Good short-term mmorpg?

After a long hibernation away from computer games, I think I'm ready to jump back into a game. The thing is, I can't play when I go back to school, which is in about a month.
So, this is kind of a weird question, but I wanted to know what might be the funnest mmorpg to play only for a short while?
I expect to get something like 50-100 hours of gameplay.
I was considering city of heroes most, but I'm open to suggestions. Maybe not even a mmorpg, although I feel kind of in the mood for one. Past favorite games have been age of empires, counter-strike, everquest, shattered galaxies....

thanks for the advice :)

Since you'll only be playing for a month, why not try Anarchy Online?  It is free and it should keep you busy for a month.  Kind of a steep learning curve though and truthfully, I didn't find it much fun even once I did understand most of it.

If you don't mind paying a $10 subscription fee, you might want to try NexusTK (www.nexustk.com) or Dark Ages (www.darkages.com).  You can buy a one-month subscription with no auto-renewal and the software is a free download.  Both are pretty simplistic 2D anime-type games, but are easy to jump into and are fun.  Choose Dark Ages if you like serious role-playing, but if not, choose NexusTK.  Dark Ages folks can be a pain when it comes to roleplaying.

Only by technicality. Guild Wars decided to brand themselves as a CORPG simply because they did not want to associate themselves with the usual tedious falicies of ordinary MMORPGs, and in doing so create a unique image for the game.

The only real difference GW has is its instanced questing. Hell the fact that MMORPG.com has a forum for GW emphasizes how GW is universally accepted as being the MMORPG genre.

Furthermore, doobster's suggestion of GW was probably a really good one considering that the game places more emphasis on player skill, which usually results in less time consumption, something the thread start cannot afford.

Whether Guild Wars is a MMO or not has been argued OVER and OVER and OVER here.  I myself and really sick of that argument.  I wish it would just go away.

Try World of Warcraft. It's more than 100 hours, but in a month you can get through a lot of the content in any case because it is a very fast paced game.

Umm, he stated in his post that it didnt need to be a mmorpg.  Thanks for your attempt to troll though.

Getting off the mmorpg track here but I would recommend Rome:Total War if you're into that sort of thing.  It can certainly suck you in for a few weeks!

Any of what I call the ADD MMO games would work for you.

From what I can tell, you are looking for something that is fun to play but won't feel like a loss of investment when you aren't able to play.  ADD MMOs do just that.  You can play for a short time and then leave the game with a sense of accomplishment and no guilt. :)  Or something very casual.

City of Heroes (ADD: Probably the best example of this type of game)
    WoW (before level 30) (ADD)
    Matrix (ADD)
    Eve (casual)
    AO (Free)
Auto Assault (2 Day a Week BETA, but this would fit the bill (I think I am turning into a NCSoft fanboy))

If you are going to play 100 hours, you could probably play ANY MMO and feel ok about it.

*EDIT*: I noticed it didn't have to be a MMO and you played CS.  Battlefield 2 is an outstanding game (they are working on the network tweaks), has persistant character stats and unlockable weapons.  If you are up for an FPS, that one could keep you busy.  They are also working on a Special Ops expansion.

    Anyway... There is my .02

Wow, holy crap it's not? I didn't know that? Jesus christ you should send this to every newspaper in the world to spread the news that GW isn't an MMO!

Thanks for all the replies, you guys are really helpful :)

I basically have exactly one month to play.
What draws me to CoH is that most all of the reviews I've read describe it as a game that's fun as hell for a while, but then gets boring. That's no problem by me, I NEED it to get boring after a while ;).
What scares me away from WoW is everyone I know who plays it has turned into a zombie.... that's gonna be hard to leavea fter a month. Plus it strikes me as the type of game that only gets *really* fun after a significant time investment.

Also, this may turn into a game I play during vacations, but I don't want to have to pay for it while I'm not playing it. So, which of these games will delete my account the moment I stop paying, and which will let me reactivate after a couple months with no problem?

What I really am looking for is a game that's fun to play from the get-go. Not a steep learning curve, gets-fun-after-level-30 game.

Right now I'm considering CoH and Guild Wars (but I should read up more on the latter). Maybe also Nexus. I'm still looking into other games that have been recommended.

    PS: What's ADD mean?

I got bored of WoW 3 times now im just not the type to get addicted for very long tho and I usually played for about a month each time. Althought most people arent like me so bad choice unless u want ur life to be ruined :P.

I strongly recommend Guild Wars. With good time into it you can get to max level on a roleplaying character in a week or two and get into the good stuff. By the time ur month is up it will proably be boring if not easy to leave.

CoH ... IMO bad choice. You will proably get bored by the month is ended or sooner but you wont feel accomplished. Most likely you will be level 20 (unless they made leveling easier since last I played) which isnt anything u can brag about considering there are like 50 levels.

Id give guild wars a shot especially because not only is it good but no monthly fee.

Try Guild Wars. Good game, might take a while to get you sinked in, maybe an hour of playing lol but it's coo...you can class it as a CORPG or an MMORPG depending if you choose the Roleplay side of the game or the PVP Side...Roleplay is still an MMORPG but it also has a story-line too it including cut-scenes so yeah! ^.^

The more I read up on Guild Wars the more I like it.

However, there's one thing holding me back. It seems like it would play alot like DiabloII. I got bored of that game pretty quickly, because I didn't like the way the whole thing felt like a repetitive "keep fighting monsters nonstop to level up in the same quests over and over again" grind.
What I really DID like, however, was planning my characters (what skills I would learn, etc.), all even before I would create a character.
I guess you could say character development/planning is my favorite part of RPGs.
    Can Guild Wars satisfy that?

Also, will GW delete my acct if I don't log in for several months?

    Thx for the advice

The best short-term RPG, because they designed it that way, so you can hit max level in a frankly amazingly short time--- World of Warcraft. Hands down. And that's casual playing.

  • spydermr2spydermr2 Member Posts: 336

Jigwit: I think he was using ADD to refer to Advanced Dungeon and Dragons (AD&D).

  • ViolentYViolentY Member Posts: 1,458

Um... actually I think he means "Attention Deficit Disorder." Meaning, it's a game you can play for a short time before going on to something else, ie what the original poster was looking for.

For only 50-100 hours of gameplay, I'd just reccomend a console game. Maybe an FPS you can get into, or try some console RPGs. What systems do you have?

if you dumped a lot of time into it, you could probably get bored of CoH by the time the 14-day trial is done.
I wouldn't reccomend AO, since it is a sharp learning curve. I've heard World of Warcraft gets dull after a while, but my friend has been playing it 3+ months and he's still a zombie, once turned down a party for a guild meeting, etc . ::::16:: I can't really comment on GW since I just played beta, but it seems to fit the bill for what you want (though I totally hate it for being #1 on MMORPG.COM, that's ridiculous)

Best short-term MMORPG would be World Of Warcraft, You'll have a blast for a month or two and then it just becomes boring and repetative.
