Does an M Rating make you More, Less, or No Less likely to play a mmorpg?

AmatheAmathe Member LegendaryPosts: 7,630
For me an M for sexual content makes it more likely, whereas an M for violence makes it less likely.

I never even look at or even notice the rating of a game before purchasing.

Interesting, I didn't think anyone ever looked at the ratings at all, aside from a few parents of small children.

I'm the opposite though.  I prefer they just keep sexual content out of MMOs.  Nudity is fine, but I don't really have any interest in video game sex/NPC relationships, etc. in an MMO.

It really doesn't matter to me.

I will say that an "M" rating may get me to pass more often than not because developers/publishers seem to think "childish handling" of adult topics makes it "mature."

Personally the only modern MMORPG trend that annoys me is the idea that MMOs need to be designed in a way to attract people who don't actually like MMOs. Which to me makes about as much sense as someone trying to figure out a way to get vegetarians to eat at their steakhouse.

Very little impact... but I would avoid any game that didn't let me click a button to hide nudity.  Sorry... pixel boobs just don't do it for me and I don't need some guys schlong t-bagging me after he kills me.

MMOs - less. I probably wouldn't ever play a mature/adult rated MMO after my last experience
    Why?

Ever played age of conan on a pvp server?

Worst most childish and immature, by far the worst community I've ever seen on any MMO. It made EVE Online look like a bunch of saints.

Then you think PVE server was safe? NOPE

The pvpers killed their server, went to pve servers and killed those too

For other genres I don't care about the rating. But I'll never play a M+ MMo again

The M rating is similar to a Rated R movie.
"Titles rated M (Mature) have content that may be suitable for persons ages 17 and older. Titles in this category may contain intense violence, blood and gore, sexual content, and/or strong language."

By comparison this can be limited with a T rating.
"Titles rated T (Teen) have content that may be suitable for ages 13 and older. Titles in this category may contain violence, suggestive themes, crude humor, minimal blood, simulated gambling, and/or infrequent use of strong language."

The M rating is desirable for a number of reasons, and the rating system is merely a method to inform consumers on the content of a game.

It depends.  If the game is basically hyped and marketed based on that rating, then it's basically a schtick and I'm likely to give less value to it.

Age of Conan comes to mind :-P  People were hyping it up a lot based on the vulgarity, gore, and nudity in the game...

That turned out well, didn't it.

Depends on whether it's prudish North Americans or perverted Europeans rating it.

It depends on the purpose.  Generally M doesn't help or hurt a game in my eyes unless it is outside what I see the game as being.  AO on the other hand would usually be a strong negative.

never cared about the game rating, i guess that's because i'm mature so i dont need to care about game ratings, but to answer the question i guess M rated game id be more interested to play if anything.

I don't really pay any attention to the rating, but not really a fan of nudity/sex in my video games. Although dancing naked in Age of Conan back in the day netted me quite a bit of coin from neckbeards, and nerd virgins. So I guess it has it's advantages.

I too, like my lord @kyleran never look at the rating. But when I read in the news that blah game did this to reduce their rating or cater to the snowflakes of the world I'd cross that title off my list. Fuck self censorship for any reason whatsoever.

    Why is Ao bad?
Ao, unless the game has a really specific reason for being Ao, generally means something along the lines of sappy dialogue with nude npcs, or even pcs.  I have a hard time seeing an Ao MMO being anything but ridiculous, unless it was along specific lines.

I don't look at ratings, they are unimportant to me.

I should add that if I was a parent they would be important.

To anyone in favor of M or AO ratings on games:  which current developer is responsible enough, mature enough, and dedicated enough to deliver an adult-themed MMO without it becoming cartoonish or sleazy?

Personally, I don't think there are any current developers out there capable of making something like what the thread title suggests.

Logic, my dear, merely enables one to be wrong with great authority.

ESO is M rating and it's neither cartoonish nor sleazy.

Why does a developer have to avoid cartoonish or sleazy?

Mature can mean adult themes, violence, sexual content and any number of things including sleazy. Cartoonish is fine as well as there are people who like cartoonish.

Bring on the Cartoonish and bring on the sleazy.

We are showing our age, every teen and preteen playing these mature games is playing them as a badge of honour by "getting away with it". And after all these ratings are for them not us. :)

I've no idea *why* ESO has an M rating.  My guess is strictly due to animated violence.  I didn't find any of the stories dealing with mature topics, or the quests presenting the character with any serious ethical or moral dilemma.  The characters only explore wardrobe choices rather than serious issues about life.

I agree that ESO isn't cartoonish nor sleazy.  But I don't see anything to make it adult, either.

You can check the reasons here: ESO ESRB

Most developers would make proper adjustments to get a lower rating, because none of those are a deal breaker or anything they can use in their advertisement to get the mature or adult-seeking-boob-smashing audience fished in. But they didn't do it because they decided to stay true to their world and their art. In my opinion, admirable.

And this is what I meant by this example. A game can still be rated M, with some mature elements and not turn into a porn simulator and a sleazy lame game. But I also agree with @Sovrath, there isn't anything wrong with em too.

An M rating is meaningless to me unless I was purchasing the product for my three year old grandson.
