16bit JRPG Style MMO?

ZigZagsZigZags Member UncommonPosts: 381
For quite a while now I've always contemplated if a 16bit JRPG style MMO would be possible and if so, what would it look like? After spending over 100 hours recently in Octopath Traveler, it got me thinking again. I consider myself an "old school gamer" (age 35) so I grew up on Final Fantasy 6 (3 on SNES), Earthbound, Secrets of Evermore etc. I always thought a 16bit retro style MMO which hasn't really ever been done, or at least successfully, would be technologically possible and who wouldn't love seeing real players run around in 2d sprites in front of a Octopath Style 2d/3d backdrop?

Has any game already tried this that I missed? What do you guys think the potential for a game like this would be?

Must be in the air or something because I've been wanting to play games with those 16 bit era graphics lately myself. There was one specifically that looked pretty good that I saw some gameplay of but I can't remember the name.

IDK if any have really done the 3D environment with the 2D sprites like octopath though.

Why not? Mmos are not about graphics, this is why there is so many failed ones, people who make them dont get its about content

No fate but what we make, so make me a ham sandwich please.

Yeah that would be a neat idea. Kinda like Graal Online or something similar, but I could never figure out how to play that game.

I think if one of the game giants made a pixel art based MMO they'd be laughed out the gaming industry, which is kinda too bad.
