I work front desk at a hotel, and I had a conversation with my boss (who is also a gamer) and we came to the conclusion that I'm literally an NPC in the lives of our guests. I sit here doing nothing until a guest comes in, then I give them the same spiel I always spew, issue keys to a room and tell them to come back if they require aid. Everytime, no changes.

If I were able to change the setting, I would change to EVE online. Sci-Fi is my favorite genre, and capsuleers are (lore appropriately) immortal!
Question is are your clones you?  I always wondered if in Star Trek did you have to die and be cloned on the other end or did you actually teleport.
A lot of TV shows and movies dealt with that question.  In some shows the clone had to be killed after consciousness was duplicated then transferred as opposed to being transferred.  If they weren't killed immediately they fought to stay alive.  Arnold Schwarzenegger was in a movie in which his clone left to start a franchise of his original business at the end of the movie.

Sometimes I've wondered, what if this was a version of The Sims or Second Life, and a gamer was directing my actions based on his/her playstyle.  What if I was an alt and several characters were being played at the same time?

If the game is based on spiritual development instead of monetary goals, money and profitability wouldn't matter.  Which would explain why some people who are rich regretted not spending more time with their families, friends, doing more things they really enjoyed, and less time making money.

Unless you believe in reincarnation which means you don't believe in perma-death.  So just like in an MMO you would respawn or if the game shut down you'd create another character that represented you in another game.

It would probably change my outlook on life quite significantly. I mean...everything I believed my whole life turns out to be false. I cannot begin to imagine how it would affect my views.

Would it change the way I live? Probably not.

I am a surfer who, thanks to smart investments, retired in the age of 32. Now I can spend the rest of my life surfing, fishing, diving, and doing other things I love. Watching sundown by the ocean with my board next to me...there is nothing else I need.

As for the setting, I would change it to a world not burdened by overpopulation where humans are not violent creatures driven by their own wealth maximization and desire to hold power over others. To a world where we all live in balance with the nature, so that the oceans are not polluted with plastics and other species are not continuously eradicated.

On a less serious note, I think many people's heads would explode when they would figure out they have been playing MMORPG with a FFA open world full loot PvP their whole live.
I always tell Christians that Christianity is a belief that god is a coder and this reality is a game to see if you pass to heaven.

I mean if this was a game what could we really do different.  Who knows how society at large would handle something like that.

society would stop caring (for most part), anarchy would ensue and people wouldn't care if they died or commited crimes because its all an "illusion/fake/not real/not reality etc". Granted, if this isn't reality and we're all being watched, the people who start anarchy wouldn't have a good time in reality (or so I'd think).

But mostly, the likely scenario is a post-apocalyptic world but not created by nuclear bombs but by society themselves who either ...

A: Become afraid of what reality really is and that they all lived a lie leading to an apocalyptic disaster of society collapsing...

    or

B: Just stop caring and will now do anything they want because none of this is real (if the theory that this is fake ends up being true). Which like A, ends up with society collapsing

My theory (if we really aren't in reality)

Something happened to/on Earth, and at least SOME people were put into a cryostasis-style machine and to put them on a virtual reality earth, but in reality the real people really are on either a giant spaceship in space or deep underground if something happened on surface of earth.

This theory means the vast majority of people don't really exist, and are actually AI...but the AI is programmed to actually think they are real, when they really aren't and are just part of the machine. This of course means even I could be AI, and not even exist in "reality". Same with everyone else.

That or second theory. Or aliens took over and put us in a matrix-style prison. This could be possible actually, because they have found cave paintings from the ancient times, and ancient drawings from egypt of literal spaceships and alien-looking creatures. An alien species would need to be god-like in technology to travel from solar system to solar system or even galaxy to galaxy. This means ancient egypt never existed, and there was never any real history. In fact, it would mean the drawings could be "hints" to these alien overlords, where the aliens put them there for people to look at and figure out like a puzzle.

Why would aliens do this however? Well, government sees a spaceship and shoots it down. Government sees an alien, they kidnap it and experiment on it. They could have conquered earth in retaliation to humans aggression...BUT I don't think this theory is nearly as likely as first theory...cause why not just kill the humans. Why waste time and resources, even if its for research. Plenty of other ways to do research.

