Accurate review from my perspective. I enjoy it for what it is: more of a role-playing game than almost anything else I've played the past few years.

There's decorum expected in interactions with members of different classes, and your role within that society changes as you progress through quests and win the favor of nobles.

As for bugs and optimization, I've not found it any worse than a Bethesda release.

It seems really inconsistent. A lot of people are having issues but others aren't having any. It's buggy in more annoying ways than a Bethesda game, in my experience, but a lot of that is because it's mainly in dialogues for me.

Good review, unfortunately there's the "Bethesda effect" again. Many great reviewers like ACG are guilty of this. I searched MMORPG Fallout 4 review and this is what it says:

"POLISH – 7 | It’s a Bethesda RPG. One of the pitfalls of a huge open world RPG is that there’s no way to keep the bugs and glitches from rearing their heads. I never ran into crashes, but more than one time I’ve seen strange and weird animations and had awkward interactions with NPCs. I doubt time will fix these quirks either."

So Fallout 4 is an unpolished diamond but it gets 8.8 and the bugs are excused with "glitches are impossible to prevent in a huge open world RPG".

KCD is also an unpolished diamond but it gets 7.0. I wish reviewers didn't have double standard like this.

Yea it certainly seems hit or miss on the performance.

I'm on a 970, running high with draw distances almost at max or at max, and I've had stable FPS, with only noticeable dips being some indoor areas with complex lighting and shadows.

However, as you say, some folks with much beefier systems are experiencing more severe issues that don't seem to be resolved or even significantly improved by turning down some settings, as would be normal.

Worst bug I've encountered thus far was a fall through the world.  It lasted about 10-20 seconds before Henry reset to his original point, and I took no falling damage as is common with that bug in other games.

Good write up. It's interesting to see how people love or hate this game. I found your review informative and balanced.

This is one I'll skip for now and maybe pick it up on a someday sale. I have Mount and Blade and Skyrim and never play those, although they're not quite the same thing.
I think that's a fair assessment to make unless you just really like the idea of role-playing in a non-fantasy medieval setting.

Don't get me wrong, I believe it's an excellent game, but it's focused on that niche to a fault.

However, I would say that the sword-play alone is almost worth picking it up.  If Skyrim had this kind of sword-play, I'd still be playing it myself.

I think the inconsistency comes from consoles not being patched at the same level as PC. The xbox didn't have the day one patch until yesterday for example.

Buggy dialogues? It's the first time I hear someone having such an issue with the game. lol. I personally only got a few minor glitches here and there mostly tied to animations (I'm on PC).

I personally love this game. In its current state, I'd say yeah; it deserves a 7-8.

But once those bugs are fixed and the mod support starts rolling in, I could see this game being an easy 9 for me. Best game I've played in 2018 so far.

"Tedious loop" lol, that was one of the best and most moving intros to a game I have played for quite a while. The game actually loses a lot of that emotion after the intro, although it still has some great quests and the way npcs interact with you even outside quests can be interesting.

6-7 is pretty accurate I guess. I value performance a lot more hence I would have probably extracted another point for those drops to 20 fps on a 1080ti, that is INSULTING. You simply should never release a game in that state. Work harder and optimize, people fed you lots of money on Kickstarter and other platforms.

To make things worse, performance is not the only flaw, there's also the slow, prolonged combat, the boring dialogue, the bad acting, and the lack of magic (for me). I'm not playing an RPG to learn history. I have books for that. I rather prefer to shoot fireballs, choke people to death like Vader and kill dragons in a medieval RPG, instead of slapping a sword on some armored dude for 5 minutes.

The positives? Vavra is a dude that openly supported Gamergate and has a decent set of convictions. He deserves support for that. The game also looks decently and is a showcase for Cryengine. A 6 is all I can give for that though.

Just like I was saying recently about Gloria Victis, fantasy does not have to be high fantasy, spells, elves etc.

Historical fantasy is a great setting, obliviously you have to take liberties but these are games and as such have more than one priority.

Game has sold over a million right now and it doesnt seems to stop. Funny how all those with 1080 do seems to have a problem but for the plebs like us who dont have 600$ or more like 1200 now for a 1080... Game run excellent for me on my 1060! Quest too long? Must be a WoW player... They arent long enough for my taste! A 7? Nahh a 8 is probably more like it.

I love the game so far. Especially the combat system and how you can get immersed in your daily routine.
But I do recommend a save game mod (also because of the bugs) and you also need to know that to get rid of some of the tedium , certain perks come in very handy.

So you knew it was historical setting, with no magic, and you purchased it despite that being opposite of your tastes, and you expected that you would enjoy this game?

I give this review a 10/10. Very well written and matching my game experience.
Unfortunately the game currently only gets a 6/10 from me. And that is still generous as the main quest bugged for me.
So, I agree with the reviewer. Wait for patches or enjoy being tortured in a great medieval setting by modern bugs !

If they fix the bugs and its a BIG if because there are a lot. Could be the game of the year imo.

Whoa whoa whoa those are personal things.

The combat is awesome. Many people think that as well. But true... some do think it's boring.

lack of magic? Someone else said this and that's like saying "lack of laser guns". Different setting. I get that some people are drawn toward some settings more than others (I tend to "turn off" with post apocoalyptic & sci fi games) but to have an issue with something that was never to be there in the first place? That's all about you and you shouldn't have been playing the game in the first place.

Dialogue is not boring at all, The actors aren't that bad, some very good.

In the end, this game is not made for people like you. And that's a good thing as more games SHOULD be made for specific audiences.

Haven't played the game yet, and will once the bugs seem to be patched, but I am currently in the UK visiting castles and this game seems like one that I would like to play to itch my knight role play.
