At this point it's just shameless trolling for traffic.
You know what I don't get: A few years ago they said they'll be expanding coverage to include games other than MMOs. Something I'm fine with because I do enjoy other types of games as well.
So why this incessant need to label anything with more people than co-op or squad a MMO? They've already provided themselves an 'out'.
Meh, I already talked about this months ago... whatever.
Are you guys serious? Is MMORPG.com so determined to become relevant that it must call every new game that comes out an MMO, despite the announced feature set? What exactly is "Massive" about 32 players on a server who may never run into each other?
FO76 looks to be interesting as a time passer until Ashes of Creation emerges, but let's not kid ourselves by calling it an MMO, FFS.
Any by the way, "Usher in" is a thing, and "Herald" is a thing. "Herald In" is not a thing.

There is nothing new about FO 76. It is just another survival/basebuild/PVP game a la Conan Exiles, ARK etc. It is not a MMO. Unless you want to call Minecraft, Conan Exiles, Ark, Rust etc also MMO's.
I don't see Fallout 76 ushering in a "new era" of MMO's, but I certainly can imagine it cementing a new form of online game play... if it succeeds !
Proper MMO's now occupy the small niche that they always should have, they were temporarily "huge" because they were literally "the only game in town" during the early years of online gaming. That "Golden Age" is forever gone...
Fallout 76 does nothing revolutionary - I am puzzled why the author would even begin to think this as a game to herald a new era of MMOs - other than yet another article about Fallout 76.
Weird.
When a game comes out to herald in a new era of MMOs - it will be something different than what's on the market in terms of gameplay.
Fallout 76 is a multiplayer Fallout 4 mod with best parts of Fallout 4 removed out of the game. F76 has a questionable future already.
Also ESO was not s massive success on PC initially - it actually had a lackluster launch - what saved the game was the console launch.
I agree that FO76 is basically a multiplayer storyline with the FO4 engine. If you like the gameplay of one, you will probably like the gameplay of the other. It is also clear from the way that they are launching that console is the primary target, with PC as the secondary market.
This game is not really an MMO, it is just a MO, or small group based game. It may indicate where the market is going (I actually think it is more of a reflection of where the market has already gone), but it is not bringing in any new era of gaming.
P.S. I predict that the first nuke launch will be within a month of the launch (or less). I also expect that there will be a big CCU drop off in the first 30 days, and that most people will move on after 3 months or less.
I'm struggling to be interested in Fallout 76. I really enjoyed Fallout 4, I don't think it was nearly as bad as many fans of the series liked to complain it was. I did get it a little late, so many there were major bugs that limited enjoyment when it first came out. Not sure.
My other issue with interest in Fallout 76 is just that it happens to be releasing so close to RDR2, which excites me FAR more. That isn't really Fallout 76's fault though.
If I just consider Fallout 76, my primary issue is the lack of NPC's. Fallout for me is always about world building and story. Fallout games always have some of the best quests in my opinion, and many of the most interesting characters. Fallout 4 was no exception.
I don't get their decision to make every human character you encounter another player. That sounds like a great "buzz generating" thing to say at a press conference, but when you really think about it I don't see how that will improve the game. First off, most of the information i've seen has been alluding to a fairly small number of players per instance (a couple dozen?). The map is "four times" the size of Fallout 4. So even if it was 4 dozen players, that would be 12 players in a map the size of Fallout 4. That is pretty darn empty, in exchange for zero human NPC's.
I've seen the previews/videos from the play session and I realize they have quests...but honestly the idea of getting all my quests for either a computer, piece of paper, or robot just doesn't excite me. The world definitely looks interesting (and more varied in environment compared to prior Fallouts...I'm excited for the greenery) but for me Fallout needs to combine an interesting world WITH interesting characters. Other human players are NOT going to fill that void of interesting characters.
I could be wrong so I'll wait and see what people think after it comes out.
I still am not 100% sure what they're really doing, tbh. At this point, it looks like the game is gonna be online and open without a huge amount of content, but hopefully there's actually quite a lot to do, or I'm not sure how long it'll last. Feels like it's gonna launch, they'll make their money, then it's gonna die off somewhat quickly, leaving behind the diehards. Gonna wait until it's out and see what people think before buying it, but I hope it surprises me and is fun.
I always wanted to play a triple A survival game and I can't think of a better setting than Fallout.
I don't think it's going to be revolutionary or anything like that. But I believe I'm gonna have fun, a fair deal of it.

One MP Modded Fallout 4 under a new title does not become any sort of revolutionary game to mark a new era.
This article is just because the game has "Fallout" on its name, nothing else, what the new offers already exists in multiple titles that released on the MP survival genre. This article is mind-bobbling to me, this is no future, this is more of the same.
You could be asking yourself that about New World, Amazon's MMO, because that one at least is one MMO and is pushing on a type of gameplay that hasn't been properly done on the genre yet.

This is pretty much me as well. I have a ton of criticism and questionsregarding this by I think at the end of the day I'll enjoy this and unlike most other AAA titles these days i can justify spending 60 bucks on this. Bethesda has yet to disappoint me.

I miss the good old days when MMO actually meant MMO. If I can't play with 50+ people in a PvE/PvP zone, it's not an MMO.
