As a college student majoring in Communication, I spend a lot of time learning what to say, what not to say, and how to say it. Although there are countless theories that carefully explain how to communicate effectively, truthfully, I think most of it should be common sense. Yet, I look around gaming communities and find that most of these unspoken "rules" are thrown out.

Good or bad - what you say can resonate for a very long time.

If only more people realized just this, let alone everything else..

How wonderful running into such an insightful article, and even more amazing is that it's so short to be read on a whim and can apply to practically everything in life, not just gaming.

I guess that college tuition is paying off, eh?

I agree 100%. It's an amazing article. If only more people thought about the consequences and fallout from their words, both written and spoken.

    Great advice. Enjoyed the article.

This is stuff that we internalize at work every day. Sadly, I just don't see a good many gamers adopting these practices.

Mythdust, is that the authors real surname? If it is, that's a really cool surname. :)

    Good article also!

Nope, it's a nom de plume. Vanessa ordinarily writes Wizard101 specific columns, but this one was so good, we wanted it to see a broader audience. A lot of folks might've missed it otherwise!

I clicked this article thinking that there was going to be a poll. :P

In my experience, lately, I have run into people that cannot take handle the slightest criticism. We live in a narcissistic culture, many have been softened by social media outlets, particularly Facebook, and are being influenced by others through the like button. It's quite frustrating for a person like myself; I'm very direct, people get quite offended by this. I've learned that you cannot please everyone, even if you are mindful of your words.

I'm not speaking about mmorpg.com. I actually agree with many of the comments here, but I do get into heated discussions elsewhere, by people who cannot handle an opinion that is different from theirs.

Everyone has an opinion, and its only by sharing them that we really communicate, i think the problem these days is that some people take offence far too easily and think that because they feel offended that someone has an opinion they don't agree with, that it somehow makes that opinion wrong.
Realistically speaking, no matter what opinion you have on pretty much any subject, someone is likely to disagree with it in some manner, but its only by discussing these things rather than stepping on egg shells and avoiding saying things because someone might take offence, that any kind of progress can even be made.
So state your opinion and don't worry if some might be offended, someone always is after all, as long as you are prepared to debate that opinion then its all good.

The thing is, there are ways to give criticism, ways to present different opinions that will actually get results.

That's sort of the point of the article.

In life, anywhere in life you have some choices. You could say "I'm direct and people can't handle it".

    Great!

Now what is it you wanted to accomplish? Did you just want to make your opinion heard and then move on? Or did you want to present your opinion and have it considered as an idea that has merit? An alternate but viable opinion.

Because the first one is easy. It's not necessarily going to get you anywhere with the other party if they don't communicate in the same way. I can be blunt/direct all day but that's not going to get me anything other than people knowing where I stand.

The second one on the other hand ... that is more about understanding how people communicate.

So if you just want to trumpet your stance on a subject go ahead, they'll know what you are about. But, if you want to actually change people's minds or at least get them to realize that you have a stance that should be considered, then you are going to have to learn how people communicate. And that is a challenge for everyone!

I've gotten banks to reimburse me money that I claimed was deposited but they couldn't find, I've gotten utility companies to grant me service that they initially did not want to grant and have calmed arguments at laundromats where the two parties thought each other was trying to take advantage of each other, only to have both parties end up being "all so helpful" to each other.

All depends on what you want to accomplish.

2 vip quotes here that I love:

"If you wouldn't say something to someone IRL, it's probably not a good idea to say it online."

    and

"Believing that what they say on the Internet will have no repercussions, people say things that I don't think they would IRL. I call it "keyboard courage." "

I really have to stay away from YouTube comment sections because of these things. People say the nastiest, racist, sexist, most offensive etc things they can come up with behind the idea of having "keyboard courage". They know nobody will ever see them say it, and they can get away with it. They wouldn't dare ever say it to your face.

I wish there was a system where people had to post their real information before posting. Like a ID code or a real life picture so the world knows who it is that is saying these things. Great article but Sadly the bs is going to continue.. I really wish it wasn't that way, thats the price we have to pay for having something as incredible as the internet.

I think our only hope for a better internet is a system like they have in Overwatch. When you type "gg ez" is automatically replaces it with a random line like "I'm wrestling with some insecurity issues in my life but thank you all for playing with me."

The afterlife in "The Good Place" has that too.

Great article. It's not just Gamers though, or even the internet. Society in general is more crude and rude and uncaring of others' views -- not that that stuff hasn't always been around, and worse in some ways, but it's more open and widespread now.

I'm all for "not walking on eggshells" and not being Politically Correct and all that, but apparently some people, even here, think they're "just like that" when it comes to writing or saying things that are truly nasty, and expect everyone else to put up with it or put them on /ignore -- which is great in forums that have it, but can missing out on important or interesting stuff just because you "can't help yourself" and tone down your venomous or filthy language.

I have found, however, there are also some people who may be very nasty towards nasty people, but when I converse with consideration, they will return the favor. We need more of that, and less of those who, when faced with solid arguments, try to "win" by becoming more vile and toxic.

