Makes a total greed move then calls it "chalking up to experience".So he never figured on common sense to be a part of the thought process?I am quite certain that at this point in time,he already knwos how easy it is to sucker people in to keep spending on virtual items and just handing over free money,so he is going to never stop at this greedy type of venture.
To be honest, why would anyone be surprised at anything that goes on within SC.

Well if youre talking about the REALITY of SWG and not the revisionist history then he is well on his way. SWG maybe the most over rated game ever. Rushed into release, 'taken over' when it was filled with bugs and crashes and bloat then when it was spiraling out of control they make a wholesale change to the game that drives away even the most ardent supporters of it for some quick cash grab and then it (quickly) fades into oblivion.
But yeah its similar the IDEA of what SWG was and what it actually was have been confused over the past 15 years or so. Most of (if not all) the 'cool' stuff people remember was buggy as hell, the servers lagged and shit happened all the time.
No surprise though people who have distorted memories of something and elevate it on a pedestal would be easy prey for someone selling a similar dream with a lot of the same red flags (and many many more).
Bottomline is MMOs are dead and as you and everyone here that supports SC wants to keep reminding people is SC ISNT an MMO (I guess the inference is its supposed to be more but it wont be). It also isnt going to be the RP paradise a lot of people think it will be, nor the 'future of VR (remember THAT whole topic when VR was the rage and everyone was talking about how SC was starting to do VR work).
But that just touches the stuff this project has been rebranded and sold as over the past 6 or 7 years. But thats probably why people still throw money at it (allegedly) because it hits every target demo out there in gaming pretty much. But in the end at best its going to be some pay to win sim that isnt much more than it is right now (in the multiplayer aspect) and MAYBE a couple single player campaign type games that take 20-30 hours to blitz through.
But I will still believe it when I see it. SQ 42 or Star Marine SHOULD be easy at this point. Not sure why there hasnt been any mention of them in ages. Well I am sure why but you wouldnt like my opinion.
It also isnt going to be the RP paradise a lot of people think it will b
Super Duper Hyper Wrong. SC invests a hell lot in being as immersive and RP friendly as possible (with things like nitpicky customization still to come), FOIP, the Director Mode and all, just bits intentionally created for RP and content creators.

Name the last MMO to come out or one that is in development right now that has a chance to actually matter...
How can it be a 'densely' populated world with at best and unsubstantiated server pop of 50 and maybe 100 dreamt of? I know people envision SC as what Cyberpunk just showed us but it aint happening and even though that game is still a ways away it is a lot closer than SC is and while it is a single player game so is two thirds of what Roberts has been selling the past 7 years...But that should also be a wake up call to all the people who are hailing Roberts as the best at what he does. That Cyber Punk trailer shows exactly the type of interactive 'world' Roberts sold people years ago, where is it? So people can forget the Elite Dangerous comparisons Cyber Punk raised the bar. At least on 65-75% of what Roberts was selling.
Until it goes beyond the random shooter sims it has or at best a half dozen guys walking around ships playing hide and seek it isnt an RP 'paradise'. The best RP games have player mods or mod abilities to enhance the basic game play and give a unique experience to players. It goes beyond a 'cool' setting or back drop and Voip.
I know youre going to defend it until your fingers fall off but you cant. Each new game to come out delivered and ready to play in a fraction of the time (regardless of how 'ambitious' or 'genre changing' they are or arent) they all raise the bar on some aspect of something Chris Roberts has claimed he wants to do (basically because he has claimed he is going to do everything imaginable).
Its REALLY going to be hilarious when someone delivers a giant sandworm in their game and...oh wait ARK did that over a year ago.
Name the last MMO to come out or one that is in development right now that has a chance to actually matter...
The reason MMO's have been in the bitter streets is that developers who keep copy/pasting the same beaten formula in almost every MMO that has been releasing.
The genre is not dead, the ambition of developers to create new experiences within the genre is in life support.
How can it be a 'densely' populated world with at best and unsubstantiated server pop of 50 and maybe 100 dreamt of?
The player pops are based on something very much WIP, the final solutions, aka the server mesh is what is intended to provide scalability, 50 was never and is not the player pop.
One of the things that will get refactored is physics, on the server-side currently a server no matter what is limited per 4 threads for physics calculations, the refactor is intended to provide scalability and let them scale with more powerful hardware, what is stated will raise the caps up to 200 players, this, before the server meshing happens (aka the scaling up to thousands).
You can nitpick the current cap and act like this is the final thing, but nope, not even close.

ESO has a huge roleplaying community, as several others do, and they sure ain't depending on mods to manage it, they simply have a huge selection of visuals, emotes and nitpicky character customization and RP flourished.

We all know SWG had many many issues and what could have made it better, but SOE never really listened. It's a love hate thing for many I think. The part I think most developers are missing when they think they are making a spiritual successor to SWG is the fact that you didn't need to just do combat to play the game, which brought all types of gamers together, as well as social sim type players. .

