Why hasn't a company taken the "classic UO" concept to the next level-Is it a Holy Grail?

I have to agree with TMcC .

Have a look at DarkFall, this could become the next UO.

Hmmm...never played UO because of the PK horror stories...but those of you here who think there is skill in a dozen experienced, well-equipped players stealing everything a newbie has is "risk vs reward", please explain?

I could see two equal level characters doing PvP, but experience in many games shows those many levels above the one they are killing is the norm...and it is nothing but griefing.

The must accept PvP is the best idea ever implemented and gets a lot more players to try a game.  I will not play a game that is PvP all the time (because of griefers who have no concept of rp, and hide behind the excuse of I'm a bandit, I must steal everyones everything.  If it was true rp, we could hunt you down and throw you in jail for 2-10 game years with no way to cancel your account until that time is over...then it "might" be risk vs reward.

I enjoy a good round of PvP, but only when I feel like it.  Other times I prefer to explore, and provided there are enough enviromental threats, there is still plenty of risk without griefers ruining your game...

  •  The "old school" UO will never ever be tried again, or duplicated because it has been proven to be a disaster from a buisness standpoint.

It is a shame all you UO fans never browsed the old official SWG forums. Back when Raph Koster (the guy behind the "old school" UO) posted why the original version of UO will never happen again, nor ever be duplicated.

You can visit his personal website where he touches on it.

    http://www.legendmud.org/raph/

The only MMORPGs that come close (but not all the way) to the "old school" UO are:

AO - PvP for land control. You kill other guilds and take over their land. Destroy their turrets, guns, robots, security systems. You also gain faction/guild points. Even when a guild logs off, they can set up automated guns, robots, security systems, to guard their land.

SWG - Technically UO2. (a game also made by Raph Koster). SWG is almost there to perfecting the PvP system in the "Old School" UO. In SWG's PvP no player is safe anywhere! Not in cities, hospitials, no where! You can kill anyone anywhere! Of course you can only fight and slay other PvP players who on purpose wish to do the same to you aka overt PvPers. Newbies, and non-PvPers simply do not join the Imperials or Rebels and do not declare overt. This takes care of the age old problem of "The miner vs the warrior" aka a player who invests in non combat skills will NEVER have a chance vs a player who invests in combat skills aka "The miner vs the warrior" problem.

The last thing SWG needs to do is have what AO has. PvP for a reason. Landcontrol for a prime example. Then PvP in SWG will be complete. Blame George Lucas for this.

DAoC - PvP for "semi-weak" landcontrol. They are called keeps. The only problem in DAoC is that the PvP is not done right. You just wait for the enemy guild to log off and easily retake the keep.

    Just another AMEN!!

A world without risk is a world without fun!

Adventuring around in UO as a newbie was the most exciting gaming I ever had. You could never know what would happend next and nothing was safe. Playing as a PK, a NOTO and just plain PvP was also the best I ever saw in the games I played. It was so much fun and god knows that in the early days I swore never to become a PK, Looter, notoPK and in the end I loved being one.

To have enemies just adds up on the fun factor! I am so tired of playing in safe worlds where everybody is friends and all day long they just kill mobs to get better and richer. Where is the dynamics in that? Then they finaly go out to some PvP "Arena" and kill some "enemies" in controlled wars leaving small room for surprises. And the big differens is that everybody choose to go to the "dangerous" places, the danger is never brought to them by acts of other players.

I really hope Darkfall picks it up!

classic uo is but a faint dream for most of us now. We all have grown up gotten jobs married ect. Everyone trys to emmulate the carebear games now. Players are weak and lazy. I sit on boards looking at new games and hopeing something decent with pvp will come out that resembles UO. Its not gonna happen 8( Dont buy into wish claims its a trammy Uo. Not a classic uo and why we left. Darkfall Vwed on us. Only game semi promiseing is Mourning.

I also tried shadowbane but sbexe finnaly got me to quit after 6 months playing it. Only good thing about that game was i found a clan and will be with them till i quit gameing and maybe even longer after that.

Don't be such a DORK.  We all started out as newbies and we all died to someone better.  The fun part of the game was to get up dust off your skin and get back into training.  When i first played the game i got my ass kicked every friggin day and night.  Kool thing was i would go out with my newbie dagger gain a few points b4 i died. Before long i was pking the pkers and killing the newbs so they could pass the "rite of passage".  In UO you had to EARN your status.  Thats what made it great.  No room in UO for trammies.  Siege Perilous was the greatest thing since toilet paper.

In response to all the people that say trammel was a good idea because of it sucking to die and lose all you stuff..... Perhaps they should take out the monsters too... afterall it sux when you die and lose your shit lol

Maybe this has been brought up already, didn't have time to go through the entire thread.  I've been playing IPY now for about four months and I love it.  It's (for the most part) Pre UO:R Ultima with some newer stuff thrown in (potion kegs, commodity deeds).  Peak hours usually see about 600 players.  If you thought you were good at UO PVP this is definitely a place for you to find some challenging fights.  There is a new player program designed to get new players on their feet, and for the next 5 days or so skill gains have been increased slightly to help new players.
