Red Dead Redemption 2, Game changer or Hype ?

Can't say the game is either Hype or a Game Changer, although in my view it does reinforce the need for single player games over multiplayer ones, i know that they say that there is going to be multiplayer added to it later, hopefully it won't be as bad as the multiplayer in GTA V which is without doubt one of the most toxic, pay to win experiences out there.
I'd still like the game to come to PC, but thats because of the single player aspects of the game. Just keeping my fingers crossed it won't also be limited to 30fps like the console versions. :/

The problem is that players (some players) are never satisfied.

You could literally "fix" every complaint in this game and double the map and quests and they would still complain.

Think of the work put into this game. Think of those "100 hour" work weeks the employees had to put in toward the end and ALL of that created this. It's like there wasn't any room for anything else. So to accommodate "room to grow" what type of work/time/money is needed? More I can tell you.

And I imagine doors open away from the player because it's easier to accommodate. If doors opened toward the player the animation would either have to accommodate the slight move away or it would push against he player.

In my own modding of skyrim I've noticed that if a door opens toward my avatar it starts to get annoying as it hits me. Test that area 20 times, constantly getting out of the way and it will drive you nuts.

Now play a game where a good many doors will always open toward you (eventually they all will depending on what side you are on) and it will wear thin pretty quickly.

Jim Sterling just did a video on having too much detail that doesn't make the game fun. While I don't agree with everything he says on the subject, I can see certain details just not being great. Come to think of it, I think doors open away from the player in Witcher 3 as well.

To get a horse to do "teabagging" moves in RL would probably require high levels of dressage training. Or should that be "un-dressage" in this particular case ?

After watching some RDR2 streams for several hours I can't see anything "game changing". Looks like a solid open world game. This thread also gave no hint to me about anything game changing. It looks like other open world games like witcher 3, The Assassins Creed Os etc. .
Not saying it is a bad game, but game changing ? For which reason ? Maybe I missed it. Can't be the horse balls...

Probably a better tack for the discussion is “why didn’t you have fun?” That would be helpful to those on the fence about buying the game.

I heard comment about this the other day and they basically said players are setting themselves for huge disappointments with this game. I find myself agreeing. The hype train on RDR 2 is running off of the tracks, out of control.

It may be a great game, even a game changer. But what many players are saying it will be is highly improbable. I see a lot of RDR 2 backlash in the near future....
I heard a comment the other day where some people just like to talk out their ass for no other reason than to be negative.

Hey can you point me to this backlash you were referring to because I cant seem to find it anywhere.
It's generally being hailed as a Game of the Year. There are others who complain: It's too slow. There's not enough action.

I'm NOT trying on poop on anyone's parade. I was repeating what a few Twitch streamers have said.

And the pre-game hype was off of the rails. This is not "the second coming" or anywhere near. But enjoy it, or don't. Don't give me any power over your enjoyment of a single player video game. I don't want it ;)

Personally the only modern MMORPG trend that annoys me is the idea that MMOs need to be designed in a way to attract people who don't actually like MMOs. Which to me makes about as much sense as someone trying to figure out a way to get vegetarians to eat at their steakhouse.

You are correct, of course. There has to be some "meeting point" between "real life" and "gameplay fun." That's why I added the comment about getting hit by doors in Skyrim.

As I watch more of it, the story leaves me feeling, blehhh. The choices are not always what I would like to see.

On a positive note, a few of the "witness chains" I've seen can be quite funny. Commit a crime, someone sees. Chase that witness and someone else sees you. Chase that witness and more see you. It can go on for quite awhile, especially if the crime was in a town.

My points were NOT about dissing the game. It was more of a counterpoint to the massive hype this game has been given. But like that other huge Rockstar game success story, I have zero desire to play a street thug or an old wet outlaw.

Yes, I know, you can make "good" choices and help people out, but you're supposed to be a hardened criminal that has run with Duke's gang for 20 years. Why the change your character now? It's hard for me to wrap my head around the concept. It's also why I find it difficult to play the Witcher series. Geralt is not my character. He is the developer's with the developer's backstory. I'm crazy, I know ;)

One thing that probably factored into the hype is how long it took for this sequel to release.  And in many eyes, it vastly improved on the original.

It may not be a groundbreaking game for the open world genre, however it is a huge improvement for the IP and publisher.

Open World Games that pushed the genre forward

    2011 - Skyrim
    2013- Grand Theft Auto 5
    2015- The Witcher 3
    2018- Red Dead Redemption 2

All these games were hyped yes, but the hype was worth it in the case of these games.

Not all games that are hyped are overrated. Sometimes things are just good and everyone agrees.

Don't be so cynical. RDR2 is really good.. the hype measures up to the product. I'm about 20 hrs in and I can say that yes every bit of hype is deserved. Kudos to the dev team over at Rockstar, you can tell they put a lot of care into this game.

    I cannot wait for RDO.

