Yes, You could still play and enjoy it as much as everyone else . And possibly even more since you wont be bothered by mess-ups in the story line and such
Absolutely! SWG actually has very little to do with Star Wars, IMO. Played it for a little over a year, myself. Think Everquest (in this case, the EQ2 graphics engine) with Star Wars juice lightly sprinkled on it. You get all the look of Star Wars, but none of the feel or in-depth content.
Granted, this is all a bit personal for me. SWG was gonna be "THE GAME" for me, or so I thought...I'm a HUUUUUUUGE Star Wars fan, and so was seriously looking forward to it when it came out. While the Space Combat expansion is simply awesome (and entirely way overdue, again IMO), the Jedi are simply fubar'ed and have done much the same to the game at large. For the job they've done to what could have been the single most awesome MMO EVAR...SOE has earned my undying loathing.
Getting back to the original question...can you still play & enjoy SWG without knowing a great deal about Star Wars? Yes. If you enjoy PvP, twinked toons, sh***y customer service, unresponsive devs and an obscenely borked economy, then yes, you'll love SWG. (Damnit--sorry, just can't keep the bitterness away.)
I've played both, and its a hard choice, but i wouldn't worry about knowing a lot about starwars. I think you should decide on play style.
if you have played a lot of games or play games a lot (more time in the day) then go for starwars. if you are very casual when you play i'de say world of warcraft. wow is more user friendly then SWG but SWG lasts longer.
it also comes down to weather you want to spend your time in a fantasy setting or a futureistic setting.
they both have strangths and weaknesses, it really depends on play style. I currently play SWG because wow ends up being boring after a wile.
Boring doesn't even begin to describe WoW at the upper levels.
More like "I'd rather stick a fork in my eye than log in" once you hit about level 55 in WoW. There is just nothing to do that's new anymore at that point. I've been playing SWG for over a year now and STILL haven't been every place in the game.
Currently Playing: Dungeons and Dragons Online. Sig image Pending Still in: A couple Betas
You could definately continue playing SWG for over a year if you want a jedi knight but personally the grinding was awful before and i can only imagine to get a jedi now, is even tougher and you won't enjoy it as much.
What do you want from your game? Do you want to mainly do combat and probably a small amount of crafting on the side? Then i suggest WoW because leveling is a hell of a lot more fun in that but if you want to do more than just combat then swg is your best friend.
The open endedness of SWG is amazing, you could probably spend a month or so just crafting without having to kill one beast.
maybe even more than a hardcore fan as you are not bothered by 3 Terabyte of background knowledge about the SW universe and the timeline and where SWG deviates from SW canon because its a game that has to be balanced (Empire/Rebel) and with something to aim for high end side (Jedi).
The community is certainly one of the best in the games I know.
