Don't use Steam to purchase a MMO.

OzmodanOzmodan Member EpicPosts: 9,726
Case in point.  Elder Scrolls Online has an issue with Steam most of the day on Saturday and none of those accounts can login through Steam.  An account purchased outside of Steam works just fine.

Pretty much done with Steam after this, Valve can't seem to fix a simple handshake problem with Zenimax.  Last time I ever get a MMO through Steam.

One case and point doesn't mean every MMORPG purchases through Steam will have problems.

Well actually YES they CAN or might. It is because they use a shell system to lock you in,meaning you must use the Steam app and if that fails which i have had happen several times, they will not help you, instead>>>>ask the game developer NOT US.
So even though the game runs fine outside of Steam, they still try and claim it is not Steam but the game developers problem.

It goes beyond mmo's as well i had an issue with UT99 where i could not utilize the Editor to save files.I tired several times to make Steam understand that there is ZERO problems with the editor outside of Steam but they simply don't care and will ignore you.
Steam is raking in the bucks because they have almost no customer support,a VERY shallow system that is simply like buying a chocolate bar from a vending machine.

This is not the first MMO steam has had issues with.  Letting Steam choose your account name and password is a good way to lose control of your personal account.   If you put any time into a game that is playing with fire.

I would never buy an MMO on Steam unless it was the only place it is sold, and even then I would question why lol

I bought The Secret World on Steam and never had any issues, but that was years ago and I moved on after only 60 hours or so. As much as I loved their investigation quests and the Lovecraftian setting, I never felt the need to check it out again.

But yeah, as large as my Steam library has grown because of sales, for MMOs I'll always prefer to buy straight from the publisher and open an account the old-fashioned way.

I played Marvel Heroes regularly through Steam.  I played quite a few other MMO's as well (PoE, etc).  Just because they made you unhappy one time... doesn't make it a pattern.

MMO's I've played on my Steam:
    Age of Conan
    Ark
    AXYOS
    Battleborn
    BDO
    DDO
    DOFUS
    DOTA2
    Elite Dangerous
    ESO
    Marvel Heroes
    Minion Masters
    Neverwinter
    Path of Exile
    Portal Knights
    Rift
    Secret World
    Trove
    Warframe
    World of Diving

(we could argue if a few of those are MMO's but you clearly see my point)

Edit:  Added even more games, now that I'm looking closely I've played a butt ton through Steam.

Did you know that you can log into ESO without steam even if you've bought it through steam? All you need to do is create a shortcut for the launcher and it'll boot up just fine. That's how I've played ESO on and off for a year and my steam timer still says I've only played for 21 hrs. You can do the same thing for several games, such as Tera and a few others I forgot about.

Edit: actually I think what's happening for my ESO is that I took the files from an old pc and moved them to a new one but steam on the new pc didn't recognize them so I created the shortcut and played the game that way without steam even knowing it was "installed." So take what you want from that info. I know the shortcut "trick" for Tera allows you to log into multiple counts outside of your "steam default one" so there's that.

I was having trouble running warframe from steam. Went into the folder and ran the launcher.exe as an admin, did you try that?

I've never had any issues playing MMO's through Steam.  The Steam version has sometimes worked better.

Can't you just start it manually in Windows explorer? Steam do mess up some games for me and that usually works.

I buy MMOs directly from the company making them myself but since I am a bit lazy I tend to buy regular games from steam.

    Yeah... No.
Never base your habits on some random stranger's anecdote from the internet which they provide with a "never should you xyz" imperative.

Oh and btw, Steam is the best thing to happen to PC gaming.
I've bought an awful lot of games through Steam because of their low sale prices, but I've always found it odd that PC gamers embrace Valve so warmly when all they essentially do is run an online store/social network that is the mother of all DRM. Gabe Newell created a closed platform for a market that generally hates closed platforms, and made $5.5 billion off it. Seriously, the guy is 50% richer than Trump. Personally, I hope they're secretly working on Half-Life 3 and Portal 3 on a new engine that isn't Source, so we can consider them a creative company again and not just a global overlord.

I have not used Steam for an MMORPG I do use it for multiplayer games like Path of Exile, oh wait I just remembered I played Tree of Saviour on it. So I have played an MMO on Steam . I did not encounter any issues.

I prefer steam.  Easy to use; my games are in one location;  I can delete and reinstall from a central place; forums and other info easy.....

Games without steam have issues periodically.

I use GOG and Steam and I have games in both these platforms. I support GOG because they deserve my support too and I don't want Steam to keep all my games.

I dislike Steam anyway, but my anecdotal case was when I purchased the latest EQ expansion through Steam a few years ago. Never did get to log in until I used my old EQ installation.

Steam also has a terrible rep with for old games they sell and do not support. I bought the old Star Wars Series Jedi Knight series (7 games in all) during a sale. NONE of them worked. Now they sit in my library, being a virtual paperweight.

I can also say that support is usually "Contact the game developer.", no matter what the trouble is.

But most people love Steam, for some odd reason. So it is here to stay.

Personally the only modern MMORPG trend that annoys me is the idea that MMOs need to be designed in a way to attract people who don't actually like MMOs. Which to me makes about as much sense as someone trying to figure out a way to get vegetarians to eat at their steakhouse.
