Over the past several years, I have found I don't get as excited about new games. Have been disappointed too many times. I would be willing to bet the multiplayer game will be a survival game.....because that is what sells now. Not my cup of tea, but hopefully, they can pull it off. MMORPG's are dead now and will be for awhile.

It seems to me if you're a fan of source material, Funcom is a best case scenario. One of the few companies who atleast attempt to match the tone of a setting and keep things semi-canon.

To all the people commenting negatively against Funcom, who would be your better choice?
Not doing it at all... that way there's always the chance or dream of a better equipped studio nailing it across the board.

Now that they have the IP , if they ruin it, that's it. It's over. For a LONG time.

Three games? Well, one of them sure is a survival game. You destroy enemy harvesters, craft new stuff out of gathered spare parts, and gang up on sand worms while beating the crap out of the enemy faction. Ugly and clunky animations along with tons of bugs will be the most memorable parts of this masterpiece.

Second one is a story driven single player game that uses the same engine and graphics than the survival game. Lots of dialogue and scripted encounters that gives you an illusion like your choices really mattered, while in reality it will be even more linear than Bioware games on this millennium.

The third game should be obvious to everyone since we all do have phones, don't we? A mobile game that could be pretty much any genre. Beeping sounds and blurry 2d graphics on a 6" display either makes you blind or drives you crazy. Did i mention the cash shop is open already?

We're living exciting times. Can't wait for more news from Funcom. ;) ;) ;)

As I sit here with a cup of coffee, I ponder what would a "good MMORPG" set in the Dune universe actually look like?

I can see a 'Grand Strategy'/Dynasty game rather like Paradox's "Crusader Kings". I can sort of see an RPG, maybe several. But the concept of an actual MMORPG in this Universe defeats me.

Where is the scope for scores of individual players to trek different paths through the Universe?

Well the good news is Arrakis is a desert planet, and the still suit makes the tree chopping simulator + water + food loop not really viable

1 of the 3 titles will definitely be a mobile play.

Damnit, now i need to finish Dune. I have the book but stopped after first 60 pages or so. Probably got into POE again.

But if they're making 3 games, they are spreading themselves too thin. I am assuming whatever mobile thing they put out there will be bullshit and shallow.

Then it leaves a survival game and an MMO like game. Conan exiles is good, so good thoughts there.

    • Multiple starter Planets/Houses offering different story perspectives, mystery and lore
    • An individual rising through the ranks of their respective factions rogue or with other players
    • A mysterious central location that all houses and mercenaries want to explore for resources and data
    • Arrakis has it's own unique history + faction and lore for all players to experience.
    • Mining, crafting, economy

I'd rather have Funcom on this than many other AAA studio's the way things have been doing lately.

I remember the Dune books as being great, but if it's a 6 year partnership, that doesn't seem much time to make an MMO and live out it's life.

Unless it's just they're making them over 6 years then can continue to support them or something after that period.  Either way it's something I hope will make it to release as I'd be quite interested to see what they do.

For a company that has been left for dead about a dozen times, they still keep plugging away. Oh and where is our Anarchy Online 2?

OK, some of that is straight "Crusader Kings", 'rising through the ranks' runs counter to the lore of Dune which is a straight feudal culture. The 'central location mercenary thingy' fits with the latter books written by others but not Dune. The mining, crafting, economy thingy is just straight multi player gaming with no Dune flavour at all.

In short, there is no Dune MMORPG in your post at all.

*headscratch* Dune is so old now though...  Does their audience remember the IP?
I want to help design and develop a PvE-focused, solo-friendly, sandpark MMO which combines crafting, monster hunting, and story.  So PM me if you are starting one.