So that goes back to 1st theory which I find far more likely. IF and that is quite a big IF, we are not in reality...that means a large portion of humanity died (no way would anything be able to handle billions of people in a machine. I bet not even 100,000 people could really be taken care of properly, either underground OR especially on a spaceship), and the survivors are in space or deep underground thinking they've been on earth the entire time.

Would suck for anyone that is really an AI though and think they are really a human but just an AI programmed to think that.

Third theory if we aren't in reality. Kinda relates to first theory...

But we could have been put into a Black Mirror style society (in that one earlier episode, but a bit different in a way) of all of us are in a machine powering some unknown thing and its more a distopian earth with some government assuming control and some people somehow able to be a part of reality (maybe they are chosen or something, or its just RNG). People do love government control and most people are pretty stupid and more like sheep and most people are really stupid (as seen by everyone who buys loot boxes for 10s of thousands of dollars if not more), so not too far fetched. But really, we are in a tiny room with no windows and powering something and really we think we're on earth and maybe we are, but its really a shit tiny room in multiple giant apartment highrise style buildings.

This theory means everyone really does exist (which actually be the best of the three theories), and no one is an AI at all.

All theories of us not being in reality could also explain why movies/shows like matrix, black mirror exist. And why there is a growing support of earth not being reality...because reality seeps into our fake reality and subconsciously people are figuring out something isn't quite right (but choose to mostly ignore it, because the truth would be too much to handle for most people) and so is born the theory of us not being reality.

its like being in a coma (or even just a normal dream at night being so good sometimes don't want to wake up from it)...sometimes it feels so real that its hard for the person to escape the coma cause it feels like reality and they are afraid to confront it since whatever dream (or nightmare) the coma put them in feels very real, and knowing the truth that it isn't is a lot to handle for most. But there is always something wrong...something off...and subconsciously they know the truth and eventually it overwhelms them and they end up (sometimes, sometimes they die sadly) fighting to wake up

In that case, it's time to start looking for duping bugs, speed hacks, ways to access any GM tools, or best of all, any security holes that allow us to do things that escape our MMORPG life and get us information about the universe that created ours.

This is why sandbox mmorpg sucks.  There is no real consequence to ganking people.  Stop with the risk vs reward bullshit.  If sandbox mmorpg have real risk like real life you most likely won't gank people in it.

Fixed that for you.  None of the sandbox MMORPGs that I've liked (A Tale in the Desert, Puzzle Pirates, Uncharted Waters Online) were heavy on ganking.  ATITD had no combat at all.  In Puzzle Pirates, you could attack others, but there wasn't much of a point, so it was rare.  A large fraction of the world in UWO was free for all PVP, but the consequences of attacking other players were so harsh that hardly anyone did.  In UWO, if you wanted to defeat other players, you basically had to find someone who wasn't paying attention or didn't care if they got killed, as it was very difficult to catch someone who was trying not to get caught.

    1. Would it change your outlook on life or would you continue what you are doing?

    2. Would you change the setting and settings if you could once and to what?
    1) Yes. No permadeath, it seems? Respawn with little consequence to being foolish, as most MMOs today are?

    2) I'd most definitely get more memory! This 64k of RAM is killing me!

Personally the only modern MMORPG trend that annoys me is the idea that MMOs need to be designed in a way to attract people who don't actually like MMOs. Which to me makes about as much sense as someone trying to figure out a way to get vegetarians to eat at their steakhouse.

If you believe the Big Bang theory, then technically every outcome was determined at that exact instance. The creation of planets, lifeforms, and even the chemical and neurological changes through interacting with other individuals could have been mathematically calculated.

That would make this reality less of an MMO and more of a simulation.
    Quantum mechanics says otherwise.

Even if we can convince them to do that, they'll roll back to before any of us were born and then change something such that none of us ever will be born.

Actually if the big bang was merely an intersection point of branes...  The more science gets involved the smaller the big things get.
