Currently playing FFXI and loving the various stories found in the game (whole Chains of Promathia expansion is huge on story) however, the problem comes with actually DOING the quest/missions to experience the story. Finding people (now that the initial rush from release is over) takes hours/days if you don't meet up/keep up with some familiar faces.
So, here I am, while I still currently plan to play FFXI, I'm looking for another story active MMO. I've exhausted my single player/offline titles for various systems.
I'm not talking about back story, I'm more interested in "experiening" the (grand) story. I've played through GuildWars but, that lasted for a couple weeks. I played WoW during the Open Betas and could not find much of a grand story(excellent back story though).
I've heard a little about EQ2 but, I'm still trying to find more solid info before I lay down my cash.
So.. any suggestions?

GW...if anyone flames me thier a commie...
yeah guildwars..but mainly coz it plays like a single player game
ya know, that's a real tough one. MMO's really lack being driven by a story. In its prime, Anarchy Online was pretty cool, having all sorts of events of different scales, but to go out and kill leets still wasn't engaging play. Stories really play in the background of MMO's these days. Rational story lines that make sense, like in Eve Online, really depend on you to make the story, which is way too open ended for my tastes. Roma Victor, the proclaimed savior of the genre to come, is set in a historical story line. But no matter what, it always ends up with you in the middle of a field with a sword, with nothing but a whim.

MMOs Retired From: Earth and Beyond, Project Entropia, There, A Tale in the Desert, Star Wars Galaxies, World of Warcraft, Eve Online, City of Heroes/Villains.
MMOs Currently (worth) Playing: None.
MMO hopefuls: Age of Conan.
GW had great cut scenes...but not much more actual PLOT than Diablo 2. Sadly, it has more story than MOST MMORPGs at the moment. I honestly can't think of one that has a real plot. Hero's Journey is going to have a Journey System that tracks what quests you've done and that will be worked into what quests become available to you in the future, making what is supposed to become a cohesive narrative.
Final Fantasy 11 has a pretty good storyline, and the missions are really the best part of the game. Unfortunately, you have to nearly reach the level cap in order to complete the story line. You can do the beginning missions during the early levels, but for 90% of the game, you'll need to be level 65+.
Waiting for something fresh to arrive on the MMO scene...
