you'll play what the community has deemed meta or you will play solo.

I can confirm this. The game in its first year was great, but with the expansions they kept adding statistically superior builds that eliminated most other builds, in other words, the 'meta' got a lot more significant.

This was left to fester for years, and still does today, and it created an extremely toxic environment, of which fractals and WvW reign supreme. Hell in WvW people will go as far as literally insult you for joining the map while using certain builds or classes (try bringing a longbow ranger into WvW and count the commentary per hour you receive).

People just got extremely overzealous and forget that it is supposed to be a game.
yup.. i cba to be around people like that so i'd rather just not play the game.
wvw is a cool concept but when the community try to bully anyone out of the map that don't play what they want then they can enjoy empty maps for all i care.
The real mistake was in nerfing Edge of the Mists rewards. EotM served to attract and segregate the PvE'ers and casual WvW players, allowing them to play more fun and rewarding maps with infinite overflow servers. This allowed the hardcore WvW elitists to keep to their competitive maps while letting everyone else enjoy EotM in peace. Yes, the EotM were basically glorified zerg farms with rampant collusion/pacifism between the three teams, but this was a design issue, not a rewards issue and ultimately created a community driven experience that many enjoyed nonetheless. With EotM rewards nerfed, they've basically been abandoned, leaving WvW as the most toxic sector of the community.