Also to the people saying it's not a "game changer", I would suggest playing it first then come to your own conclusion.  Its most definitely pushing the open world genre forward. There are so many little different game mechanics that make the whole thing. You cant judge it off somebody else's game-play. You have to experience it yourself. Seriously.

Kinda weird how some people just hate to see other people enjoying things they don't enjoy or understand.

    From your article linked:

"Sure, I can antagonize someone until they want to fight me, but I can’t greet them until they want to join me. At least I can’t through the first 20 hours. I can rob them, but I can’t bribe them, fool them into doing tasks for me, or get them to cause a distraction by lying to them."

Some people just cannot be satisfied.. there will always be "its not enough" Rockstar sold you a game that lets you rob people, antagonize them into a fight, rob trains, live off the land, rob banks, gain weight, lose weight, get dirty and have people react to the dirt, groom and feed yourself, groom and feed your horse..walk in a store and actually pick up items from the shelf.. etc and its still not enough.

Very well done, beautiful game. Earthshattering? Not that I've seen yet but its a solid experience, still have A LOT left to do so ill leave a defining answer for when its finished and also see multiplayer.

I guess the easiest way to put it, is it meets my expectations, granted I did play the previous to know what I was in for.

That actually is a very good article and matches what I have seen: RDR2 is possibly the very best of the same type of open world game we have been getting for 2 decades and that is definitely something to cheer and be proud of. They have GOTY in the bag, IMO.

Revolutionary or genre changing it is not though.

Its just the latest game to add on to what others did in the past. Skyrim (modded) is still as good if not better looking than what I have seen from this game. Interactions have obviously been advanced a bit the past 7 years but how much further beyond their own game GTA V? Witcher 3 is still right there. Shrinking horse balls notwithstanding. Fallout 4 modded is pretty impressive as well. But NPC interactions are still nothing close to what GTA Vm RDR2 and Witcher have. That is one thing Rockstar is good at and thats making the world seem 'live'.

There are still a finite number of possibilities to the story line. I am not sure if anyone knows how many yet or not, I dont think its that many. I think Witcher 3 had something like 36 possible outcomes. Some variations on others but still a lot of consequences to what you did along the way.

When Cyber Punk comes out in a couple years people, will be asking the same question about it. These games come along every two years like clockwork. But it generally seems to be the same companies 'improving' on existing stuff. Although Bethesada has gotten out of the lop since Skyrim due to their focus on MMO and multiplayer the past few years. First with ESO and now with FAllout 76.

If you want to watch a guy try and make the 'hero' be a 'good' guy and sort of 'break' the story line watch Cohh Carnage. He also goes out of the way to do every quest and to the best of his ability he tries to 100%$ every game he plays. At least to whatever end his choices come to. His streams/vods will give you a decent idea of the generic gameplay and doing side quests and how even though a PLAYER might want ot make a 'moral' decision the game still forces the CHARACTER to do something a player might not want to. That is the biggest limitations I have seen with the game so far. Whcih is actually pretty huge IMO.

A 'gamechanger' would be having character progression like this game has open up the ability to outweigh the goal of the story with what the player of the character would do. But even that wouldnt be a real game changer since other games have it, but having completely different endings with unique content not just cut scenes or dialogue that give hours or more would be semi gamechanging. Because games that have different endings still eventually steer you back to one of them if you get side tracked slightly.

After watching a few streamers play (not buying, myself), it shows it is a video game.

Doors always open away from the player. I don't know if this a problem with interaction distance, but go into a house, the door opens inward. Go back outside and the door open outward. I've gotten stuck between doors and walls enough in Skyrim to know this can cause problems.

Here is a clip of Strippin, aka Sam, getting mauled by a bear. He lives, but never goes to a doctor. This is the Wild West, not some fantastical magical healing world.

I've seen every streamer I've tuned into smash their horse into rocks and/or trees, fall off of cliffs, and generally abuse the hell out of them. The horse always returns when whistled for. I don't think I've seen a horse die yet. Dan, of DansGaming was asked, "What's your favorite part of the game?" He answers as he's riding hard and fast, "This!" and runs his horse into a rock.

RDR 2 has made great and awesome strides in getting little details into the experience, but there is still a lot of room to go :)

The "drunken bar" scene in Valentine with you and Lenny is awesome and I've laughed hard every time I watched it. Other scenes (not quite cut scenes, though heavily scripted) are cinematically gorgeous as you "ride with the gang" and conversation is taking place while the camera pans to different views, highlighting the artists hard work.

I'm just saying that the game has made many, many strides forward, but there is still a lot of room to grow :)
If you look at any game you can find something that defies the laws of physics or whatever.  It just depends on what your motivations are.

I think this is going to go down as one of the most immersive sp games to date.  It's almost too immersive for todays gamer.  Things take time to do and when it's repetitive, it will get old pretty fast if you don't have any patients and that isn't something that the current generation is known for.

I'm loving it so far.  A bit slow to start, but it's moving along for me nicely now.