I want to chime in here, because I absolutely will fight fire with fire sometimes.  If somebody is trolling, I usually feel it's best to merely troll them back until they realize you're not buying the bait, but merely wasting their time.

However, I will second that simply going on a rage and shouting obscenities at one another is never helpful in getting anywhere or debating.  Those types of things spiral quickly, and the folks involved usually aren't merely trying to get a rise for gigs, but have gotten their own strong emotions involved at that point.

However one sided the article is it does NOT mention how you can also cause the same harm by lying and being misleading just to say those words in a "business like fashion".

First of all,i prefer an honest and straight forward person,if all some want to hear is FAKE lies or pampering without just, then they really should live in a bubble because those people to me don't want to be human they want to be special.

Ho you talk to your boss is NOT how you really want to talk to them,if you feel ripped off or mislead or treated unfairly or underpaid, you approach the conversation not as a straight forward honest person like you would talk to your friend but more in a business like approach.

Along the same lines, this site operates like a business, they want customers, they won't tell the customers their product stinks because they want their business, that is being deceitful and deceptive and NOT honest. You see that is how the real world is,NOT all honesty a massive amount of deceptive conversations.

MOST people don't want to hear the truth unless it is pampering, they want to be told what a great job they are doing even if not doing a great job.

Now i will tell you how you hurt others by being that deceptive person and NOT being straight forward.Sure you can lie and attain some sort of agenda but using games as an example,if all the websites do is kiss ass of developers because they are all in it together, then gamer's never win, they keep getting trashy games because  the media keeps telling devs their games/products are great.

Remember there are laws being added all the time to the internet and gaming industry, why is that, well because people cannot be trusted. When i say people,i mean people on BOTH sides of the fence.

You don't read youtube comments, correct?  That's the solution.   Getting everyone to adjust their comments to make you comfortable ... sorry, not a good solution.  I should not have to censor myself to make you comfortable.  Now, you're welcome to disagree with me, but you will be wrong every time you do.

SBFord probably felt proud of herself when she essentially said in then other thread that if you can't take the heat then get out of the fire, so I'll just piggy back on her sentiment here.  The most sensitive people on the internet should not get to set the standard for people who want to have honest, unfiltered discussion.  The internet is not your safe place and I hope it never is.
I don't understand your energy here but let me say that I never asked for the internet to be a safe place for anyone, read my post again. (I personally hate that term "safe space") and I never said censor yourself to make me comfortable. Stop trying to twist my words to fit whatever narrative you are trying to come up with.

Lets get that out the way.

Now..Why are you chalking this up to "emotional" people? Dude what?

This has nothing to do with being sensitive and everything to do with acting how you would in real life. In real life, not online life. My point is YT and other forums esp in gaming are filled with people who use these platforms to spread their hate and bigotry. A lot of times they don't even mean it but they think its cool to say or edgy. They want to be cool and get likes. It's still hate speech that is being spread. Are you saying you are okay with hate speech and bigotry? Because I'm not. Most people are not. That's not being sensitive, its called being offended at bigotry as most people would be.

There is a difference between hateful and honest commentary. Saying "I don't like the black panther movie" is honest commentary. You don't like it fair enough.

Saying "I hope all these (Nwords) die soon.. why would marvel give these monkeys a movie" is hate speech. (Real comment on YT btw)

Do you not know the difference? or are you one of those people? Asking because your post sounds like you are defending something.. again.. I'm confused.

Telling me to "not read" the comments on a website that I happen to enjoy, isn't solving anything. That does not stop the issue just because -I- personally didn't read it. What about the other human beings who did see it? Are they all supposed to follow your rule and just not read comments?

I said I personally choose not to read them.. you didn't need to tell ME that. I was already stating why I don't. Again, I avoid places like YT comments personally because of people who have found the keyboard courage to constantly say things that are racist, sexist, and hateful just because they want an upvote.  I'm never looking for it, but I would always see it.  Is that an issue for you?

I know for a fact most of them would never say it to the person's face and that's what annoying. They don't even feel that way. It's just for online show.

wtf are you talking about getting out the fire for? Dog it's YT.. I didn't go to YT to get offended my dude, I'm trying to figure out if my build is working right or when the next xpac is coming out.

I love your posts, but tactfully is for the workplace.  It's not for YouTube.

The root of my point on all of this is that people who get offended on the internet should take ownership of their own feelings because the internet is not going to change to make them feel more comfortable.  And more importantly, it SHOULDN'T change to make them feel more comfortable.  And fuck us all if it ever does; the emo folks will eventually rue the day.
I do my best to be as tactful online as I am in real life, my "persona" does not differ much between here, work, in Eve or even in church.

Sure I might let go a little bit more here, but I see no value to aggravating others too much regardless of venue, especially if trying to get them to understand my point.

To answer your question, yes:  I'm okay with "hate speech" because "hate speech" is a bullshit term.  It's just speech that some people don't like.  I'm also okay with bigotry.  Because again, that's just opinions that some people don't like.  I do not consider myself a bigot, nor do I spout what would be commonly considered "hate speech".  But do I think people should be prohibited from being bigots or expressing hate speech?  Fuck no, I don't.

