Star Citizen & SQ4 Roadmap (updated April 8th)

MaxBaconMaxBacon Member LegendaryPosts: 7,846
edited April 2021 in Star Citizen
Star Citizen has now posted on the site overhaul the new production roadmaps; the intent is to drop the feature-driven updates approach and lean towards a date-driven one. This means X or Y feature will not be imposing if it can't be done by X date, giving preference to release what they have implemented instead.

Roadmap: https://robertsspaceindustries.com/roadmap/

Alpha 3.13 is released. 3.14 is currently on Q2 2021 schedule.

A quick rundown on this roadmap:

There are 2 types.
  • the release view shows more of the committed features for that specific milestone.
  • the progress tracker shows everything that is being worked on via ongoing milestones that every team currently works on.

    I like the new site.

Optimization and polishing is great as long CIG doesn't refactor stuff again and have to re-optimize and re-polish everything again and again.

If your aim is to delay releasing a game so you can milk whales, then disregard the above.

    ..Cake..

"Internal schedules, the ones you will now be privy to, tend to have aggressive dates."

So, even with aggressive dates they still wont be done with the first full planetary system this year, as far as I can see.

    Food for thought...

Well hopefully things like network culling finally work out to release with 3.1 and start dictating the mitigation of that awful bad frames, they pushed the servers to 50 players per instance without it, so getting all other players independent of where only overwhelms more, the sooner that goes away the better.

Now now... The reclaimer ship? That thing is literally the size of the Idris, the landing pads ain't big enough hmm

So it'll probably be infinitely delayed.

The walk through videos of the Reclaimer, and Terrapin are going to be bad ass.
Looking forward to all the character creation videos also.

At least it's basically confirmed no SQ42 for 2018 because several of the ships needed for it aren't in the roadmap (SQ42's roadmap is intentionally missing, but the ships needed for it can be tracked).  I'm still amazed some people actually thought that was going to happen.  (given current rate of progress and that the Idris isn't even on the roadmap, 2019 would be highly unlikely for SQ42 either if CiG lasts that long)

If you compare the amount of stuff in this roadmap compared to what they were actually able to release last year, they're going to have to have some amazingly hefty refactored pipelines to even come close to pulling this off.

A more realistic estimate, going by their rate of progress last year and the fact that you ALWAYS have to tack on some extra delays to anything they announce, would probably be (a portion of) 3.2 by the end of the year.  ...maybe.

Could you please let us know what ships will be in SQ42 ?

And what would be your source for that information.

Consider that the Idris may not be on the roadmap because it is already finished.

Do you think the kickstarter backers would have made their donations if they had known that there will be a 2018 production roadmap?
I can only speak for myself - yes, i personally would have made the donation.

When they said switching to showing dates I didn't know they meant quarters.

Bugs get a low priority and a lot of them get pushed back to a later update.

Absolutely. They will have read up on "your" posts saying that the game isn't going to launch until 2050 .....

    More seriously:

The majority of people have pledged since the alpha released. Easy to forget I know and it may not fit the narrative but only a few people pledged at the start. Now has it been to long for them? Maybe. Although they will have been the most dedicated.

Most however will have seen - and maybe tried - the alpha during a free fly weekend say. (Its what people on this forum suggest!) And the experience will have informed their decision to do so - or not.

I think some STILL have not understood that 1000+ people join PER WEEK.

And these people know exactly the state Star Citizen is in at the moment. Plenty of gaming news reports about it.

I personally expect even more people to join after the official launch.

It helps to read the intro to this Roadmap:

    "Roadmap Caveats"

"Quality will always be our number one goal.

When we initially set out on this journey we looked out at the gaming landscape and asked: can we do better? We continue to ask that question about everything we do. As a result, we will ALWAYS extend timelines or re-do features and content if we do not feel they are up to our standards. The freedom to fight for a new level of quality in game development is what crowd funding has allowed us to do, and we will continue to fight to make sure Star Citizen and Squadron 42 are the best possible games they can be.

This roadmap focuses on big features, but is not fully exhaustive.

There are a lot of behind-the-scenes work and smaller tasks that will be happening as well as on-going improvements to existing features. This is also not intended to be a final list, there will potentially be additional features added down the line and features may shift in their projected release.

The roadmap data is pulled directly from the internal project management database.

In the spirit of transparency, the data found on this page is pulled directly from JIRA, our internal database that we are using to plan and manage the project. Feature progress and release plans will be updated here in an automated fashion, once per week.

Future work estimates are just that: estimates.

All estimates are based on our knowledge and experience but there are many aspects of game development that are impossible to predict because they literally cover uncharted territory. You will see the same estimates we use in our internal planning, but it is important to understand that in many cases (especially with groundbreaking engineering tasks) these estimates are often subject to change due to unforeseen complexity in implementing features.

Internal schedules, the ones you will now be privy to, tend to have aggressive dates.

This helps to help the team focus and scope their tasks, especially in the case of tech development. Every team needs target dates, so you may see dates adjust when we get more accurate information and understanding of what’s needed to be completed.

The polish phase is always hard to estimate, increasingly so in online and multiplayer situations.

The complexity and the difficulty in testing at a large scale make it harder to reproduce and isolate bugs to fix them. We base our estimates, again, on our experience, but we also know that it’s possible for a single bug to cause a delay of days or weeks when a hundred others might be fixed instantly.

This roadmap doesn’t cover everything being worked on across Cloud Imperium Games.

The roadmap is meant to highlight our aims for the remainder of the year on the Persistent Universe. Although technology is shared between the two games, this does not currently reflect the Squadron 42 roadmap.

    Terminology

The status of each Feature in the roadmap indicates where it is in the development process. Here is a handy list of terms used on each card and their meaning."

ScheduledThe feature is planned but not in development.
In DevelopmentThe feature is being actively developed.
PolishWork is complete and undergoing playtests and QA.
    CompletedThe feature is considered complete.
ShippedThe feature is shipped as part of a public release.
    " (Endquote)

As for SQ42 this year, I wouldn't think so, they have changed to start doing more dev updates in SQ42 but it feels SC getting new releases is what this year is about.
