Lord of the Rings Online News - Matt Elliott has posted a new blog on the Lord of the Rings Online forum to inform readers that he and his team have started working on a variety of polish passes over some of the game's oldest areas. Breeland has been updated with "newer, better looking textures", new waterways and polished water materials alongside more detailed assets being used for trees and "a few small surprises...to keep things interesting".

Nice, but why?  A graphic overhaul isn't likely to bring in new players at this stage.  Does Daybreak know what these guys are doing?

Daybreak has bigger concerns than worrying how Standing Stone chooses to distribute their finances and labor assets.

It might not bring new players but it certainly could lure former players.

As Suzie's post shows, it is not just a graphic overhaul, but a pretty wide class overhaul as well. I'd prefer if they would leave the classes alone and only do the graphics and the bugfixes, but we'll see how the classes end up after the changes.

edit: a note for the downloaders like Spock, it is not in the game yet, just on Bullroarer, and they are waiting for the feedbacks at the moment. It won't reach the live servers for several weeks, maybe a month even.

True.  But rather than polishing parts of an older system (graphics updates and class revamps), if I'm Daybreak, I'd be worried about increasing revenue.  My guess is that Standing Stone has a few idle graphics artists.  More costumes for the cash shop would make more financial sense.

If SS has more talent idle than just graphics artists, maybe they should be working on developing a new game based on the functionality of LotRO, but with a new IP.  Sick these guys on the proverbial EQ3 (or should it be EQ4 by now?).  That would make more long-term sense for both SS and Daybreak.  More things to sell, and all that.

Certainly it would help Daybreak distinguish themselves as something more than a retirement home for MMORPGs.

But that's all part of it.

First off that's what graphics artists do, they work on graphics/textures and of course any new assets.

Keeping an old game looking fresh is going to help keep it relevant (or at least more relevant) to players inclined to play it. How many times do we see some game in development only to have several people say "well, it looks like 1999" (and more often than not they are way off base and it doesn't look like the year they list).

If they want to retain and even attract a few players, they are going to have to make sure the game doesn't look too dated.

Making a few costumes for the shop (and I agree they could do much better with this) isn't going to keep graphics designers employed. Especially they way they seem to do it which is to recolor/retexture some assets.

Man, I'd pay an arm and a leg to play a Lotro 2. Unfortunately, I've invested all the time I plan to into Lotro after the disastrous decline it had many years ago.

What decline is that? My wife has been playing it steadily since 2009. Somehow she must have missed the "disastrous decline".

I'll be back the day they modernise/overhaul the UI. I think it still looks pretty good and although they have completely gutted the original LM it is still well worth playing.

Because the current community cares about this kind of thing. Do you really think a game this old is going to survive off new players or keeping current and bringing back veterans?

Pretty sure he means when the game went free to play as most people I know including me lost interest at that point and ever since you see chat outbursts of the barren like which during sub wasn’t there. Community during sub was stellar and best I’ve seen in any mmorpg you can’t say the same after free to play.

While it was a lot better back then, I still remember times I'd shut down Global cuz someone was off on a rant.

Actually the abysmal graphics is what is keeping me away from this game, so if they could make it better maybe i will consider giving this game a serious try.

LoL Theybreak is just the publisher you act as if they have any say in game development, can't even keep there own house in order, you think they have time mess with someone's house who is actually better organized then them?

Yet another game who can't do the Hunter class justice with NON plausible ideas and the players who THINK that is ok because well, selfish reasons.

keyword >>>>AMMO.Yes i know ideas like shooting multiple arrows is sort of non realistic but not really,it is at least a PLAUSIBLE idea but having no ammo at all,is just dumb and LAZY game design.
This very small effort in updating textures is i believe as someone mentioned, just a couple artists sitting idle so they put them to work and wanted the positive press news.

    @Mendel

SSG own and operate LotR. SSG employ DBG for "publishing". DBG have no "involvement" in LotR.

An analogy. You hire an electrician say to do some work on your house. I post that its a good job the electrician is doing up the house so they can sell / rent it out at a higher price. You say: wtf its my house!

See how stupid my post would be? Same deal.

DBG are just a "hired hand".

When Turbine ran LotR some stuff was provided by WarnerBros - such as publishing. When WarnerBros set up SSG and cast them adrift they replaced the services they provided. For publishing they did this by contracting with DBG.

You do understand that Daybreak only publishes Standing Stone games, they do not own them.

Expensive, outdated game with many flaws and issues. Instead of reworking zones, they should fix their horrible map design and how quests appear on it, they should also reduce prices and be less stingy about this game. Too expensive and too little to offer, I suggest diehard fans of Middle Earth to just grind, don't give them money, they don't deserve it.

Get a much better and cheaper game - The Elder Scrolls Online, aside from buying chapters they do events where you can trial being a subscriber for a week (no strings attached) and during this time you have unlimited access to all DLCs. Now that's what I call generosity.
Strictly your opinion.  Sounds to me like you never spent much time in the game.  I have two accounts that have all the areas and I never spent a dime on any DLC from the store beyond occasionally subbing.  Just playing the game provides what you need.  As to your many flaws and issues, I call bunk!