LMAO no one RPs in ESO other than a handful of people. Games people RP in get streamed, they used to be the top streamed games going until the battle royal games came out. ESO doesnt have anyone streaming it nor many people watching it.
Yeah everything in SC is a 'work in progress' and will be perpetually. Thats the point. I only go by what I see I dont really speculate on what they say theyre going to do until they change that plan or scrap it altogether. Even with the Amazon cloud tech theyre not going to get servers or planes or whatever they want to call different 'instances' of the same area. It already lags and crashes now with no NPCS and no people how are they going to have a 'full' world AND players on top of that?
MMOs are dead they take longer to develop than the tech theyre using lasts i.e. theyre dated before they release. SC if it ever comes out will be just another example of that. Why do you think they went crazy about VR (even though people with brains knew VR wasnt going to be viable for years.) Backers dodged a bullet there.
There are a lot of games out there that have come close to being decent. Even ESO which is the best (IMO) MMO going right now falls way short in multiple areas. It just isnt monetarily feasible anymore to try and integrate all the things into an MMO that will attract a diverse enough playerbase to support it.
Even with the money SC has (allegedly) raised over the past 7 years that isnt enough to sustain a fully developed and released MMO. 30 million a year seems to be their claimed average, thats not enough. Especially if its going to be half as in depth and expansive as they claim. See thats just it, something the fanbois and the critics dont even realize this project even if the numbers are true and especially if the numbers are true is showing that its basically impossible to build an MMO (or even a couple single player games) even with a couple hundred million bucks, and thats just trying to get it out the door. Theyll require even more monetization and money to keep it going and continue to add content and fix all the bugs its going to have.
ESO is an example of that as well. That game released like shit, but they took the time, spent the money and now its a half way decent game. Some of the more recent changes have taken some steps back but those are more than likely personal preference types. But Bethesda is basically the number one game developer going right now with some of the top titles ever released credited to their name. But even they delivered a dud but had the money to fix it. But still couldnt make it 'perfect'. Even their single player games lack in a lot of ways and are only smash hits because theyre open source and enough people script and mod things into them to fix the shortcomings of the original development.
Its a great irony, bad games and some decent games are being developed and released every day, none of them with the budget CiG has (allegedly). Yet they (CiG) still need more money and more time and theyre no closer to releasing a single one of the supposed three entities theyre working on than they were last year at this time. In fact theyre probably farther away especially once they start tearing down and trying to re-do the flight physics the guy they just fired worked on for 6 + years. Its the same broken record with them.
Thats one of the top three criticisms people have with Roberts.
Kinda dumb; they should at least let any paying customer stream the live event for free since it's not the same level as being there. I mean hell ZeniMax hands out codes for watching twitch streams and all you have to do is connect your twitch account to ESO.
I don't care who you are, this is just shady.
I suppose because they are crowd-funded and convention crews are expensive they were passing on costs. I would have thought people considered that responsible - if a hype convention can be considered as such.
I didn't see it as shady though because the few conventions my company attends cost us a lot. It costs between $10k - $20k for us to attend with a small booth (sometimes shared). Internet access to the convention area alone can cost several hundred dollars just for 5 days.
Maybe cons are good advertising for them. They probably need it after that demo they just showed off.
Yeah but streaming it should just be considered an advertising cost. If they had maybe generated actual hype around the live stream, did some drawings for viewers, threw out some swag for purchasing a ship package during the stream ect, it might have paid for itself that way.
In my opinion everything they have done with this game from day one is all wrong and breaks the norms, and not in a good way (asking for more and more money and time, breaking the game into buggy modules, ect) which is why I feel something is shady about it.
I would have thought critics of the project would have praised this approach because it defrays the costs of a marketing convention and keeps project funds focused on development.
I wonder if they would have made it free from the get go if people would have raged about them using project funds for a convention when they should have charged backers to help keep costs down.
I've come to love watching Indie Crowd-Funded projects dance at the behest of the gamer community six-gun. It's one of the consequences new projects should consider when going crowd-funded in my opinion.
They have to. They're cutting the majority of strings attached when they go the publisher route, having to court the less-informed seems like a fair trade-off to me.
As for the marketing costs and such, maybe having conventions in the first place before you have a stable game for folks to play is a bad idea?
Tell your god Christ Roberts to stop making stupid decisions and the amount of drama will be cut down.
Then again the drama seems to provide more entertainment then the game actually can
Tell your god Derek Smart to stop making stupid remarks and focus on making video-games. Then again the it's the only way haters have to be relevant is trying to interrupt the ones actually doing it lol

Really? These are the dumbest arguments people put forth on here the 'difficulty' of game development. How many games have released since this Roberts started this fiasco? HOw many BILLIONS have fortnite and Pubg and (fill in the blank here) made? Not to mention the games people are playing on their phones.
Yeah OI know he is making something completely different and genre changing...guess what THOSE games more than changed their genres.
And lets not forget the newest projects to be added to the list even just recently. Most notably Cyberpunk. No way no how Roberts didnt watch that video they showed and didnt have a melt down wondering why HIS 'team' couldnt make an environment like the one they showed. Forget the gameplay and all the other stuff just the AI and NPCs. I mean he is supposedly making a couple single player games in addition to the MMO right? Where are they? SO you can cry 'most ambitious' and all the other nonsense he throws out there to describe what theyre allegedly doing, but there have been and continue to be gamed both developed and more importantly RELEASED that will most definitely be better than anything Cig and Roberts put forth, and for a lot less money.
Every time a new game gets put out the bar is raised even higher. And the disappointment of whatever these guys release will be all the greater. Despite all the hyperbole to the contrary.
