I heard this on the radio this morning.  All I can say is 'some people have more money than sense'.

You know, I think video games will become like sports, where people will pay tutors to help in sports. So pay money to send your kid to baseball camp, and pay money to send your kid to fortnite camp.

These parents should be sending themselves to intelligence camp.

I don't see it as different than paying for tennis lessons or any thing else

I mean when me and my friends wanted to go to LAN centers back in the day during the summer, my parents would pay for that. Kind of similar just without tutoring I guess.

Now that E-Sports are actually a viable career and players have the potential to make tons of money I don't see it any different than any other form of camp to try to get kids better at what they are interested in.

People really need to get over this hurdle where E-Sports are some gross thing. If chess and poker are viable sports, anything can be.

I don't think many consider chess or poker as a sport in the same vein as something like football.

I did not intend by my post to reopen the "what is a sport" barrel of monkeys. But perhaps that is unavoidable, thinking more about it.

I see E-Sports, Infomercials and Paidprogramming as having a lot in common.

Guys, you have blizzard throwing massive money into e sports, it is here to stay, it will be another avenue of entertainment just like professional sports.

I see it as a kids interest and a parent supporting their kid. Get over being judgmental about it. It is here to stay.

But chess and poker are very viable professions, if you are at the top end of the spectrum.  ESports seem to be going that way as well.   And you get far fewer concussions....

If you are holding out for the perfect game, the only game you play will be the waiting one.

Look, I have a 14-year old son that loves video games and being a gamer myself I obviously do nothing to discourage it as a hobby.  But if he were to decide he wanted to go Pro, there's no way I'd be paying for a tutor.  I wouldn't discourage him from pursuing that goal, but I would also encourage him to develop another marketable skill beyond being a Pro gamer.  How long do you think being a Pro gamer lasts as a career?  How many people in their 40s do you see at these tournaments?  I'm guessing you know the answer.  Once you hit 30, your "career" in eSports is most likely over because your reaction time has slowed to the point where it's impossible for you to effectively compete with the 18 to 26-year-olds you're playing against.

So, let's not put eSports on a pedastool and treat is as an actual long-term career, which it most definitely is not.  If you look at professional football even, you will occasionally find players in their late 30s and early 40s that still play.  For baseball, you can find people even older.  But I doubt you're going to see that happen in eSports.
I think I would be wayyy more open to the idea of being a streamer on twitch than a pro gamer, Besides that is where the moneys at.

Supporting their kids becoming unhealthy, fat non-contributors to society, maybe.

How can they be fat? This is a sport! They will be athletes!

Except most E-sports players work out and are in relatively good shape as that is part of their image.

By that definition, any entertainer or professional sports player is not contributing to society at all. As how is a soccer player going to do anything more for society than a starcraft player who are both playing professionally?

Anything that keeps kids out of trouble and busy is fine by me.  It's the ones with too much free time and end up falling into bad situations I would worry about.  If the parents have the money and their kids are interested in anything that doesn't involve the possibility of jail time, then good for them.

Just wait til cyber-sports becomes Olympic events.

if you read the original article and the article it links too it only mentions ONE guy who paid 20 dollars an hour...doesn't say how many hours for his son to learn.  Seems more like media clickbait .

I supported one of my kids with his dream of becoming a Rock Star. I also told him not to quit his day job.

I agree E-Sports are here to stay and so are Infomercials.
