I'll avoid naming it, since I don't think that is the point of this thread as even says not what game it was. But, I think I'm gonna vote reasonably good. I don't think it was the best ever made though. And none of the patches ruined it for me. I'd put it as "okay" since that is what I think of it now. But I did get 2 years out of it and it had actual GM events and I don't think I'd play a game that was just "okay" seeing that many MMOs after I didn't stick long.
And there isn't any game like it still, so can't really vote "dated" though it could be due to its age.
My personal games I think were a lot better (not in just my favorites, but just thought they were better)...two were released a lot later...the 3rd funny enough was older than my first MMO and I still thought it was a lot better in general.
My Skyrim, Fallout 4, Starbound and WoW + other game mods at MODDB:
My first was EQ when it was fairly new. What I thought it was going to be like and what it ended up being like was two different things. I got into an area and saw a guy fighting a spider so figured I'd help him like a hero - and then he bitched me out for stealing his kill. He was not interested that I was a damn hero just helping out fellow adventurers, and I didn't understand the mechanics. I didn't stick with it.
My second was UO, since I had the mmorpg bug on what they could do and what was in my head. I didn't like UO either though.
My third, which I consider my real first since it was the first I got into and sunk significant time into was AO. I thought most of it was great. I still do, even if Funcom banned me from their games about a year ago for no reason that I can figure out.
I loved it until it went through a lot of changes some good, some bad, and it couldn't keep up with other MMOs as more and more launched.

My first was Uo, hated it...First steps I took outside of Brittain I was killed in less than 5 seconds.....Tried again, dead in 5 seconds, delete....Worst game ever....Luckily my second was EQ and provided a great experience.
My First MMO was EQ, and I will say, it remains Iconic and legendary in it's own right.
Egotism is the anesthetic that dullens the pain of stupidity, this is why when I try to beat my head against the stupidity of other people, I only hurt myself.
Most old-timers still talk fondly of their first MMO even if it was before sound and graphics. We old timers also talk fondly of our first lover if we can remember them still.
Far from "perfect", it was still an excellent game. I'd love to a see similar game using today's technology.

Personally the only modern MMORPG trend that annoys me is the idea that MMOs need to be designed in a way to attract people who don't actually like MMOs. Which to me makes about as much sense as someone trying to figure out a way to get vegetarians to eat at their steakhouse. - FARGIN_WAR
Horrible, charged me by the hour and buggy as hell.

My first in earnest was UO and still playing now 21 years later .. UO still offers a more challenging risk/reward world than any other game to date and and also still has more activities a player can do than any other game to date ... Other than graphics the genre has not progressed much over the years
The very first MMO: Russian one, clearly Pay-to-win (best stuff for cash only, gameplay limited by hours per week - while if you pay, you get bonus). Was not so good in these days, probably exists today as (most likely) more pay-to-win with certain political deviations.
Runescape, the first normal MMO: was limited to free players, abandoned because of boredom. And then Istaria. And Lotro.
The real purpose of this poll was to try to gauge how much of an effect there was of people liking their first MMORPG because it was their first MMORPG. Mechanics that are stale to jaded veterans because dozens of games have already done them can be fresh and exciting the first time you see them. Whether it was the first game to do something or the hundredth, if it's new to you, it doesn't seem old and stale.
Most of the people who voted seemed to think that the first MMORPG they played was at minimum good for its era, and likely great on an absolute scale. I suspect that the same question about a randomly chosen MMORPG that you've played would get less positive responses. But I don't know that, and it's hard to word a question to ask that without confusing people.
My first MMO was CoH. I played it, went to other MMO's, went back, then played other MMO's. It was the only MMO I always went back to. Loved it. Would still be playing it today if I could.
FFXI nothing can even come close to how good it was. I also believe it was THE ONLY mmorpg as it was forced group 90% of the time other than the first 10 levels and crafting you had to party up always. It offered unique experience and a lot of fun in a very deep game world which no other game does even 10% of what FFXI did. All other "mmorpg" are mostly solo so they are not mmorpg they are FAKE IMAGES made to look like mmorpg. Many will not like my replay to this thread simply cause they never played a real mmorpg.
My first MMO experience was very traumatic. It was Everquest 2. I played for 10 minutes or so trying to figure out what to do. I eventually fell into water, drowned to death, got really freaked out and never played it again. The en.
My first semi-MMO was 10six and when I really think it about it, it was a pretty boring experience. Most of the time I just chilled in my little piece of land waiting for my crystals or whatever to build up. Talk about a time gate. Towards the end of my time with it I remember doing some PvP, and I think I ended up losing everything since I didn't know a lot of people to help defend my base.
My first was Imperial Conflict. Basically one of those old web empire building games. A video game you aren't supposed to just win with the right combination of time+input was a new concept to me. Also has implicit role forcing mechanics to maximize team play, also new to me at the time. All of this stuff is kind of the default in games I play now.
Since a lot of people won't count that, next up is Runescape. Still jealous of the real quest system, though could never come back to it now.

EQ1 was my first, and it's still the best MMO ever made. So good, that I cannot allow myself to play it anymore because I get addicted every time I go back for one of their progression servers.
anarchy online, was fun building robots and hats. but lousy graphics. had a fun but really laidback guild. ran around in town naked with pillows for buffs.
