely survive quite awhile and do not need any amazing skills to do well, same reason people like large battles,a weak pvp player can fit right in unnoticed.

I have to admit, I'm more interested in giving it a try (just to see if I can do something different) than I was before... but that's not saying much, as I wasn't really interested at all.

These games are popular because you can do well with luck and pretty much no skill. PUBG is notorious for how bad it runs and how you can get shot through walls or shots do not register, YT full of clips. I've won Fortnite games by simply AFKing in a hut and killing idiots that entered, only to move with the storm. If I was lucky, the hut was in the eye. If not, I got shot on the road. O by making a tower in the middle of the eye, again, shooting people passing by. PUBG is even worse.
In a game like OW or MOBAs you'd have to at least cooperate and have some sort of team goal, AND master that specific hero.
Here? Let's get carried by luck, sprinkled with some rudimentary shooter mechanics that barely work. Hell, Destiny 2, as bad as it might be considering it as a whole, when it comes to shooting, it's light years ahead of PUBG/Fortnite.
    Meh.

There is definitely something interesting and somewhat unique about the formula that gives you one life, one chance, starts you with nothing, and gives you 99 competitors vying for the same thing... with a mechanic the funnels you closer and closer to the remaining enemies, forcing you to move, to adapt, to fight.

Bad runs - where you die to something stupid fairly quickly are annoying, sure.

But good runs... with clutch saves and being that last person standing (or close to it) are great gaming moments.

First time I survived to the final circle in PUBG and was one on one for the win was an exhilarating gaming experience.

No, I didn't win - got killed because of my own inexperience with the controls!

Got into a car by accident trying to reload (tap X instead of hold X) and didn't know what button got out of the car lol.

The whole concept that there is no permanence and each match is different and all of that... I don't know, isn't it why people like Roguelikes?

Actually 100 enter 1 leaves would even work great for a WoW battleground, its an awesome idea... and the winner is king for a day

Best MMO experiences : EQ(PvE), DAoC(PvP), WoW(total package) LOTRO (worldfeel) GW2 (Artstyle and animations and worlddesign) SWTOR (Story immersion) TSW (story) ESO (character advancement)

I spent the weekend playing fortnite for the first time. I have never liked or even tried PUBG or H1Z1. I had a really good time. The randomness of each battle, the building cover and traps and riding rockets. So far I would give fortnite an 8/10 after I spent about 20 hours in it this weekend. It's light on content for free players, but it's incredibly fun.
