Some of us might be old enough to remember AAA games costing 49.99 and not having 'expansions.'

I think it can be doable in todays market.  Look at a game like fortnite or overwatch.  Everything in cash shop is cosmetic and fortnite has raked in over 1 billion dollars.  I am sure overwatch is up there too.

It's not a bad idea but it's very difficult to really find a good MMO game that does not have a store.

The hilarious thing is when they address the playerbase requesting their back to reinstate microtransactions in places where they are banned. Like what happen with Belgium and 2K.

I don't understand why so many people have heartburn with cash shops.  Unless there are p2w items, I am totally fine with the option to buy outfits, loot boxes (that's right I said it), or other convenience items.  My money and if I wanna look a little prettier than you scrubs, I'll buy myself something pretty.  If I wanna live in sin, I'll gamble with loot boxes.  All voluntary! FREEEEDDDOOMMMM!!!!!

    On one level no disagreement.

If loot boxes lead to more crime though - not discussing here whether they do - that would require more funding to maintain the status quo so would require a restriction on your freedom i.e. more taxes.

So your freedom would come at the cost of a restriction on your freedom - and mine!

So a judgement has to be made about how far to go. Otherwise its may be: "I open boxes. I run out of money. You have money. I take your money. Or mine."

Now you exclude P2W items but how are they different. Sure they would have an impact on gameplay but if I come along and argue: my money, if I want to spend it to grind you into the ground why shouldn't I, all voluntary - you can play a different game, freedom .... what would your reply be?

So what you are saying is we give the company money to buy the game, then pay another $15 a month for no reason whatsoever and get nothing in return for that?...Wow how has this never been done before?

If there was some study that showed that loot boxes contributed in any significant way to crime, then I would say something different.  While I'm sure there are some who do bad things to get that tingly feeling of opening up a crate, the vast majority (I would postulate) are on the up and up.

The item that you buy would be better off as a quest/dungeon reward.

The market researchers needed to "spin" the items to community, would be better off as writers for content related to the item.

And the data scientists, along with the time spent making creepy user tracking software.  would be better off for the users as actual new features.

Practice doesn't make perfect, practice makes permanent.

I could point to the fact that costs for producing games has increased 15 times over the last two decades and sales only 5 times, meaning developers need to have people spend a LOT more money on their products to get the same ROI and not just to fleece us poor gamers. And that gamers due to oversaturation and increased entitlement refused to do so, so other ways of getting revenue were introduced, cashshops, day one DLC, expansions, GAaS, etc. etc.

I could do that, but I don't want to be a party pooper so I won't. Sub only games YEAH!

'This does not apply just to ED but SC or any other game. What they will get is Rebirth/X4, likely prettier but equally underwhelming and pointless.

It is incredibly difficult to design some meaningfull leg content that would fit a space ship game - simply because it is not a leg game.

It is just huge resource waste....'

FFXI with a much lower population base is still going strong for Square Enix after they decided they would stop producing for it a couple years ago.I think they realized how easy money is with guaranteed sub fees.FFXIV seemed to settle down and also give them more confidence in moving forward,so all seems good with SE.

IMO it is the proper way to build a game, anything else is just negative results for a game.

The only other idea i could accept and surprised more devs not doing it yet is in game sponsors. There are many ideas that can be introduced through sponsorship without really offending the game at hand. The only downside of it would be immersion, you would have to make sure sponsored ideas don't ruin immersion and come off looking like for example that GW2 super Mario themed map,i don't like silliness or immersion ruining ideas.

Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.

For me, I grew up playing "complete" games. Everything in the game came with the purchase price. The fact that most MMO publishers now divvy up and slice & dice their games into sell-able pieces does not sit well with me.

Most game companies are not "hurting" financially. The only reason they do this is because the can. We allow it with our support.

That's just me, though. Many love the idea of cash shops.

Personally the only modern MMORPG trend that annoys me is the idea that MMOs need to be designed in a way to attract people who don't actually like MMOs. Which to me makes about as much sense as someone trying to figure out a way to get vegetarians to eat at their steakhouse.
