I'm thinking of giving Warrior a go as my first choice. I hope this isn't a bad pick for me lol
It's solid and probably among the easiest classes to play. Lots of weapons so you can get a lot of fun in the first part of the game by trying out different syles.
Would you suggest a Warrior or Guardian for someone who is used to playing a tank role?  Usually the Paladin is a class I always go with for every game I go with. But Warrior's always look fun to play as.
Chronomancers (Mesmers) are the primary tanking class in this game. Guardians and Warriors typically fill dps roles in the metagame, though Firebrand (Guardian) tanks are viable.
Warriors are a pretty hardy class with a lot of versatility.  While sustained tanking isn't something they excel at, they have good survivability when spec'd properly, and can mitigate and protect against a lot of damage.

Firebrand is great at tanking too, but has a higher learning curve.  Druid tanking is also possible, even though they nerfed it a bit from the past 2 seasons, they are still very tough to kill.

And lets not forget scrapper tanks, high damage mitigation and rapid healing with stealth makes them extremely hard to kill in PvE.  In PvP my hammer scrapper puts out more damage than a holosmith with a nearly 100% crit rate.
I think the question is best answered by which tanks are useful. Literally every class can tank with certain specs - even thief and necromancer. The thing that defines a tank as useful (in PvE) is the type of support that they can contribute to PvE.

Currently, Chronomancers are best because of quickness and alacrity support. Firebrands also pack a lot of support. Warriors are limited to might stacking and banners. And Holosmiths, for all of their tankiness... just don't bring enough to the team.
I rarely play tank specs, not since the days where they were useful for more than temporary support in PvP.  I would imagine druid tanks would still be pretty good, they offer a lot of support. Especially spirit specs.  Maybe not as versatile as a firebrand, but they have great team support options with exceptional healing.

I don't know much about holosmith tanking, I'm really not a fan of the holosmith, they seem very broken atm damage wise, so I refrain from playing them until the balance is all worked out.  There's nothing I hate more than settling into a build that gets nerfed to all hell later.

When I said Holosmith, I meant Scrapper. No one Holosmith tanks that I'm aware of, and they are used for their high dps. Scrappers are incredibly durable, but I question their PvE usefulness. They seem to be completely geared around PvP.

Yeah, I have a scrapper build for PvE, and it works really well, but power scrapper is very hard to play in PvE, unless you're all kits, which is still hard, but at least you have some versatility.  Condition scrapper plays very well with dual pistol. Condition burst is some of the highest in the game for engis, and the only reason you'd choose scrapper instead of holosmith or base engi is because of the additional stealth and the gyro effects and regen buffs.

I don't know how that helps high PvE team content though.  In PvP it's amazing.

is the game still fashion wars at max lvl? it was so boring, nothing to play for, no goal... hit max lvl and thats all. i couldnt play it for more than a week when i hit max lvl in the first expansion. has anything changed for the past years?
Like with most games, you'll be fighting for gear at end game, or weapons, and if you really want to push for the legendaries you certainly can,  but unlike other games, the best stats are awarded by ascended items and not just legendaries.  I don't find it any more boring than any other kind of gear grind.  At least with legendaries you can swap stats on the fly.

Don't pay attention to the base classes, look at the elite specializations.  Ultimately that's where you end up and they play totally different.

Agree. I hated my Necro and then I hit Reaver. My favorite class now.