Do you understand what the word "freedom" means?  Freedom comes with a price.  Some people get offended.  Oh well.  The price for you being comfortable on youtube is a price our society should not have to pay.  You're welcome to disagree.

Hate speech is a lot more than a "bullshit term" its BS to you because it doesn't directly affect you. I always found it funny how some people are unable to understand things that don't affect them directly.

Trust me I know all about Freedom. I served in the US military (USMC) for 8 years of my life.

This isn't about freedom it's about common decency and having a moral compass. Sadly a lot of people online lack it. I really hate when people try to use the word "Freedom" as a way/means to say or do whatever the hell they want to. Words and actions matter and should come with consequences. Sadly online they mostly don't.

You are also -FREE- to rob the bank, go on a killing spree and rape babies. Most people wouldn't do those things, but they are free to do so. You don't know a damn thing about freedom if you think you can use it to do whatever the hell you want with no moral compass.

Bigotry isn't "just an opinion that some people don't like." An opinion some people don't like is maybe "Micheal Jackson is the best musician to ever live." According to you, that's bigotry? smh tf?

People are free to say what they want yes, but there should be consequences for your words, the same way there are consequences for the actions that you are also free to do.

Edit: you can't use the word freedom without considering the word consequences.

Sorry, I don't agree with you.  A comedian in the U.K. just went to jail for offending people with a Nazi joke.  It was a fucking joke and he's going to jail.  Look it up.  And you are conflating actual criminal acts with "hate speech".  The fact you feel they are even comparable is quite frightening.  A person making a bigoted statement is not the same as robbing a bank.

Hate speech is bullshit.  It's speech that you don't like.  Just because you don't like it doesn't mean it should be punishable.  Get over it, move on.  It's your problem, not anyone else's.  And I am truly sorry if you don't agree with me, but that's not my problem and I will do everything I can to make sure you don't make it MY problem in the US.  I don't want anyone I know to end up in jail just because you feel offended.
Nope, you are dead wrong. Words can be weaponized and used against others.  There is a correlation between criminals and hate speech as most of those criminals are involved at some level in hate culture. Racism, Sexism, Hate against LGBT communities. A lot of mass shootings in America come from these hate-filled groups. WTF are you talking about? There is a huge correlation.

I never said the crimes are equal. You said you are okay with hate/bigotry because of Freedom.

I was telling you that freedom has nothing to do with saying what you want and doing what you want without a moral compass. The reason I brought up the crimes is to prove that even though you have -freedom- to do those things you wouldn't. Same thing with words. You should know what to not say. You know what not to DO right? Same thing with words.

It's Amazing. You are chalking up years of suffrage to just simple "speech you don't like". You also really think words don't have power and should not be looked at as a criminal. I don't know about that isolated incident you are pointing at in the UK but you are really lacking knowledge in so many areas based on your train of thought.

Did you know the President of the US is under investigation for *words* he may or may not have spoken?

Did you know people go to prison for lies (*Words*)

Did you know a few months ago some kid went to jail for calling the police (*words*) to get another guy "Swatted"?

Words hold weight and online seems to be the only place in society where people can get away with using words as a weapon and it's only because they can hide behind being anonymous.

I don't whats up with all that passive aggressive shit you on telling me to move on as if I'm stuck Nah dog I'm good, I don't need to move on from shit. You need to move on from thinking its okay and acceptable to be a bigot. Saying "I'm not a bigot but bigotry and hate is fine with me" isn't making you less of a bigot than they are. You are a supporter. You are just as fucked up.

My point is and always has been, words can be weaponized and are weaponized on the internet and there should be consequences for it. You may be cool with bigotry and hate speech but most of the world isn't. I think we should help most of the world have a hate-free as all possible reality.

Trust me, you are for sure part of the minority of thinkers with that "bigotry is cool with me" train of thought.

I think it's ironic how people defend hate speech spitting "safe space" as an offense when they are the ones that need this online safe space to practice their hate speech to begin with, because they wouldn't be able to act the same in real life.
Except, Charlottesville, Virginia last August 2017.  "Hate speech" isn't limited to the internet by any means, nor does it need the internet.

I think it's ironic that people use invalid points to defend their vacuous position.
So why is it on the internet? If it doesn't need it?  I mean I guess they could snail mail their hateful comments to youtube HQ  I guess? It's not like the internet isn't an instant communication tool.
Wow, I didn't know you were this ignorant.

Those idiots in Virginia are the same type of people hiding online.. or do you not get this?

What do you think... its different for them because they marched somewhere? lol, Jesus...

    SMH.

I hope you never run for office, but unfortunately people like you are already there in some countries:

    http://www.bbc.com/news/uk-scotland-glasgow-west-43478925

Bro, what does that have to do with what I said?  Did you read it or just reply? Serious Question.

Is this happening at an alarming rate? Please point me to where lots of Comedians are getting arrested for making a joke? Where else is this happening? That's your reason for wanting bigotry/hate speech to be accepted because "Free Speech?" .. UK Comedians are being arrested for making Nazi references? haha WHAT? LMFAO..

I've seen this before.. this tactic you are using is old, it's called cherrypicking. Not going to work
